About 40 years ago I worked in a Navy R&D facility that started using some of the very earliest prototype lithium batteries which were made by GTE. I don't remember the exact chemistry but it was a double D size that was 3.6V/10Ahr. Massive capacity for the day. Turned out that GTE never tested the proto batteries for what happens if they got shorted. Since we were going to be putting the batteries in things that would be in salt water, we did. They EXPLODED with a force equivalent to 1/3 stick of dynamite. GTE later solved that minor testing oversight. I believe they put a compound into the mix which impedes the rate of discharge so they won't explode. I believe that's true for most (all?) lithium batteries. Now they can just overheat and catch fire.

You cannot charge a lithium battery via a tesla coil because of the floating voltage. The voltage of tesla coil is high but the circuit just isn't complete. There would be no current flow and no overcharge. To actually overcharge a battery charge it fully, then connect it to an unregulated DC power supply. The battery would heat up and swell. That's when you know that you have done it right.
