So true, even the soldiers want no part of this bullshit the politicians have created, they just want to live life and have a good time.
We are all human. Reminds me of that Sting song: Sting - Russians. Btw I'm curious how you italicized your text lol. I only know *bold*
Jw4n9 _italics_ is with an underscore "_" before and after the text and you can also -strikethroughs- with a dash "-".
Abraham Williams Much appreciated. Now I can express myself better in comments lol. Funny how changing the way a word looks can do that.
-it works- _haha_
Simon, I don't know if you get to read any of these comments, but your VICE reports are the best. You do excellent, revealing interviews of the people and soldiers, and you set everything up with necessary background information, so we know what we are watching. Not all the VICE reporting does that. As I've mentioned before, I eagerly await new reports from you. Excellent job during a difficult, tense situation.
Absolutely spot on. Exactly my thoughts.
@willl 88 WDYM one sided?? The very reason people tend to like his reporting is because he's NOT biased.

It is just like the Nazi fighters back in WW2 when the Soviet strom the Berlin and the Nazi have to armed all the teenage. The difference is only you are freely to join the Crimean army.

How does one take an oath to Crimea? as far as im concerned it is just a territory that is being disputed by Ukraine and Russia.
The whole thing is made up by Putin's own ambitions. Crimea has no right to do anything like that: not by inner Ukraine's law, not by international law.
The referendum, russian troops, the borders blockage, self-defense forces made up of local and foreign russian criminals.
This is the biggest international crime you can possibly imagine. But things like this happened before: you can revise Sudeten Crisis in 1938 when Hitler took a land of his neighbor in exactly same way Putin is taking Crimea now. Back then a world community just gave it away and... well, you know what happened next.
war love Jesus. I'm having a hard time understanding a single word you say.
The thing is - i am russian and crimean. I've been at Maidan from november to february and now i see what's happening in my homeland with my own eyes.
I've heard everything our new government said and how it was made up as something related to Nazism by Russian television. I see how russian troops, military vehicles, battle ships, submarines, helicopters, artillery are coming every day. I know who Aksenov and Konstantinov (the head of our new self-proclaimed government) are and exactly why they serve Putin now. I know exactly why this referendum is illegal. I've seen all kinds of criminal acts taken by these self-proclaimed local defense forces.
Take a note: instead of supporting everything civilized community considers unacceptable, try to find out the truth behind everything your local television tells you. Don't believe russian, ukrainian or whatever media you'r watching. Search for facts or see with your own eyes. Then you'll be free from all the shit they are feeding you with.
MrFarover so I have to ask, where does the actual populance of crimea stand? Do they want to join russia? Additionally, how much of the kiev'en type protesters are actually neo-nazi's? During times of revolution, extremist powers tend to grow and rise through the chaos, and having neo-nazi's clawing up to power in kiev could be just as dangerous as Crimea separating from the Ukraine. I'm an american BTW I just would love to hear a perspective that isn't skewed as fuck.
*****
Neo-Nazis is a misnomer. They've been shit on by Moscow for years and certainly frame some of their protest in a free Ukraine, but
most of the Russian news crap about Neo-Nazis is like that rule for internet blogs, eventually in every blog someone gets called a Nazi. There is no discrimination, the Ukraine did however try to re-vitalize their language, outlawed by the Soviets (ie RUssians) for 60 years and so now they do signs in Ukrainian, passports, and the like, not Russian. Soviet colonists thus feel they are being shit on, but it's no different than using Irish place names over anglicized ones in Ireland. Go to Russia, where I live, lots of people with swastika tatoos, but 95% of people are just regular folk, and some nationalists are just that, not Nazis.
naponroy I'm hugely against swastikas, what they represent is brutal and disgusting, but I can understand what you're getting at, however even though they are normal people standing by a revolution revolving around discrimination is a wrong path to take IMO. I'm by no means rooting for the bastard putin, but I sincerely hope that the nationalist movement doesn't move towards neo-nazi elements. Also don't listen to idiots who believe that Crimea wants to separate it's so fucking obviously a goddamn hoax by Putin it's so stupid, this is like WWII all over again.

In the Soviet Union days, these people used to be called the Useful Idiots. The ones that would enforce the rules of their masters without demanding freedom or power themselves.
These people still think that the Soviet Union exists.
Another great report! The young Ukrainian soldier at the end summed things up best - politics and guns don't motivate, but.....spring weather and pretty girls sure do!
I feel so sorry for these folks, the common people, whose lives are forced into chaos and uncertainty by the sick greed of the TPTB from the western world.
What are you talking about western world? They didn't even care what was going on at this point. Quit waffling.
Where can I find up-to-date information about their numbers?
It is practically imposible to have objective information about whats going on, and you want up-to-date numbers?!
Sad and fascinating I agree
So, here's a question: Since Crimea is (as I understand it) reliant upon infrastructural supplies from mainland Ukraine, what happens to Crimea when Ukraine cuts off those supplies if the referendum goes towards Russia?
Also, is there any international oversight (besides Russian) in the region to ensure the referendum isn't just a total joke-vote?
Also-also, how long do you reckon its gonna take for things to get bloody when they try to force the Ukrainian army to leave behind their equipment (ie, weapons)?
That's simple, Russia will tell them that if they cut off supplies to Crimea, Russia cuts off gas supplies to Ukraine.
Kostia Kaploon And when Ukraine says 'Go for it, you're now under sanctions anyway."'?
I mean, you realize this isn't much of a threat at this point, yes?
Winter's almost over, and the EU has enough gas stockpiled they can very likely supply much of Ukraine's previously-Russian imported gas for the time being.
30% of EU's nat. gas comes from Russia, sure, but 70% of Russia's energy exports go to EU (much of it through Ukraine) and their economy is already shitting the metaphorical bed - which of those two do you think is going to be hurting worse when that cut-off happens, eh?
Kostia Kaploon
I wonder how long the Russian economy would survive when they cut off 70% of their export in one go.
I've seen a report by another journalist that showed Russia is transporting telecommunication towers, electricity generators and so on through the Kerch strait into Crimea so they are preparing for that
MrVaaran
How are they paying for it?
Also: It does not matter what the referendum says. It can not become a part of Russia, international law is clear on this.
Who ever says that Russia is bad for legally taking Crimea without war, needs to learn how the US got Texas.
Or how the Mexicans got Mexico? This isn't 1845 anymore.

The ski mask has replaced the brown shirt. Now they can take them off, stop pretending to not be Russian troops, hopefully go back "home". Maybe the Cossacks will hang around to smack around the 20% non-voters and 5% "no" voters who did vote. Oh, and the motorcycle gang leader, too...
"I care", the reason anybody joins any military or peacekeeping force. Honestly I don't care but am so happy there are some people out there that do and want to protect. I have no opinion on the subject of the Crimean Peninsula, I just felt the need to comment because people that care are the only ones who put themselves in the line of fire when innocent people are involved.

To be continued.... 8 years later. We shall see what Crimeans think of Russia. Perhaps Ukraine was not perfect, few governments are. But worse than Russia?
Nobody is going to ask those "Crimeans".
They were brought on the places of the native Crimeans, who were deported by Stalin.
They were reborn under Russia, their standard of living doubled in few years. While Ukraine that claimed Crime is theirs, cut them water and electricity supply for years
They don’t even have running water anymore. Thanks Putin
Vice are doing an amazing job of covering this conflict, all the news on TV talks about is that fucking plane that vanished which is tragic but comparatively not all that bloody important! Thanks guys
I was drinking yesterday, but I am in the army now...
After watching a few of these, I think it is clear. I do not know enough about the people in both regions to say that this issue should be solved by any outside force, beyond those already in the region. I sincerely hope, the US and NATO sit this one out, regardless of Soviet-era treaties.
The problem is if the US and NATO sit this one out, it's not the people of the region that will "solve the issue", it will be the warlords (under Putin) who will just divide a defenseless piece of land, regardless of people.
Well not the play the ignorant American card, but I've only been alive for 23 years, and we have been at war for last 12, again, I sincerely believe this isn't our business.
This is Russia getting it's forces closer to Europe, that's the reason NATO and the US got involved in the first place. Because if Ukraine falls, next door is Poland, and that's NATO territory already. This is the start of the second cold war, let's just hope it doesn't lead to the third world one.
I really don't think it is, even under Putin, Russians have more freedom than Soviet Russia under Gorbachev, the Russian military is 1/5th the size of what is was during the 70's and 80's, there are protests in Moscow discrediting the seemingly great respect Putin has from all Russians. All of these things wouldn't be possible under the old Soviet regime. There are not proxy wars occurring currently in South America and Indochina sponsored by the West or Pro-Communist countries, and the West and Russia have gone through a period of spending cuts on military. There is also the caveat that for Ukraine to be a sovereign nation, they had to return all of their nuclear assets to Russia, in which they agreed, basically Putin is moving on a non-nuclear power, something he couldn't do with Poland. I disagree that this is another cold war, the cold war is over, and has been over since 91', what we are seeing is modern day countries being active in their own spheres of influence.
This aged so badly I think I might have a stroke.

From the news reports Putin believes in self determination for the people of Crimea and endorsed this referendum. Well if Putin is all about the peoples freedom of self determination, lets give Chechnya a referendum. Oh that's right Putin would lose land in Chechnya if they had a referendum so he wouldn't allow that.
But the people of the autonomous region of Crimea decided to hold a referendum. Why won't the usa take its base at okinawa back home?

In the current crisis over the Russian "invasion" of Crimea (is it an invasion when the population seems to want to be invaded and no violence occurs?), U.S. protests seem rather hypocritical to the world. After all, recently, the United States has attacked or invaded six countries -- Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya using ground troops or manned aircraft and Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia using unpiloted drone aircraft dropping bombs. In all of these instances, even if the local government directly or tacitly approved of the U.S. military action, many of the country's people did not.
If Maine wanted to join Canada but the US wouldn't let them, would it be an invasion if we went? How about Alaska. It's still an invasion

Russia's history begins in Ukraine, so it would be naive to say that it is not Her backyard.
I'll be honest with you, I think Putin is the devil, but so is Obama; people get too caught up in the politica and feel like they must jump in to defend their side... But hear this... People, in general, want the exact same things; peace, wealth and love... The greed of the individuals governing any place in the world deserves not to represent its people.
I don't think bloodshed is required for humanities future, we can all come to harmony by ridding the world of these evil individuals that talk about UN or EU or any other governing body... We are but products in the machine.. Waging war for people we don't know, for reasons we don't truly understand... Maybe its time for change... Not that Obamanation kind of change but something real and positive...
I look forward to hearing from you :D
Osama Binladen A lot of nations history begins in others backyards, but if you read of some of the mistreatment that happened to the Ukraine under the Stalins rule, you can see why they would be reluctant to go back to Russia and instead want to give the EU a try.
