I don’t see any batting greatness in Ranathunga. It’s wired that how he was able to recognize In international level with his mediocre batting credentials..
Arjuna Ranatunga may not be the most eye-catching of batsmen, true, may not have got those big hundreds either. His record in Tests may sound quite moderate too, despite being still sufficient. However, 7500 runs at an average of 36 and a strike rate of 78 had not been that mediocre at all in ODIs for a batsman who had represented the era 1982-2000 .... Yes, there had been a few batsmen who averaged 40/40+ in ODIs during this period too. But, except for the almost incomparable/peerless Viv Richards who maintained an ultra-explosive strike rate of 90 which had been one of a kind until mid '90s, only Zaheer Abbas and Dean Jones among them (who averaged 40/40+ in ODIs) had strike rates higher than 70. These two had 85 and 72.5 respectively. Miandad, Haynes, Greenidge, despite being top batsmen of the day in their own right averaging 40/40+ in the format, had their strike rates in 60s .... The 82* by Ranatunga which is on display here had been in the Singer Trophy held in Sri Lanka in mid '94. It's during the match against Australia in the same tournament that Tendulkar scored his very first hundred in ODIs having taken part in 80+ ODIs already by then, so he had only started his way towards the greatness in the format. Mark Waugh had been yet to develop as a top-drawer batsman in the format. The likes of Gary Kirsten and Michael Beven had just made their debut/s. Out of the bunch of batsmen who were to dominate the format in the decade to come, only Lara & Saeed Anwar had scored a few outstanding hundreds already by '94. These two had already started showing what they were truly capable of, but both had still been in the initial period of their careers. Vinod Kambli, Basit Ali, Inzamam-ul-Haq had already given the glimpses of their potential, still they all had been pretty early in their careers, eventually it's only Inzamam who did any sort of justice to their early promise. Sanath Jayasuriya had been yet to establish himself as one of the most-feared batsmen, despite having a few half-centuries already under his belt. Ricky Ponting had been yet to make his debut on the international stage .... The likes of Adam Gilchrist had been unheard of on the international stage, and the likes of Richie Richardson, Robin Smith, etc. were considered attacking batsmen despite their strike rates hovering 65-70 for the most part of their ODI careers .... That had been the context by '94 .... The fact here is that most top-order and middle-order batsmen back then from early '80s to mid '90s were happy to maintain an average of 30 with a strike rate 55-60-65 in this format, so ones who could average 35 at strike rates of 75+ were certainly above-average, there were not many such batsmen then (unlike in this era 2010-2020-2022 where the game has become pretty much an over-hyped circus made almost excessively batting-friendly in almost every aspect for nothing but the commercial exploitation, thereby killing the balance between the bat and ball which previously existed for decades ...). Back in those days, most teams were happy to score 250 in an ODI, a score in excess of 300 was considered a luxury. That had been the context then, that's why one cannot blindly compare these numbers/statistics across different eras without such contextual awareness/understanding. In terms of sheer elegance/aesthetics in batsmanship and the ability to score big hundreds, Ranatunga may not match even his team mate Aravinda De Silva who represented pretty much the same era 1984-2003 (despite De Silva being 2 years junior to Ranatunga), still in terms of the average and the strike rate too he's almost there with De Silva who had averaged 35 with an above-average strike rate of 81 for his day. In addition, Ranatunga had been someone who batted with the end result in mind more often than not, he used to play marshaling every resource he had despite how limited it seemed/seems at times. Despite not having been blessed with the perfect physique, the eye-catching elegance in strokeplay or the ability to score big hundreds, he could still play decisive innings of 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, etc. which still proved vital in achieving the winning totals in his era. That's why he had been still effective and could win many ODIs for Sri Lanka as a batsman alone too, this 82* on display here is only one such example .... I have no reason to glorify him, he was certainly not someone without flaws, still he was not all that mediocre either (as you had implied above in your comment !...) at least in ODIs ....
He has his own batting style, No man can lead the Sri Lankan Cricket Team like him. The best and most successful captain Sri Lanka ever made.
