  • My fascination with Braun continues.
    This time it's the Regie 450S, an iconic tuner / amplifier from the 70's (1976-1978).
    Unfortunately, even before I could switch it on, I heard sound from the interior. Something was definitely rattling in there, so no power for now.
    A closer look revealed a possible attempt at a repair, with some very charred components and a loose board.
    Hmm, probably going to be interesting.
    Stick around, Might be fun.

    Seeing this Braun design again is like a time capsule! Frankly, in the 70's, I was disapproving of the old radio design style, like the Grundigs and the Sabas, for they were old school. And here comes the future: clean, minimalist design. "Form follows function".
    And, by the way, this design was carried on with Sun Microsystem computers, and later with Apple!
    But back to the project: This one is really worth to be resurrected.
    IMHO it is even a part to be shown in the NY MOMA.
    Guys, I am carried away!!!

    1:50 I suspect that Diff Quadro means that it generates quadrophonic sound by using the difference between the two input channels?
    Rauschfilter = noise (hiss) filter
    Ubername = "take-over"
    Band = Tonband = tape recorder
    Monitor = an extra input if you had a 3-head tape recorder.
    2:50 In case you're wondering, BFBS=British Forces Broadcasting Service, a radio station for British military stationed in Germany during the Cold War. WDR=Westdeutsche Rundfunk,
    Hinten="Rear", probably for that "Diff Quadro" function.
    Tape recorders and cassette decks with DIN plugs can't send the monitoring signal back while they record because they use pins 1/4 for microphone recording and 3/5 for line level playback and recording. On old radios (including tube radios dating before DIN plugs), the tape connection is an output while you have the radio on (so you can record) but is an input when you switch the source to Tape. So you can't monitor a recording because if you switch to Tape, your recording stops. But for 3-head tape recorders (and cassette decks), you will want to be able to listen to the tape recorder while it's recording, so tape recorders with 3 heads have 2 DIN sockets: one for playback and recording (for backwards compatibility) and one for monitoring during recording (and that output obviously also works during playback). I think the "Ubername" button may make it possible to record from the Monitor input or something; The German word "Aufnahme" is recording, "Ubername" implies copying from one tape to another.

    • @electronicsoldandnew

      That was incredibly enlightening. Thank you. I'm beginning to see some of the logic of the mods made on this set, as well as understanding the functionality that this was designed for. Thanks again.

    • @JacGoudsmit
      @JacGoudsmit 4 года назад +1

      @@electronicsoldandnew I just noticed someone else commented that "Ubername" is used to store ("copy") the presets. That makes sense, and I was probably wrong about that.

    Hey Manuel,
    I really like your videos a lot :) It's always a great mix of a deep technical knowledge, great diy-ideas and a very sympathic person. Please keep up the good work!
    Personally, I am also a big fan of the old Braun design. I recently got a complete Braun Atelier Hifi system (5 components: amp, cd, cassette tape, tuner and turntable) for free (!!) from a friend - and now it's back to perfect working condition - and I use it every day. I also have a receiver (tuner + amp) of the same line like your Regie 450S in my repair queue - I will fix this one at some point in the near future. Unfortunately, my repair videos on my channel are all in german - I was wondering, if I should go for english or german, but as there is so much good content in english already, and - being german - of course I still feel a bit more comfy talking in german, I decided to go for the second option...
    About the orange / winered ROE-caps: I made exactly the same experience. I just restored some old dynacord tapedelay-units and amps. Some of them had the same kind of caps in them, but with grey plastic. the gray and red ones are usually completely crap, the orange ones were a bit newer and seem to be better - but still I would recommend to replace them - they also have a tendency to leak and fail.
    Also, whenever possible, I would replace those old trim pots. I had a LOT of these pots, that simply fell apart, due to corrosion at the silvery-spring-thingy... Same with those pcb-mounted fuse holders, by the way...
    Oh, and: Rauschen = hiss, Brummen = hum, Rumpeln = low noise / rumbling, Hinten = rear (speakers), Übernahme = take over, in this situation it seems to be "save", but it could also mean "crossover", e.g. in a frequency crossover - or crossover distortion (Übernahmeverzerrungen) ;)
    Cheers!

    Manuel,
    I noticed on one of the missing pads that there was something, a component lead, a wire, or something poking through the hole, but obviously not soldered because the pad was missing. I am as much in the dark as you on how the heck this happened! This should be a quite interesting project! Kudos to you for doing this one for us to see!

    The "übernahme" button is for saving the FM stations. And "diff. quadro" is for differential (pseudo) quadrophonic output.

  • @alancordwell9759
    @alancordwell9759 4 года назад

    Happy Easter! Hinten = behind or rear speakers. I think the monitor is an input for off-tape monitor if you have a 3-head tape deck. I.e you can monitor the recording as it is made. Diff-quadr is probably what we used to call 'Haffler' quadrophonic back in the day, it was nothing more than the rear speakers connected in series across the left and right main outputs, so that they reproduce the difference between the left and right channels. A weird sound if you hear it on its own, vocals in particular become phased out. But it does add something to the listening experience. Looks a fine machine, looking forward to more! Stay safe!

    The "pegel" is "contour / loudness deepness level plus balance". The "lautstarke" is the "volume level control". Specific for a lot of Brauns from late 70s. There is special procedure as how to set pegel for natural sound in the manual.

  • @showstopperrob1097
    @showstopperrob1097 4 года назад

    The loudspeaker connections. One set off rechts /links or better right and left are for 4Ohm and the other for 8 ohm. Then hinten, that means rear. It's a pseudo quadrophonic connection.
    This means it's not a quadrophonic receiver, otherwise there were 4 power amps. This you can do with every modern amp aswell. They took the plus from left and right and it gives you an other demension to your sound. Just try it connect your loudspeakers as usual and put an extra cable from your left and right to one loudspeaker. It will give you an extra demension as I wrote before.

    Hi Manuel, Thanks for this new interesting project. I have a general question about Braun electronics and it also applies to other German brands like Uher. I have noticed in the various pieces of electronics from Braun you have repaired, and those I have myself -- a CE-1000 tuner and a CSV 500 amp, weighing 23 kg together -- that the potentiometers all have that shape with 4 cylindrical "poles" at the corners. Do you happen to have identified a brand or to know a possible source for their replacement. What is the wisdom about potentiometers which are sometimes completely stuck. Lubricant ? Alcohol ? Thanks again.

    • @electronicsoldandnew
      @electronicsoldandnew  4 года назад +1

      I’m afraid I don’t know what brand those are. As for stuck pots, try alcohol, or contact cleaner. Sometimes I even spray WD40 in and then wash it out with alcohol once it releases.

    • @DerekHerbst747
      @DerekHerbst747 4 года назад +1

      I have had success freeing up siezed potentiometer shafts by heating them up. Obviously this method is good for metal shafts only. I use a smd heat gun to heat it up until the old dry lubricant melts, and then spray WD40 into the shaft and keep turning it. This can require several attempts before success is achieved.

      Otherwise known as the Hafler effect where a second set of speakers are connected together by joining their -ve tabs, and the +ve tabs go to the amps +ve outputs.
      No earth connections are made.

      May I request help from you in deciphering the schematic?. Looks like I have to undertake this by myself, but I am not good at schematics or aligning the schematic with the actual sections on the amp. If I can get the trace figured out and aligned to the amp parts I can start understanding what goes where, and what points to measure. I do understand a bit, so I'm not starting as a newbie but still way behind on this stuff

The channel is a hobby for me and I have personal projects that take up all the (little) spare time I can muster. The video series on that amp is all I can offer. I have in fact another one in the pipeline to restore, and would probably be able to do some explaining as I do the new video series. however, I don’t know when I will be able to get to that project at this moment.
