The Making of the Phil X Franken G, Part two

- The shock of EVH passing away October 6, 2020 was devastating to every fan in the Van Halen community. Phil X, lead guitar player for Bon Jovi and his own band The Drills wanted to pay tribute to "The King" in his own way- something more than just walking into any guitar shop and grabbing a Frankenstrat replica off the rack. Phil conceived the idea of combining a Gibson SG (Phil's guitar of choice) with Eddie Van Halen's legendary red, black and white Frankenstein. Since he is endorsed by Gibson, the custom shop supplied the blank SG that would become this one-off monster. Phil, my good friend Scott Bawden (Fugly hot rod guitar shop) and myself put our heads together working out every last detail before any physical work was done. In this video (Part two) the three of us sit back and remember our own unique experiences in creating this beast from its beginning as a plank of wood, the challenging paint job and then ultimately ending up on stage in the talented hands of Phil X.

What a great tribute fellas. As a luthier myself I appreciate all the details in this that no one would ever see. That's how it's done! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
That is one BADASS SG! sounds awesome! Gotta love Phil X🤘
Even to those that may not like this SG they would have to admit it really catches your eye!
Cool to see Phil wearing the Johnny B Guitars t-shirt!
Hey don't let it be so long between parts, I'm loving this 🤣
I have part 3 almost edited, and part four!? That's were I assemble this beast in extreme detail, so much more to come!
It should have been a Floyd rose bridge
@@wolfgangwolfdogplaysguitar701 Please explain in full detail why you think that. But of corse you already know that it would have been impossible to install a Floyd on this guitar, and Phil isn't a Floyd guy so what would the point in that be? This is a hybrid, if we put on a Floyd then we should put on a maple neck with cigaret burns... and so on, that guitar you can buy anywhere, this guitar... only one.
Its kind of funny seeing the people complain "shoulda done that". This was the perfect tribute for the end user. Phil, if you happen to see this, are you running an amp through the Captor X for this video*** EDIT Saw that at the end. Awesome project!
Long live The King❤️🖤🤍
Great video guys!
It would be cool if the cig burns can go on the headstock but since it’s black it wouldn’t fit. My favorite thing about Eddie is when he takes a quick puff then places his burning cig in the strings on the headstock.
I built a Sg out of 1x5/8 cherry wood also Installed a floyd rose on mine it was fine,I was alittle worried about the claw springs but it was fine,Love your SG Phil awsome job they did.
I thought there was a Gibson SG with a floyd on??
The one thing that we didn't talk about was that the neck angle isn't meant for a Floyd either. The Gibson bridge sits much higher than a FR, for proper action the Floyd would have to sit almost an 1/8 inch of the body. Cherry is a great looking wood, stunning with the right stain and finish. It's also much harder and stronger than the usual mahogany SG's are made from, did you get a nice bright tone?
@@spudvader It could have been mine i had it posted on face book. year ago.
@@JOHNNYBGUITARS Very nice tone the neck i used was from a Hohner St Vickory added 1/8 of maple to the heal on the neck floyd rose was flush mount to the body great action.
If you want i can post my Sg again on face book and some of my other guitars i did.Back yard jobs i did for my self.
I have to agree with Phil about the wolfgang not looking right with the frank paint job.
I did not like it on the PV or the later EVH one.
When you see a gorgeous quilt or flame top WG next to one that is striped or even just a solid color there is no comparison!
The WG looks so much better with the quilt or flame maple top! of course that is just my opinion.
It is possible to put a Floyd Rose on a SG. Gibson made at least two for Tony Iommi. That said, it probably requires a custom made, very tiny tone block.
The problem is in the angle of the neck. The bridge on an SG is higher than a Floyd so yes the guitar would have to be custom made with the angle of the neck set for a Floyd.
Dude! Phil's the best. He's what we have thank God, now that King Edward is rocking Valhalla, he's gonna carry the torch proudly and loudly for us lowly VanHalen minions. The SG Frankie is basically Phil's artist model tribute and could fit him none better, so congrats to you guys for a magnificent build. Now, I have 1 question, what in the hell kind of bridge is on that Wolfgang Frankie that Edward's holding on the guitar mags cover? Looks like some kinda prototype with a 2inch bigsby.or something. Never noticed it before, but we all know if it wasn't right, EVH would fuck rig it til it worked. Right?
Thanks so much Robin, Phil is the best!! And he's Canadian!!! All I know about that bridge is that yes, it's some kind of prototype, Eddie was always fuckin around with something.
that thing is an A Tuna, if you will but a whole bridge. i think he actually used it when he was on 2 1/2 Men
@@philx1111 Thanks Phil, I saw that episode! He was on the shitter, where he said he done his best work.. LolL been a huge fan since the F.A. vids, also, glad you blew up with Bonjovi, I'm also a fan of theirs, but The Drills are nearest and dearest to my heart man, yall should be selling out arenas for sure, and come play Atlanta sometime, I'm pretty sure the mandates are over. PEACE,!
@@JOHNNYBGUITARS Thanks man, congrats on the build. Your Ocd has paid off for you for sure. I've watched and really enjoyed your builds over the last several years and really enjoyed the EVH ones. Especially the progression from the stock strat to the Frankie, and I really dig The Shark replica you did. It looked great in the live stream!
Thanks Phil... Drop a sic EVH sounding pedal, then pull out the rug of disappointment and land in the pit of nevergonnagetit! "Blows huge fart in your direction."
Shame you couldnt put a Schaller 456 or 458 bridge like Tony Iommi used on a SG Frankenstein, the look and tone for Phil would have been even better, but I think they ceased production of those almost 10 years ago and prices for them are stupid, glad I still have a Gold 458 hoarded away
No shame at all, I think Phil is pretty happy with the wraparound, and he gets to keep the trapeze to complete the look. I've got an old chrome Schaller, there great!
@@JOHNNYBGUITARS I agree as Long as Phil is Happy that is what is most important, like you I just love the tone and Look of those classic Old parts like the 456 and 458. Amazing work
