    I didn't understand in minute 25:20 "But because we can recapture the polionotus like burrow, this suggests there's a handful of genes and not hundreds of genes controlling it".

    Wouldn't an obvious good test be to study common predator type in each area of each sub species to see if it is a strong selection pressure? Hypothesis - The areas where escape hatch genes evolved are the same areas where snake population or any predator that follows mice down their holes are high (opposed to owls/large predators?) Wouldn't it make sense that the "gene/s" for escape hatch building would be rewarded and "gene/s" for no escape hatch would end up in the bellies of snakes?
