Dear Billy, as much as I've ever loved your music and find it relevant today, as a 48 year old man, what brought me to this video really is the gorgeous timberwork behind the band. If that's your loft studio, you're a lucky man, earned it.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written about Ideology I'm listening for 27 years to the songs of Billy and this song still touches me every time
Billy Bragg Talks To The Tax Man About Politics again! Ideology, the definitive rewrite of Chimes Of Freedom (Dylan). You have to admire Billy and his beliefs as they are nothing but true and his finger is as always, on the pulse! This song is as relevant now as it was when I was a teenager. Learn it, teach it, sing it. Spread the word of Bragg! This is an important song you must pass on to the people who need it!
Great song and video - and an odd coincidence, too. Basically a re-working of Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom", as popularised by The Byrds, and with a C. Hillman on guitar!
God bless the civil service The nations saving grace While we expect democracy They're laughing in our face And although our cries get louder The laughter gets louder still Above the sound of ideologies clashing My feelings exactly. Greetings from Greece.
I looked for this today, because I *needed* to hear it after talking to my brother, who works for the federal gov't & is waiting to hear about furloughs...all because Congress can't get past IDEOLOGIES and talk to each other & serve the people they're elected to represent. Unfortunately, like many "protest" songs, this one remains relevant decades after it was first written. (BTW, love the rehearsal space!)
Nickerson's Rachmaninoff-like crescendos echoed Elvis Costello's "Oliver's Army", which echoed ABBA's Benny Anderson. What a great way to open the Malmö concert!
obligatory lyrics: When one voice rules the nation Just because they're top of the pile Doesn't mean their vision is the clearest The voices of the people Are falling on deaf ears Our politicians all become careerists They must declare their interests But not their company cars Is there more to a seat in parliament Than sitting on your arse And the best of all this bad bunch Is shouting to be heard Above the sound of ideologies clashing Outside the patient millions Who put them into power Expect a little more back for their taxes Like school books, beds in hospitals And peace in our bloody time All they get is old men grinding axes Who've built their private fortunes On the things they can rely The courts, the secret handshake The Stock Exchange and the old school tie For God and Queen and Country All things they justify Above the sound of ideologies clashing God bless the civil service The nations saving grace While we expect democracy They're laughing in our face And although our cries get louder The laughter gets louder still Above the sound of ideologies clashing Above the sound of ideologies Above the sound of ideologies Above the sound of ideologies clashing
Need more volume on your vocals brother...I think this Nation is in much need of some uplifting patriotic/political songs. I feel our song writers are missing a trick and are slacking in this department imo. Thx BB much love for you & ya band.
Don't lie about me as I am truly John Mellor's adorable partner and the guy from Sony was a murderer, John did go to a loony bin for a while and disappeared to us as many abo's in Australia have claimed many times he killed people. Also my grandmother was a Marr from Manchester.
just remember which political party got us into the mess we are in - oh and let's not even mention other minor incidents like illegal wars, extraordinary rendition, the signing of the Lisbon treaty without public consultation.....
80s conservativism secured the framework for the modern era of politics. Britain became a country with no real industrialization who relies on imports from some incredibly questionable places and can't seem to get their heads round free healthcare being a good thing.
@@robertp-i4065 Wow - my comment has NOT dated well when you think of the depths things have sunk in the past decade since I typed it - perhaps reinforcing my belief that all parties appear unwilling/unable to address the deep rooted issues of this country. Totally agree with your reply - perhaps if the left or centre left actually bothered to get their act together and offered a CREDIBLE alternative to 40 years of neoliberal economics. They don't instead they have an on/off love of the EU, mired in antisemitism & chop and change with their desire to get power - both Blair and Starmer believe that the only way to 10 Downing street is to be as ideology free as possible.
This song is more relevant today than ever.... thanks Billy 👍
Wish it wasn't though.
Billy is one of those things I'm glad hasn't changed however.
AMZING THAT THIS SONG IS AS PERINENT NOW AS IT WAS IN THE 80'S
Along with Between the Wars, I've just posted that today after voting. ;)
TRUTH
Ottawa in 2022.
Billy Bragg has been a voice of reason for much of my life, thank you, and world, listen up, goddammit!!!!

It's gotta be Norwegian Wood 😂
Isn't it good?
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written about Ideology

Billy sings from the heart he is a good man.
I love this recording.
Every song from Talking With The Taxman About Poetry is something special to me.
Beautiful
Thanks Billy

Had never listened to Billy Bragg and will definitely get more of his work.
Good to see you back Billy
Thank you for all the great music you've released over the years, Billy! 😁🙌
We must remember there are more of us than them. We have the power
Now this is why I love you..... since this, what have you become?
Bob Dylan would be proud, so very proud!!
One of the greatest song writer the 80s would of sucked without him
Honestly, a fantastic remake of this gorgeous song.
Magic Billy bloody magic...
Thank you!
Your amazing love is in the air.❤💚💙💛
Danke für die Amiga Platte B..G...

@Selwyn You nailed it!…
Sounds as good as the first time I heard it on vinyl... Wonderful!
As relevant and important now as he was in Thatchers era...God Bless ya Billy :)
The Barking Bard singing it loud and clear…
One of his or your best songs, 4 me kind of brother of Homefront ... thank you so much for sharing!
Brilliant version!! Looking forward to the new record!! Cheers from Austria!!
Billy, how is it that you keep "Blowing Me Away" more every year !
God bless the civil service
The nations saving grace
While we expect democracy
They're laughing in our face
And although our cries get louder
The laughter gets louder still
Above the sound of ideologies clashing
My feelings exactly. Greetings from Greece.
Only just found this excellent song. However did you mishear? The line goes "God Bless the SECRET service"
nice song .......chimes of freedom pt2
Always loved the original version of this song also. Sounds great with the band. Saw you guys 2 years ago at Electric Picnic, my weekend highlight...
pretty fookin awesome - even if recorded in California
Yay! Thanks for this! I can't wait to see it live in Ithaca this spring!

you like a history teacher
Class in the UK x
THIS SPRING!!! April...
This song never ages Bill - because the politicians never change.... ding dong
Just great. Back to the Billy Bragg sound I love. You don't need Hawaiian guitars, mate!
Springsteen-esque!!!! and Turner-esque!!!
Chimes of freedom :D
+jayorag - Very much the Byrds, but a nice new set of lyrics!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Funny thing is untill the Young'uns did an A'capella cover of "between the wars" I'd never heard of this magnificent man.
Chimes of Freedom flashing
Sounds great. Looking forward to the tour and new album. Does the new band have a name and are checked shirts compulsory?
When are guys coming back to the states?

Nice to see Alan Carr on keyboards
obligatory lyrics:
When one voice rules the nation
Just because they're top of the pile
Doesn't mean their vision is the clearest
The voices of the people
Are falling on deaf ears
Our politicians all become careerists
They must declare their interests
But not their company cars
Is there more to a seat in parliament
Than sitting on your arse
And the best of all this bad bunch
Is shouting to be heard
Above the sound of ideologies clashing
Outside the patient millions
Who put them into power
Expect a little more back for their taxes
Like school books, beds in hospitals
And peace in our bloody time
All they get is old men grinding axes
Who've built their private fortunes
On the things they can rely
The courts, the secret handshake
The Stock Exchange and the old school tie
For God and Queen and Country
All things they justify
Above the sound of ideologies clashing
God bless the civil service
The nations saving grace
While we expect democracy
They're laughing in our face
And although our cries get louder
The laughter gets louder still
Above the sound of ideologies clashing
Above the sound of ideologies
Above the sound of ideologies
Above the sound of ideologies clashing
US Version: "They must declare their interests, but not their company GAS/
Is there more to a seat in CONGRESS, than sitting on your ASS?"
And, at time of writing, nothing has fucking changed.

Nice rendition, too melodic though. The original album version can't be topped
True. Nothing beats the bite of those clanging guitar chords!
D you have to have a checked shirt to be in the band? ; )
the music reminds me CHIMES OF FREEDOM,but Billy has a peculiar own style.
That is deliberate - Billy adapted Dylan's tune to craft an astute commentary on politics Thatcher's England.

Am here cause of peeps mom
Plus ça change Billy. The only MP worth the bother in 2022 is Corbyn.
Never been more true. Gawd, things have only gotten worse.

What is happening in front of all the queen’s parliaments today?
Whose side is the secret service on now?

More of the same quality.
