  • In this tip, I'm talking about the simplicity of the golf swing. It's just mass swinging around an axis. If you understand it you will be able to learn a simple golf swing that will hit amazing shots.
    Too many people are making the golf swing way to complicated. Simple is the key. I remember years ago I used to diagnose every position of the swing. This got me nowhere. Once I understood the simplicity of the golf swing it all changed. I was like a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders.
    I still think of a simple golf swing to this day. In no way do I want to make it complicated. This is why I say things the way I do. I know others teach it differently but once you see the simplicity of the golf swing you really will take you game to a level you never thought possible.

    All I can say about Paul's tips and lessons is that I'm always collecting $$$ at the end of every round. No longer do I have a weak 150 yard slice that killed my round. I have confidence in my swing and hit each club longer and straighter than ever before. Thank you Paul💯🏌️‍♂️😊

    Folks, I've got to let you all know something. I visited with Paul and went to Bears Best in May
    I learned the principles, worked my tail off (not hitting balls) and Saturday the 12th of August won my club championship in my flight. Before these principles were taught to me my scores were around 91 to 95. I'm 62 years old. 36 holes in the club championship.......76, 78, from a course that played 7318 yards. Wanna cut down on your headache medication......learn this technique.

      Thanks so much. Simple is the key. I do not deviate because I get unreal results super-fast. My students some from all over the world.
      They are only in town for a few hours. In this time I need them hitting it better than they ever have in their lives. This is why I do and say things differently than someone teaching locals knowing they will be back time and time again. Everything I do is tested hundreds if not thousands of times with my students over the years so I know what works and what they can handle. If it doesn't work 1 way I say it I have 10 others. I keep saying it different ways and analyzing the student to see what they are latching on to. Then we get it fast. I am putting it out there for everyone. They just need to hear what I am saying.

    I was watching LIV and they showed Mito Pereira and David Puig driving off the tee in slow motion from a facing view. Since I follow Paul, what I noticed immediately was even though both generate tons of club head speed, their wrists were nothing more than oily hinges. The youthful power they generated with their hips and legs was all focused on the pivot point of their wrists, which remained loose. It was an incredible display of power and pliancy in the same motion.

      I need to do a tip on this asap. I had a student send me a video of this a while back. Not sure I can use his. If you want to shoot and send it to me that would be great. He had the camera on the tee. Would have been off his left side on about a 45 degree angle shooting back at him. He did 3 practice swings and you could clearly see his hips firing then he stepped up and hit it. Not a problem if you don't want to shoot it. People are shy on camera. I will find someone cause I need to shoot this for sure.

    I’ve been doing this for 5 range sessions straight. I’ve never hit the ball more consistently and flush in 30 years. It’s so easy on my body. I can hit balls all day.

    100% spot on. If you don't move your body fast enough in the change of direction, the club will likely bottom out too soon and hit the ground behind the ball OR you'll stand up and flick at the ball. The club must be traveling in the upswing while the hips fire the downswing. This will set the wrist cock even deeper and the ball should come off the club head smokin' hot. BUT, regardless, you must be video-ing the swing to truly know what you are doing right and wrong. I see way too many people on the range pounding balls day after day but never video themselves. They never improve, and I believe they don't want to see how bad their swing is, so they keep on trying quick fixes instead of facing the music and putting in the work. A golfer should always want evidence based changes.

      You got that. No one videos their swings. I can literally think of one guy I have seen at our range who had his phone out. Everyone else is just whacking away. I video every time I am at the range and even when I play.

      @@paulwilsongolf- That's it exactly. I had to spend several years becoming good at analyzing the best swings in history and compare to my swing on video. It takes time to learn how to recognize what's bad and then how to fix it. That doesn't happen overnight for most people.

    Hey Paul, love your simple approach and have been trying to find that loose swing, (watching and applying your vids for over a year). Not sure if this is a common issue but i can turn my arms off at the range and even when doing preshot routine however when i step up to the ball its like my muscle memory takes over and i end up pulling with my arms. Any suggestions in terms of swing thought that have helped students with this when on the course?

      Thanks so much. Simple is the key for sure.
      Taking it from the range to the course: you need to go out by yourself with 3 extra golf balls in your pocket. Don't keep score. Swing no more than 50%. Drop balls and hit extra shots. It is about actually trying something new when you play. If you keep doing your old swing when do you ever change? With driver, you pick a close target a few yards away or way way way in the distance that you cannot possibly reach. You cannot pick a fairway bunker at 250. This is a distance thought. So with new targets, your thought is to hit the fairway not hit it 250 down the fairway. Irons, I would be taking one more club and trying to hit the center of the green not the pin. Swing smoothly. Throughout the round you could be doing practice swings holding the club in the air hinging and rehinging to keep the wrists loose and other times you can be holding it in the air firing your legs and hips so you get used to the feeling of using them as the power source not the arms. Do this for a few rounds by yourself until you get used to a new way of swinging. Right now, if you play with others you will think distance and you will revert back to your old swing. It is all about doing something new. It takes a little time to get used to it. Also, don't forget to do daily practice swings at home.

      I get people to stop coming over the top in minutes. Turn the arms off at the top so you are not pulling it down. Turn the hips first. If they move first you get simple physics shallowing it. Then you hit it dead straight. Watch me do it:

    Hi Paul. I am new to your channel (I just subscribed) and am loving your content. Your videos are so easy to follow and your explanations are clear and precise. I am starting to become really happy with my swing and am on the verge of starting to play some really good golf.     You've really helped me out ive unknowingly hitting with my arms all my life focusing on my takeaway to impact not really caring about follow through. Now i get my body involved and cross it over and i can hit it a ways when i do it right need to hit some balls. Thanks. What helps me hit it well is swinging back and forth like a clock real lose then address the ball and repeat that motion.

      Exactly. Truly mind boggling that the whole golf world is not talking about this. Instead they just keep thinking impact. Impact mean nothing. It's not the widest point of the arc. If you are using simple physics you need the mass (club) to swing to it's widest point. Watch these:

      Want to get more speed try spinning a broom handle it gives one better understanding a least for me, I use a 6ft wooden dowel, if anything it help keeps the body and mind on task. Effortless speed don’t take much effort. Doc Wilson has the key to speed and he’s giving out replica’s 😎

    Paul, your vids/advice put all these other RUclips instructors on a lower level. Not that they don't have sound advice, but it's their presentation...too verbal, too technical, too complex. It's not that you dumb things down, it's that you explain it simply and directly so that practicing the drills equates to real time improvements in a very short while. Your grip, hip turn, and 50 % effort vids are essential to the average golfer's quest to improve. You've helped me elevate my game for sure. I've gone from not playing for 7 years and starting back with a 18.2 handicap to someone shooting in the low 80's/ high 70's in just 3 weeks, but that's because I'm out PRACTICING WITH A PURPOSE, not just going through the motions. Every swing my mantra is 50% as my pre shot routine has me swinging 3 to 4 times and doing the hip turn before focusing on the grip and then addressing the ball. Thank you sir.

    Paul, I got sick of slicing it so started rolling the wrists over on purpose like you advised. Now I am drawing the ball and it's about starting it straight or to the right of target. Keeping the head behind the ball at impact seems to be key. Thanks for your tips. The ball has a nice penetrating flight instead of the weak right shots I used to hit with an open face. I am excited to play golf now, not dreading it!

      Nothing. I have taught countless golfers with hip replacements. Never a problem. I remember one lady who came to the school. She just had 2 new hips. She was all of 120lbs flying it 240. She literally hit it longer than any of the guys who were there. If you just got it done get over the psychological part of it and you are good to go.

    Hello Paul, I am sending you this message all the way from South Africa 😊. I purchased your Body Swing and some of the other products about 3 years back and my game has really improved. I am down to a 9 handicap. I recommend you products to just about everyone I play with 😊.
    The only thing I cannot find a fix for is when I fire my lower body and my arms come down the "Y" from the arms get created before I hit the ball and not after as you explained in you other videos. Basically I end up with no or even backwards shaft lean. Its like my upper body stays to far behind my lower when I fire my legs. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    @Paul Wilson. Wow, thanks for this video. The image that gives my mind is perfect for translation to body. I've definitely noticed, that abrupt firing on the down swing is key, that abruptness also helps with the lateral/hip rotation move to the front foot. peace love light

      This is a good one just to simplify the swing. Yes, the hips need to be quick to start. To get this you have to even be thinking of doing it. Most people are just hitting with the arms. Keep the thought of hips clearly in your mind at the top and keep working on it. Do this drill:

      Very good. Glad you found. See it differently. You are not hitting anything. You are hinging and rehinging your wrists. This arm unit is connected to your body which is coiling and uncoiling.

    Have you ever seen how far somebody can hit a golf ball sitting down? Jack Nicklaus is on record saying he never tried to intentionally drive his legs. He was just trying to get the club head moving fast. As long as your weight moves forward (a lot of players fall back) you don’t have to drive your legs to make a very powerful swing, but as Byron Nelson said, hit from the ball on through not from the top. The goal is to have your arms fully extended AFTER you hit the ball.

      Try accelerating the club through impact and you run the risk of twisting the face.

      @@paulwilsongolf This difference we have is probably the most confused aspect of golf instruction and might be instructive for your students that struggle even after they try mightily to do what you advocate. I have been playing golf for 50 years and this is THE problem for most average golfers. Fortunately, I did not have to earn a living through golf. The swing is a mystery wrapped in a riddle and a difficult thing to master for most. Understanding why the golf swing is so hard for most has been a lifelong obsession for me, only matched by the Kennedy Assassination (Oswald did it alone). Not sure who has killed most golf instruction. This video link from Mike Dero is one of the best presentations of the confusion. (ruclips.net/video/UZR7WfiJ1jA/видео.html). Most golfers would be better throwers than pullers, especially older golfers. My point is that your advocating that your hips create the power unwittingly turns these people into pullers. I know this is a another competing youtube instructor, but Shawn Clement talks about "cutting the grass" which is a way to throw the club with the correct feeling of not intentionally using the upper body aggressively. He is throwing but with very little effort. It is a feeling that is hard to get because it is counter to your instincts. As he says, the ball is not the target. I think what you are saying is that you do not create power by actively hitting at the ball with your arms. Agreed. Pullers can to this but not throwers. The problem is that most people are still hitting at the ball even though they don't believe they are. "Cutting the grass" I believe is the best way to feel this for the average golfer. If you tell them to "fire the hips" to get power some will leave the club behind them and that is just as bad as hitting at the ball. It is a timing thing. I would be interested in your comments about what Mr. Dero and Mr. Clement advocate, and perhaps your students would also. Specifically, why is an aggressive move with the lower body necessary to generate clubhead speed? This occurs through the leverage that is created naturally by what Mr. Clement calls the kinetic chain. When I swing I am hanging on to the club as it swings. I am not trying to speed it up. As I mentioned in the original post, the arms are fully extended AFTER the ball. This is best done by just hanging on or "cutting the grass". Lastly, Peter Croker advocates the only other approach. He is the only instructor to have the cover of Golf Digest 2 months in a row back in the 1990's. He is an accomplished player from Australia and has shown that some golfers can be benefited by actually making a very aggressive move from the top by actually throwing the clubhead at the ball while locking their lower body in place. The opposite of what most instructors teach. When you hammer a nail you do not hold your wrist cock, you push the hammerhead at the nail as fast as you can and in the process the cock increases. Try it. As long as your weight goes toward the target you will not "come over the top" This can be applied to the golf swing with interesting results for some people but this is not as easy on the body. Works well for very athletic people. Also, solves the swing timing problem for them. I really believe you are swinging like Dero and Clement and the hard move with the hips adds nothing and can create problems. Not needed to have your upper body work correctly. Let the club swing itself with the assist you get from gravity if your backswing is correct and the lower body is just the support for the swing. Food for thought.

      The golf swing is simple. Stop your thinking. I have done it for you. I have based my teaching on Iron Byron since 1999. A golf shot has 3 parts. The machine has 3 elements. The match up. It is literally that simple. Watch me work this this student then ask yourself if anyone in the world would say they could do that and actually do it:

      I have seen the Dero video. It's fine to know what you are but that is an arms thought. I am not hitting anything neither is the machine. It's arm is powerless.

      Cutting the grass is fine. This is Wild Bill Melhorn stuff. Works great for seniors. I certainly don't like his strong grip. I worked at the course right beside his in Canada. Strong grip = shut face = hooks if you wrists are loose. The Iron Byron has a square face at the top. If it was shut they would have to add a compensation for that to the machine to get the ball on target. I don't like compensations.
      "the arms are fully extended AFTER the ball" this is correct. I call this the release point. This is why that happens:

      "why is an aggressive move with the lower body necessary to generate clubhead speed? " This is the motor of Iron Byron. Motor turns the driveshaft (torso) which moves the arm. If Iron Byron is hitting it 200 how do they get it to hit it 300? They turn up the motor. That is all they do.
      "hammer a nail" - this is hitting and will never. You are moving the mass (club) without the axis (body). As you near impact you end up twisting the face. Isn't everyone already hitting? How is that working out for everyone? You can move your arms without your body but it is impossible to move your body without your arms moving. Turn your body and the arms move (just like the machine).
      Wrist cock - This is loose wrists just like the hinge on the machine.
      You may have been saying about Crocker to release it from the top. If so, this is Mike Austin, Mike Dunaway and Count Yogi. I am okay with this idea but Austin, Mike Dunaway don't do this. The only one that did was Count Yogi who taught this to Austin.
      Flattening or shallowing the plane - this is simple physics of mass swinging around an axis. I explain that here:

      Every pros hips are open at impact. This is a fact. 80-90% of everyone I teach is facing the ball as they hit the ball. This is due to learning as an adult vs. learning as a kid. This is the big difference no one is talking about.

      The ball is the problem. So to get it you need to go against human nature. I could fix you in minutes. Again, I don't guess.

      @@paulwilsongolf thank you for the time you spent with your reply. Hopefully some of your students will investigate some of the information presented and it would be interesting to get their feedback. Again, Byron Nelson said hit “from the ball on through”. I can guarantee you most people do not know what this really feels like and that is the problem. Getting them to do it is what all of this is about….. unless you are young and you are a puller…. It’s not the same for everybody and even with golf there are different ways to skin a cat.
