Such a moving song, and yes, it is a true story. From the Irish Post, "As many people know, the heart wrenching-ballad Grace tells the true story of Grace Gifford and Joseph Plunkett, who were married in Kilmainham Gaol hours before he was executed by firing squad for his role in the Easter Rising of 1916." If you search the Easter Rising in Ireland in 1916 you will get an idea of what it was, and sometimes still is, the reality of being Irish. Luke Kelly was one of the members, I particularly love his singing, and recommend that you listen to a bit of his work. Grace is a sad song, I type these words to you with tears on my face. But happy in my heart to know that this old tune is still working its magic, and forever remembers this love story it was written ion remembrance for.
As an Englishman I find it strange that people never mention the fact the Joseph Plunkett and many of his 13 comrades went to their graves believing that they were hated by the Irish people, which is very sad. People also forget to mention that Thomas MacDonagh was Grace's brother-in-law and married to Grace's sister Muriel and was executed 24hrs before Joseph, so Grace actually lost 2 men in her life over that 24 hrs, not just 1.
Hi Sarah, it was a pleasure to see your reaction to the Dubliners and AC-DC. Maybe I have something from the same era for you. I am German, now 60 years old. When the Berlin Wall fell, I immediately traveled from Dresden (formerly East Germany) to Hamburg to visit my relatives. On that evening, "The Pogues," an Irish folk-rock band, were playing. They were a mix of Irish folk music and punk, and the instrumentation was fantastic with a tin whistle, banjo, mandolin, and accordion. The whole crowd was jumping (pogoing). I've only experienced something like that live again at an AC-DC concert. Perhaps this is something for you. I would recommand "If I should fall from grace....."
This is the true story of Joseph Plunkett who fought for Irish freedom and was executed by the British. The reference to blood upon the rose is a poem Joseph wrote: "I see his blood upon the rose And in the stars the glory of his eyes, His body gleams amid eternal snows, His tears fall from the skies. I see his face in every flower; The thunder and the singing of the birds Are but his voice-and carven by his power Rocks are his written words. All pathways by his feet are worn, His strong heart stirs the ever-beating sea, His crown of thorns is twined with every thorn, His cross is every tree.”
Sarah , it is most regrettable that you picked the wrong version of this performance to react to. Had you looked you would have found a longer version featuring the late Jim McCann's spoken introduction where he gave a background to this beatiful song that he was about to sing. it is absolutely a true story, about an Irish poet and patriot Joseph Plunkett who was executed by the British for his leadership role in the Dublin Easter Rising of 1916. Plunkett was one of the seven men who signed the Proclamation, and for that he was, like the others, condemned by a British military tribunal to death by firing squad. The Grace of the title was Joseph's fiance Grace Gifford who was brought into the prison just hours before her true love's execution, along with a priest and they were married. They spent just fifteeen minutes together under supervision, and she was then escorted out of the prison. Although her marriage was so cruelly cut short, and she was quite young, Grace would never remarry, and would die still widowed in 1969
Lovely song! 😊 The song was written in 1985 by brothers Frank and Seán O'Meara and is about artist Grace Gifford who married Joseph Mary Plunkett in the chapel at Kilmainham Gaol just hours before he was executed by a firing squad in 1916.
A very true story and the ramifications of this struggle are still playing out today, this is recent Irish history, thankfully we're slowly moving on. Love you're vids, check out luke Kelly singing about Derry, the town I loved so well 😊
Yes it's a true story! It's one of the top Irish songs of all times. Google Grace Gifford who married Plunkett four hours before he was shot for defending his Country.
Sarah let me explain why i leave a heart and a thumbs up the heart is for topic you bring and the thumbs up is that the topic you bring whether music or information is that its always amazing ❤👍
Good morning Lady ........... wonderful song . sadly is very true .... I believe they were only married for 15 minutes before the british executed Joseph ...... Jim McCann tells ya all about it in a version he does by himself . Love from Dublin Ireland 💚💚💚
Yes, this was a true story. Joseph Mary Plunkett was executed for his part in the Irish rebellion of 1916 and because he was a signatory of the Proclamation of Independence. He married Grace Gifford in Kilmainham Gaol the day before his execution. Despite being a young woman, Grace died in 1955 without ever remarrying.
THIS GRACE AND THE FILDES OF ATHERY AND THE TIWN I LOVED SO WELL ARE 3 SONGS THAT COULD REFLECT NOT JUST IRELAND BIT ANY OTHER COUNTRY IB THE WORLD WHERE THERE SUFFERING AND WAR
This is a true story. It's about Joseph Plunkett, who fought for irelands freedom from Britain. He married his sweetheart, Grzce Gifford. They were married for 15 minutes in 1916.
It's a very powerful song even now... Just check out celtic fans singing it...its culturally one of the greatest songs ever written. Yo us celts i suppose.. but theres a message in there tae... Or a question rather.... Why?
Imagine the man who he sings about is one of irelands true leaders him and his kind took an empire to the peace table a few years after the uprising in 1916.
I find this song even more beautiful because the granddaughter of the Irish rebel MP Bobby Sands sings there. Her name is Erin Sands and sings directly in the walls of the Kilmainham Jail.❤😢 ruclips.net/video/JM1QxhLBRUw/видео.htmlsi=A9wAOci_-yZpZUHq Is maith liom é. The failed independance of Ireland. Every one of these men who tried to speak for a independent ireland were taken out and shot in the morning just like the men from 100 years before who were hung. The Easter uprising is a sad part of a beautiful history. Shortly after this Ireland gained independance but Grace and Joseph only shared 10 sweet minutes togethor.
Joseph Plunkett was one of the Easter Rising in April 1916. He was dying of cunspuntion (tuberculosis). He was impersonal in Kilmarnam jail. He married Grace in the chapel, then they got to spend one hour in his cell. He was shot by a British firing squad the next morning. She never remarried.
@@ryanflanigan6362 I think your auto spell has kicked in, its "imprisoned" (not impersonal) and in "Kilmainham" (not Kilmarnam jail / gaol) and of course everyone forgets to mention the fact that Grace lost "2 men" over that 24 hours and her brother in law Thomas MacDonagh, who was married to Grace's sister Muriel, was also executed on the morning of Graces wedding day (3rd May 1916). So it wasn't just Joe she lost.

Thank you for sharing the story with us.! :) x
He was shot by the Sherwood foresters from Nottingham uk
Yeah there’s been many changes to the lineup as you know, Luke Kelly and Ronnie Drew in the same band, both fantastic singers
Grace Gifford never remarried either.

Suggest you listen to The Fields of Athenry another song on a similar theme.
i second that i love it

She always sing like that pal
The People of Ireland must now rise up to what is happening to our wonderful land, no more woke government let our Ireland be free God Bless Ireland
Do you not think that the north still being ruled by Britain is still Irelands biggest problem. Are you ok that England still owns part of Ireland.
@@tdogg1157: sadly he doesn't care. He'd rather support a different agenda, one that promotes divisiveness, prejudice and racism.
You should listen to Erin Sands version her grandfathe was Bobby Sands who died in jail when he went on hunger strike.

Grace married her love of her life ireland Joseph Mary plunkett who was killed by Britain forces in jail
