I love the idea of the Raspberry Pi, but there are some cheaper alternative single board computers that offer a similar experience for a fraction of the cost. While the community support isn't quite what it is for the Pi, there are a ton of projects you can accomplish on the cheap with these little hidden gems. Keep an eye on AliExpress and Amazon and you can find SBC's sporting quad core ARM process with 2-4 GB of RAM for under $30, including a power supply and IR remote control.
The box used in this video is a Tanix TX6 I picked up on Amazon for $22.71 shipped. It sports a quad Core Allwinner H6 @ 1.5GHz and 4 GB of DDR3 RAM.

You probably need to use the build linked in the description, it's built specifically for TV boxes
@@i12bretro yup, i downloaded Armbian_20.10_Arm-64_focal_current_5.9.0_desktop.img.xz but for some reason it doesnt have the files mentioned in the guide. Should i try to reimage the sd card?
edit: it worked, just burn the image then comment out the ones needed in one of the folders containing the envi.
Maybe try a different image? It's been a few years, I can't remember if they were all the same or not
Your video got me trying to boot Armbian since I got a TX6 lying around.
I noticed different versions listed and opted for the eoan desktop. The u-boot section did not have any 'aw' entries, so I assumed the boot.cmd etc are the 'aw' ones. Also, the uEnv.txt file did not have any rk339 entries, so I just uncommented the aw h6 line.
Tied to boot first time no response; then I keep reset button pressed, repower and release the button after 2-3 seconds. The box stays on with nothing displayed on the hdmi monitor. Any thoughts?
I'd say to first try the exact files I downloaded in the video because when I was testing things out writing the steps I found I had different results with different images. It will also guarantee you get an image with the .aw files which I think are required to get it to boot correctly. Also make sure you download and flash the uboot 16 MB after flashing the main Linux img to the SD card.

few more questions, will this os get support for onboard wifi and Bluetooth in future? I got wifi working using external dongle.
External dongle is probably your best bet, however, I flashed the latest Armbian Ubuntu this morning to see if RUclips playback was any better (it wasn't) and noticed it had working on board wifi. I did a speed test with it and it wasn't great, but it did connect and work which was a step in the right direction.
@@i12bretro the external dongle isn't giving good latency, but it did connect. RUclips playback at 360p was lag free. If only bluetooth had worked, could have used it for zoom or Google meet😁.
Can you share link of that build, if wifi worked, there is a chance for bluetooth I believe
Yes, I had the similar performance from RUclips and using the on board wifi. If you haven't gotten too far into setting it up you may try the focal fossa Armbian build to see if it meets your wifi needs

I can't say for certain, but it's the same chip so I say give it a try. These steps don't touch the internal storage of the device, so if it doesn't work you'll just boot to a black screen. Remove the microSD card from your device and you'll be back to Android. There's not much to lose except for a few minutes of your time to try it and see if it boots

It does not harm the android system files, it boots and runs completely from the microSD card. To my knowledge, you can't run it from a USB flash drive, it has to be microSD. I think you can squeak by with an 8GB microSD card, but I'd recommend at least 16GB to allow you a usable amount of space.

The TX6s is a different SoC and isn't currently supported

Not sure. Are you using the same versions of Armbian I used in the tutorial? If not, things have likely changed with the images

I have a tx6, I'm new to changing the firmware, does it run from the card or does it completely change the box's firmware? my idea was to use the box, to run klipper , use it only with terminal , to serve as a klipper server and if possible then use klipperscreen through hdmi, thanks.
Armbian runs from the SD card
i follwed instruction, it's not trying to boot from sdcard. android shows up.
What TV box do you have?
It booted fine and it works. Unfortunately it's slow as molasses on my identical device Pendoo X6 Pro H6 All Winner. Retroarch is unplayable even at 640x480 resolution. I tried updating it through the terminal and nothing improved. Wish I could find a emulator frontend that could run. Lakka ran great on my lowest end Android box. This is the exact equivalent to the Tanix TX6 and nothing will work on it.
That sucks. Support for the H6 is definitely not as good as the Amlogic chips. I wonder if Retroarch performance isn't good because of GPU driver issues. You could always reflash Android and mess around with the Dig emulation frontend. Dig has been my go to on FireTV stick since they are so locked down, but cheap.

I haven't tried flashing to eMMC in about 6 months. My attempt copied over fine but wouldn't boot without the microSD card. From what I've read on the forums it works on some boxes without issue and others it doesn't. Depending on the version of Armbian you installed, some builds have tools in Armbian Config to copy the installation from SD to eMMC

Yes, you can easily revert back to Android by removing the microSD card. I do this alot with my box. Chromium runs well. I would say similarly to how a Raspberry Pi 4 runs it. RUclips inside of Chromium was not good on the build I am running. I am on an older version, so this definitely could have improved in the last few months, but even at 720p it was dropping frames and stopping to buffer. Again, this has probably improved in later builds of Armbian.

@@rishabhyadavJP I haven't found a way to update the Armbian build in place. I always end up reflashing the SD card and losing all my settings and applications. I do think this is a nice cheap setup and should do as well as a Raspberry Pi for web browsing and office work. Good luck

@@dsmyify Where did you get this versions? The links show different ones. I assume the Uboot image is the problem why its not working. I tried SD card and also an USB Stick, for both the partition is not readable. Btw Windows 11 running.

I believe it's gxl_p212_1g.dtb or gxl_p212_2g.dtb depending on if you have 1 or 2 GB of RAM. I don't have a TV box with the S905w chip, so I'm going off what I found in some forum posts. Good luck

I've never tried it, but I would assume it's possible since Armbian is running off a SD card.
How to run Balena Etcher on Armbian OS focal version? There is no tutorial have been found. Im using allwinner h6 android tv box. I hope you make a video for it.
You'd need to find a version compiled for ARM64. It doesn't look like Balena offers an official ARM build

There are Debian builds of Armbian. I'm not sure if it would work with vanilla Debian

Hi, after many many hours I got my box working exactely as needed. In my case I needed a working buster without desktop, so I deleted many files and made some neded configurations. I believe, I deleted one file to much, because if I call the htop, the CPU Freq1-4 shown 0 MHz. Does any one know, howto repair this?

Where will Ambrian OS be installed? on emmc? Will Ambrian OS boot up only when the SD card is inserted? When the SD card is removed, will the Android boot up?
Armbian is installed and runs from the SD card. Powering off, removing the SD and powering back on will return you to Android

Hi, I notice the Armbian login message of 2992MB ram which is dreadful. Can it yet utilize full 4GB ram? I'm considering switching from a PineH64 if it can.
Not that I have seen. I've always shown ~3GB available instead of the full 4GB. I'll flash the latest Armbian build later today and see if the developers have made any progress on this.

I've never seen that error. Have you tried a different Armbian image to see if you get the same result. For instance, try the Ubuntu flavor if you are trying the Debian or vice/verse

Not sure, I just came across it when I commented. I've never tried it. My guess is you just flash the image and don't need to write the second tx6 image

I've a Tanix TX6 Alice UX inside. I made the SDcard (thanks for your work in the Script !!!!) exactely along the script. I connected the HDMI- and network cable, gave power on the box but in no condition I get any output.Also I tried to press the botton nearly the SD Card, gave Power on the box, waited a few seconds and leave the botton, no differnt. Could it be, that HDMI isn't supported in the scriped config? If YES, what output device is the right one?
A few things: Did you use the Armbian and u-boot versions linked in the video description or newer builds directly from the Armbian forum? Also, did you flash the SD card a second time with the appropriate u-boot .img and did you correctly modify the uenv.txt and rename all the files listed in the description? HDMI has always worked on every build that I've tried.

If I start the TV-Box without Card, than will start Andriod normaly. With Card the Screen stay's dark.

I didn't compile it, but if you follow the link below the instructions in the description the developers have a repository and pre-made u-boot images to be used for different supported devices. The TX6 is one of them
Can I actually install the Linux to the emmc/embedded storage?
I didn't try it on the TX6 because I like being able to use Android from time to time, but here is a tutorial on the process. You'd need to use the AW script in /root

The latest official release from Tanix for the TX6 is Android 9 build 20190228. Is this what you are asking?

what is the main advantages using armbian instead of the native android come with the box?
For me it opens up alot of possibilities to use the box for other things. With Armbian you can install most Linux based software and make the TV box a cheap web server or database server. The best part is you can pull the microSD card out at anytime and power it back on to be back to the stock Android to use it for streaming media or playing RetroArch.
Damn, you can do more than one thing at a time? I might be editing a to-do list, while I download a large file, while watching a movie. All on the same screen.

@@i12bretro ok dude, they did not. See 01:35 - when You choose Your Drive, the second one, MXT-USB, it already consists of F:/, G:/ - and mine is not. And that is before flashing anything on the card. So how's that? Please explain as I struggle :]
That's probably from me flashing the image to test it. The image should be all you need. Try a different SD card

@@hikmatplaystation807 you can issue the sudo shutdown command or select shutdown from the logoff menu. I usually do one of those and unplug power. Then just plug the power back in to power it back up.

No, it won't work. That box uses a completely different processor

I'm not finding much support for the HiSilicon processor that box uses. I'm not sure if that's because it's newer or just not as popular as the Amlogic and Allwinner chips. You could always try following the tutorial. If it doesn't work the only thing that will happen is a black screen trying to boot into Armbian. In that case, remove the microSD card and you'll be back to your Android OS. You'd only be out the time it took to try

I haven't tried installing anything to the internal storage because I like to have the ability to pull the SD card and use Retroarch on Android whenever I like

Does anyone know if this works with the 2022 version T95 (H616 cpu)? I've tried many many .dtb files and can't get it to even TRY to boot from the microsd card. What gives? I had seen something to the effect that the T95 was locked to booting onboard unless you delete the whole bootloader (I think this may have been a different version of this box, tho), but I'm hesitant to do that just yet.
It doesn't work with the H616. I've tested it on that SoC
@@i12bretro Oh man, that sucks. Good to know tho, thanks. That board wasn't even worth what I paid for it, and the android system on it kind of even sucks. Well, maybe at a future date, someone will figure something out.
@@i12bretro The T95 plus (Rockchip RK3566 AIoT processor) which is apparently secure boot enabled so that it only boots from emmc, can be made to boot from sd card by destroying the boot partition and recovery partitions. I'm not sure how this relates to the T95 with the H616 processor, but might a similar procedure allow it to boot this image?
No, the H616 is a different CPU than the H6
@@i12bretro Oh thanks, yes, the H616 is slightly different, but it is the newer version of the H6, so it should be mostly backward compatible. So far, I haven't even been able to recognize my T95 in Phoenix Suite or other tools to restore it if I hose it (although I did at one point get it to list in the "Eject" drop-down menu in the lower right as "Mbox", but I work getting Armbian running on that card is in early stages. I may have to put it on a shelf for a few years and wait that one out.

No, just to a microSD card. It doesn't mess with MMC, so you can just remove the SD card to revert back to Android

Wifi won't work unless you get a USB wifi dongle using a chipset that works with Linux

This thread discusses installing different desktop environments for Armbian. From what I've read trying to get the full Ubuntu experience doesn't run well on these lower powered ARM processors. Let me know if you try it and how it turns out!

when insert sdcard... dont want to boot at all...
You may have to unplug power, use a toothpick and press and hold the reset button inside the AV port and hold while plugging the power in, after a second you two release the reset button to try to force it to boot to the SD card. Once you get it to boot once you shouldn't have to do this method again

@@twfsys3950 I haven't seen that error on mine. What happen if you remove the micro SD card, does it boot to android like normal? And what happens with the micro SD in the device, if you remove power, use a paperclip to hold the reset button inside the AV port and then apply power?
@@i12bretro It boots normally from the sdcard without needing the clips and is also running android after removing the sdcard, but when I boot for the second it reads, but hangs on mmc or brsfs.

I don't have a T95 mini to test on, but if it's running an Allwinner H6 it has a good chance of working.

Yes, just remove the SD card and the box will boot back to Android

I don't think it is supported at this time. It's a different SoC than the TX6.

I had never even noticed that I downloaded the wrong uboot! Interesting that it works. I'll have to flash the non-mini TX6 uboot and see if anything changes

You'd have to do some digging on the Armbian forums, but it looks like there's a working version for the h616. From what I've gathered, the h313 are basically the same chip just clocked lower. It depends on the build of Armbian being used, but my wifi worked with one of the previous Ubuntu builds
