I think the next one should be Bacurau 😊
Elite Squad
SO COOL
For some reason, even brazillians don't know, but Fernando Meirelles is the director of the movie "Two Popes" in 2019 too.
Nossa, não sabia mesmo! 😅
He also directed “The Constant Gardner” with Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weiss.
I definitely need to dive into Brazilian movies brotha as it seems like I’m missing out on so incredible movies, big time!
Do it!!
Fun facts: a lot of actors have City of God as their first gig. Since there wasn't much black representation in Brazil's TV and cinema, they selected hundreds of people from the favelas for a crash course where they learn some things about interpretation. Also, City of God was not filmed in the REAL City of God (a famous favela in Rio de Janeiro) because of the criminal conflicts at that time.
Some actors in the movie have a great career until today, like Leandro Firmino, Douglas Silva and Seu Jorge - he is in two Wes Anderson movies, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Asteroid City.
Leandro Firmino (Lil' Dice) went obscured for a lot of time... But now he is in a Brazillian series called "Impuros", which is kind of "Breaking Bad in Rio's Favela". He is goddamn funny you wouldnt believe it!
Matheus Natchergaele who plays Sandro Cenoura was the only known actor, he was in 'O auto da Compadecida' a huge sucess here in Brazil before City Of God.
They copied several things from Nelson Pereira's film "Rio 40 graus" , including the beginner actors. I actually think Rio 40 Degrees is a better film than City of God.
Some Brazilian movies I recommend:
- A Dog's Will
- Invisible Life
- Basic Sanitation
- Mars One
- Four Days in September
- Hour of the Star
- Barren Lives
- Entranced Earth (this one influenced Godard a lot)
The Second mother
I love to see people outside of Brazil discovering our movies, it's good to see you really enjoy this one. I'll insist, watch Auto da Compadecida (A Dog's Will), I also recomend to you Elite Squad.
I think Dog's Will is only funny for portuguese speakers... I don't think the english subtitles would work.
I’m definitely checking out both of those! Thanks for the recommendations!
Since you got City Of God, A Dog's Will and Elite Squad, you'll get the most loved films of Brazillian Culture. Each one of them got morphed in popular culture inside Brazil and a lot of it's dialogues and scenes are in everyone's tongue
@@renatopeteanmarino8094 sim, porque inclusive o brasileiro comum entende todo o humor e pormenores dos filmes que assistimos dublados ou legendados vindos dos Staites, né? 😂
It is in a favela, and the word is not offensive at all. There are a lot of people proud to be born in a favela here in brazil. Great work bro!
I’m glad you clarified that! I’ll keep that in mind.
The word favela originated in the late 19th century in Brazil. It is believed to come from a plant called favela (Cnidoscolus quercifolius), which grows in the northeastern region of the country. During the War of Canudos (1896-1897), Brazilian soldiers camped in a hilly area covered with these plants. After the war, when the soldiers returned to Rio de Janeiro, they expected to receive housing as a reward for their service. However, the government failed to fulfill its promises, leaving them without financial support or a place to live. With no alternatives, they occupied a hill in the city, naming it "Morro da Favela" in reference to their wartime experience. Over time, the term favela became associated with informal settlements in urban areas.
Using the word favela is not inherently problematic. It serves as an important term to describe and acknowledge the social and economic struggles faced by millions of people living in these communities.
Thanks for the insight!
Bacurau is also pretty good and a brutal social criticism.
This move was selected for 4 Oscar categories 2 years after it's release for a reason. It is a true masterpiece, way ahead of it's time in terms of cinematography and very different from everything done until that point in the 2000s. Some people consider it the best of that decade. The violence did scared some people and did not allow it to compete for best foreign language movie on the Oscars in 2003, but it went back to cinemas to be able to be selected for other categories for the 2004 Oscars.
You're very charismatic! Loving your reviews!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!
Great review! I really like to see Brazilian films through foreigners’ eyes so I don’t get stuck in my bubble. On a completely different note, “the second mother “ is a beauty. Hope you get the chance to watch it.
Thanks so much! I’ll take a look at that one!
No problem to use the word favelas. If you prefer can use "comunidade"
Elite Squad ( 1 and 2 They both are a must watch) will give you too much focus on Rio de Janeiro, go with A Dog's will or Bacurau to get a northeastern perspective. Sadly, to get a southern or an amazonian perspective you will need to dive in the miniseries realm (o tempo e o vento, a casa das sete mulheres e a muralha)
O Quatrilho is about Italian immigration in the South
@maryuale didn't watched it, couldn't recommend it
One of the greatest movies of all time.
It was definitely a great one!
A comedic film, which is dark and has general dark sense of humor that i would recomend is "O Cheiro do ralo", i guess is really different then everything people send it to you....
O Cheiro do Ralo is a brilliant film, but I think a lot of its genius comes from the nuances of the Portuguese language. Selton Mello’s incredible performance is both darkly comedic and dead serious, and a huge part of that comes from his word choices, delivery, and timing. Some of the humor and tension might not fully translate if you're not fluent in Portuguese. That being said, if you're into bizarre, character-driven films, it's definitely worth a watch!
Eu assisti no cinema. Adorei kkk
by the way: once you start asking brazilians for recommendations, you can forget about everything else, we'll have you covered for the next decade.
Your next Brazilian movie should be definitely The Second Mother. Masterpiece!
You just learned that Brazilians are faithful viewers and we love to see people getting in love with our culture. 😊
Fun fact: Rocket is the alter ego of book author Paulo Lins. He just thought making the protagonist a photographer rather than a writer would be better in cinematic terms.
As for Angelica, the character was clearly an outsider (a middle-class girl who would occasionally hang out with the people in the favela until she got into a serious relationship with Bene), so I guess the book doesn't follow her story after Bene's death. Which is very realistic, unfortunately: once outsiders leave, people in favelas wouldn't hear from them anymore in the pre internet era.
Leandro Firmino is amazing. I saw in theatre (real theathre not cinema). He is absolutely something out of this world
my main recomendation is the other two movies that compleate the holy trinity of brazilian Cinema
- Cidade de Deus
- Auto da Compadecida (A Dog's Will)
- Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad)
See “the wolf at the door” is brilliant
this one is so good! and it's also based on a true story!
Love your 3 latest reviews on acclaimed Brazilian movies. While you are at it, you may want to check out Elite Squad. Thanks
I’ve heard great things about it!
I totally recommend "The Second Mother" (2015) and "Aquarius" (2016). Both good examples of Brazilian cinema
Watch now "Bacurau- 2019" is very good.
Cinderella Baiana, worst Brazilian movie of all time, yet more beloved than Emilia Perez 🤣
oh one that I really love, it’s just a romantic ballad “Lisbela and the Prisoner”, Selton Mello that plays Rubens Paiva in I’m still here is in that one too.
😂😂😂
Agora precisamos pedir desculpas. Ninguem consegue desver este filme.
as someone born and raised in favelas, I feel its ok to call the common name "favela", but if you want to be respectful like media etc usually call "comunidade" which means "community"
Elite Squad is another iconic Brazillian movie!
I know exactly what you mean! It's a powerful movie, but not one I want to watch too often either. I'll add Bacurau to my watchlist!
So, you comment about bad movies, but I was thinking about other gernes. One of the things I love about streaming is watching different things from different countries you can learn some much watching a different take on a basic romance plot or anything like that. So here a some that crossed my mind now:
Dois Coelhos (Two Rabbits) its more action thriller
O Homem do Futuro (The Man from the future) wagner Moura, from civil war is in it.
Hoje eu quero voltar sozinho (the way he looks)
The first two it's been like a decade since I watched and I still remember enjoying. The third it's the first brazilian teenage queer movie that I remember watching
The way he looks is soooo 🥰
My problem with this film, as well as elite squad, is that they are films made by White, middle or upper class, that doesn't have the favela experience . The favela has violence but it is much more than violence. Kasa Branca (a new film from 2024), I don't know if it will be distributed internationally, it's a film that deviates from this stereotype. I hope it has international distribution, it's worth watching as a counterpoint to this film.
Cinema é uma arte elitista. Fica para a próxima geração corrigir esses erros sem apagar os trabalhos feitos anteriormente e que abriram portas.
Marte 1 é um belíssimo filme que merece mais atenção.
After Im Still Here, it has been really cool to see the interest of “gringos” in our cinema! City of God is an excellent film, and portrays a Brazilian reality, more specifically in Rio de Janeiro. Two other films that have a similar theme are Elite Squad 1 and 2 (please watch them both in sequence, the story is much better tied together that way). However, as a Brazilian, it is important to make it clear that these films portray specific realities, and that our country is MUCH bigger and has many different realities. Bacurau, Aquarius, Ó Pai Ó, and O Auto da Compadecida, for example, portray the Brazilian northeast. “Que horas ela Volta?” is a beautiful film, which talks about the social differences that simple people from other states experience when they go to work in São Paulo as domestic servants in rich families, but in a very poetic way. And finally, if you want to delve deeper into political themes, Mariguella is a recent film with Wagner Moura and Seu Jorge, two Brazilian actors with international representation.
I think this is the best Brazilian film of all time.
Anthony is becoming Brazillian 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷☺️☺️🫶🏻
Nice video!
Brazilian films are heavily loaded with subtexts that are very strong in Brazil but might go unnoticed by outsiders. The clothes (or lack of them), the tacky, the chic, the ugly, the beautiful, the noise, the dust - everything is telling a story of its own that only Brazilians truly understand.. This perhaps explains why so few Brazilian movies break through internationally, and to be honest, I think that's a good thing-Brazilians telling stories about Brazil to Brazilians.
Unfortunately, the films that do end up crossing borders are often those that focus on violence in Brazil. City of God, Elite Squad, and I'm Still Here deal with themes that are either common in other parts of the world or are framed as "violence action movies," losing their original context.
There’s a lot of comedy and drama in Brazil, but I understand that it can be hard to connect with them when you're from another country and a different reality. I've traveled a lot, and I know there's no place quite like Brazil-especially in the way it makes fun of itself and its problems in such a unique way that it almost feels innocent.
I'm really happy that with I'm Still Here becoming such a success, more people are showing interest in our culture.
Bacurau and Que Horas Ela Volta? (The Second Mother) are great
Hi Anthony. Very cool that you took our recomendation of City of God. :)
Another that I highly recommend, but that also have some violence and dark, is Elite Squad 1 & 2. It dives into the violence in the favelas from the perspective of the police and exposes corruption within the force. Wagner Moura delivers an outstanding performance in the lead role!
"Favela'' was a name of a tree with wood was commonly used on the construction of popular houses in poor neighbourhoods. That is why today the name "favelas" is associated with these communities.
Thanks for the insight!
Great work!!
Thanks a lot!
Take a look at O que isso Companheiro, its directily related to I'am still here, and also Marighella, you'll have a decent glimpse of what the dictatorship days were like in Brazil. All these 3 movies are related, asside from being true stories.
You must see the most classical brazilian movie of all time called Cinderela Baiana
No way 😂😂😂😂😂
You can also use shantytown or deprived/marginalized areas. There are also another words but I’m not pretty sure if they can be too formal
That's my favourite brazilian movie.
Elite Squad
Auto da Compadecida
Bacurau
City of god used to be as dangerous as the film portraits, but since the beggining of last decade, it has been pacified. Its farelly safe now. Most of the favelas are, actually, if the war on drugs didnt exist, and regular ppl didnt got caught up btw the drug dealers and the police, it would be much safer than a lot of middle class neighborhoods. The drug dealers that control the areas dont let anyone commit any sort of crime in the favelas. No murder, no robbery, violence of any kind actually.
The director tied a camera at a broom to shoot the opening chicken's scene!
Oh really? Thats pretty awesome!
That's the most iconic film intro ever!
I second most of what everyone else is suggesting, but I also wanted to plug two of my faves:
"Boy and the World" (O Menino e o Mundo) 2013 Animated movie, nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars 2015. A young boy named Cuca leaves his idyllic life in the countryside in search of his father who moved to the Big City. I had the great pleasure of meeting and talking with director Alê Abreu at an awards Q&A. He seemed relieved there were Brazilians there who understood the cultural context! Warning: Bring tissues. Every time I show this movie to a friend they complain I didn't warn them it would make them cry.
"Lisbela and the Prisoner" (Lisbela e o Prisioneiro) 2003 romantic comedy film directed by Guel Arraes, also starring Selton Mello who is in I'm Still Here. A very funny an theatrical movie that plays with the metalanguage of cinema, as the protagonist Lisbela is a lover of classic Hollywood who dreams her life could be like those films. The official English subs are kind of barebones IMO but I still think it's a great watch, and my personal favourite.
You should watch - Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmao and Bacurau
Hey. Some context about the Favelas: Brazil have a huge gap in equality ($) that only in the last decades starts to improve. There is demand for all kinds of «service» work (cleaning, construction, etc) and people work hard to receive almost nothing. Te only way to have a place to live is moving to distant places, that often have low or none infrastructure. Favelas are chaotic areas, where people build their houses in an irrugular way. It means that the state does little to nothing to them (no clean water, no schools, no security, nothing) and people have no choice. Violence is different depending on the place but the infamous war on drugs help to create violent gangs well armed. But the problem is much more complex. Favelas are a symptom.
Some countries start to realize that this war is impossible to win. We have some examples like Netherlands and Portugal but we still have this dogma of fighting the Drug Trade- and this only make the price of such drugs go higher.
But there are nice people, with connections, making a lot of money by making business with such gangs. And since they are rich and white, they have 0 problems.
There are so much to talk about, few things are similar to US, other very different, and everything starts with Slavery.
I grow up in one Favela. I saw terrible things but it was not even close to what happened on this movie.
Since you watched City of God, you should look for what great American Directors can say about this movie. I remember that Spielberg asked once about the “Chicken Scene” and it was made with ordinary materials- while he would expend thousands of dollars to do the same. Scorsese was another one that 🤯
I think this movie reminds me the excellent “Once Upon a Time in America” by Sergio Leone (with a different kind of violence)
I make sure to forget and never mention again any bad movies that I came across. Bad movies can't be mentioned, they must die in obscurity.
As for good movies: Carandiru, Four days in September (with Selton Melo AND Fernanda Torres), They don't wear black tie (with Fernanda Montenegro), Pixote, Isle of Flowers (short film - extremely interesting take on waste), Bye Bye Brasil (with another icon of brazilian cinema called José Wilker), Memoirs of Prison - based on the book "Scars of History" by Graciliano Ramos which is autobiographical and tells the tale of his time in prison - this is a period of another dicatorship that came before the military dictatorship of the 70's - this was during the regime of Getúlio Vargas in the 30's - Graciliano was accused of being a ... wait for it ... communist (of course). The star of this movie is the actor Carlos Vereza who is amazing.
BLINDNESS os another Meirelles film, written by the iconic José Saramago.
Two of the "bad" movies to to laugh are:
Oh! Rebuceteio (1984)
Um Pistoleiro Chamado Papaco (1986)
😂😂 morri que alguém recomendou Um Pistoleiro Chamado Papaco
so trash, so great! lol
Cinderela Baiana (1998), O Segredo da Múmia (1981), Super Xuxa Contra o Baixo Astral (1988)
Thank you for taking the time to watch our movies and review them, Anthony! I think the next movie you should watch is Elite Squad. I wish I could tell you to watch the worst Brazilian movie, it's so trashy it became a cult hahaha but it probably has no subtitles. It's called "Cinderela Baiana" it's a musical - incredibly bad. Better than Emilia Perez, though.
One of the worsts, we also have Super Xuxa contra o Baixo Astral, Lua de Cristal, Inspetor Faustão e o Mallandro, Um Pistoleiro Chamado Papaco, O Segredo da Múmia, O Sexo das Bonecas (1984), Bacalhau (1976) and plenty others awful films.
Yeah, I didn’t like Emilia Perez either 😂 thanks for watching!
My Top 5 (out Cidade de Deus)
▫️Tropa de elite (+ Tropa de elite 2)
▫️Ônibus 174
▫️Meu nome não é Jonny
▫️O Alto da compadecida.
The next one should be BACURAU by Kleber Mendonça Filho!!!
Basic Sanitation. Comedy from another culture is a challenge, but it's a great movie about politics, culture and amateur film starring FERNANDA TORRES, Wagner Moura( Civil War(2024)) and other Brazilian stars.
I'm not a movie man myself so I never watched it, but I love watching reviews of movies I will probably never watch
A movie that recommend is "Os Normais" to check Fernanda Torres in a comedic role. It is nothing good or artistic, it is funny and based on a sitcom of the same name (my all time favorite sitcom), but I don't know if there is a version with subtitles. Also, the worst movies probably won't have subtitled versions
city of god is the name of that favela/neighborhood/poor comunity.
Now watch Elite Squad!!!! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
if you want a bad movie you can watch Cinderela Baiana. If you want some blockbuster you can watch elite squad 1 and 2 as gun movie; if I were you, ó paí ó, or my mom is a character as comedy movies. a dog's will and carlota joaquina princess of Brazil are one of our great comedies; The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, bacurau, marighella, the assailant, madam satan, Aquarius, the second mother, the deceased, quilombo and neighboring sounds are our great dramas
Ahh you asked about bad movies:
We have an Icon of B horror stories movies called Zé do Caixão.
Its hilarious. Its supposed to be bad 😂
Dont know if his movies has english subtitles tho
next! watch Elite Squad (both 1 and 2 are great)
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🇧🇷🇧🇷
You should have watched the credits, it shows the real people, including the interview of knockout Ned.
The real knockout Ned
Ah damn! I’ll have to look at that then! I did stop it once the credits started rolling.
@AnthonyAPerez it worth
Please be aware Bacurau have some B movie leanings. It's a great movie, that spoke strongly to us, but i don't find it a masterpiece by any stretch.
another great review about another great brazilian movie (again pls watch pixote!!!)
I’ll throw it on the list! Thanks for watching!!
Pixote is the City of God of the 80s, powerful movie, the acting is so good that it feels like a documentary sometimes. The main actor's Fernando Ramos da Silva's real life story is very sad, he was killed by the police when he was just 21, it was made into a film called 'Who killed Pixote?'
@@fernandomaron87 and Marília Pêra's with a masterpiece performance
@@laurianelivi Agreed. She completely takes out the third act by assault. The final scene with her and Fernando is heartbreaking.
If you want some terrible Brazilian film, but you laugh a lot, check out "Cinderela baiana". The actress is a dancer who was verrrryyy popular at that time and the movie is so terrible that became cult ahahahaha
I’ll look into it 😂
Nossa, não kkkkk Cinderela Baiana a gente ri pelos memes, mas acho que é chato demais pra conseguir rir realmente assistindo
😂😂
@@Amanda-mv4qr que isso, obra de arte hahahaha
The majoity of actors were not professional actors at all. It is not uncommon on brazillian movies due to the "Cinema Novo" tradition that borrowed this style from the italian neorealism. Some of them became actors, others not. The actor that played Little Z became a taxi driver and he is the exact opposite of the character.
If you like horror and trash, you have to watch the movies of Zé do Caixão
On bad brazilian movies, my suggestions would be:
- Acquaria (2003): a Mad Max YA dystopia. Takes itself too seriously despite its atrocious editing and dialoge.
- The Girl Who Killed Her Parents/The Boy Who Killed My Parents (2021): a true crime duo tells the story of The Richthofen case (a 2001 criminal case when the daughter and her at-time lover killed both of her parents to take the inheritance) from both of the two main perpetrators perceives. Very poor taste considering it talks about a real double homicide.
- most Globofilmes comedies: although some of them are moderately funny most are just some lazy cash-grabs with terrible production design, especially the Leandro Hassun ones.
- Cinderela Baiana (1998): is generally considered the worst Brazilian film ever made, but as today already achieved some cult-classic status
Cinderela Baiana >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Emilia Pérez
Cinderela Baiana >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Emilia Pérez
"Cinderela Baiana" is the Brazilian equivalent of "The Room" 😂
This one is a available in RUclips , both Selton Melo and Fernanda Torres worked no it. The history is amazing , its about The US cônsul kidnapped during The military regime (another true story). ruclips.net/video/4FRtkEbQ-8U/видео.htmlsi=lNkHtfVtz9WOjwH7
