Old English Mastiff!!!! I've had dogs in my family since I was an infant. For my birthday three years ago my husband brought home an 11 week old English mastiff my children named her Bella and she has become an absolute joy to the entire family since I am home with her while the kids are in school and my husbands at work she has bonded with me like superglue. I cannot believe the things I have seen Bella do. I speak to her like another human being and have done so since she was a baby/puppy. I don't know if that has anything to do with her current incredible level of intelligence but I can rattle off a three sentence request and she will comply as if she were another human being. I adored all breeds of dogs they are wonderful and we are very blessed that 10 to 15,000 years ago a somewhat docile wolf hung around the outside of our caves in order to access scraps from our meals. I never expected this beautiful mastiff to also be incredible I have no idea if she is an outlier in other words a fluke and maybe just a genius in her breed as I have never had another Mastiff. As I said earlier she has brought our entire family so much fun and delight... it's easy to love a dog when they are so easy to train understand everything you say and comply with your wishes in my 40 something years of life the only dog I had before Bella who was even close to her level of cognitive brilliance was a wonderful might who was half German Shepherd and half lab the latter part was the closest that our vet could guess but it was undeniable that she had a lot of shepherd in her she was a very smart dog yet nothing like this incredible mastiff call we are so lucky to currently have. My husband always wanted a mastiff just because of the size of the dog to be honest with you I was not thrilled when he brought a puppy home because I always assumed that they were just dumb drooling Giants. Well I had to retract all of my previous ignorant thoughts as Bella has shown me that intelligence can pop up in any breed even if they're not particularly known for it and also they drool only a moderate amount when bred a certain way. Bella is a low drool , fluffy coat Mastiff. The first thing I noticed about her was that her coat was so thick even though it's not long it's very thick... I called the breeder and he told me that wasn't a mistake and explained about the genetic link between the fluffy coat and Less drool. Anyway I guess I just wanted to add this because it's important to go with your heart and get a puppy that fits your family just like humans dogs are individuals and even in a breed not known for high intelligence you could run across a genius every once in a while !!
@voodoochild346 Shut the fuck up, You hate them because their "dangerous" even though they were made dangerous by PEOPLE. How about you take your ass somewhere else with your bullshit?
as for your comment about greyhounds........... they have compassion ! Im in a wheelchair permanent... my friends took me to Petsmart to get some stuff for my dog.. while in there this greyhound with a perfect shaped white heart at the end of his nose pulled his owner toward me and lay his big head on my shoulder and hugged me tight around the neck with his head... that was the best hug Ive ever had
+Amanda Vadon Do not laugh. A stupid dog is the best dog for most of us. Most of us do not have the time or space to provide mental stimulation for a smart dog. It finds ways to entertain itself, and those ways are often destructive.
+Jean on the Road lol my dipshit dad gets a bordercollie thinking it would be fun. guess who works 32 hours a week and spends another 32 with my dog lmfao.
+Amanda Vadon I have two dogs and when the fence broke one of them tried to run away but the Australian cattle dog actually herded the other back home. It was amazing. Didn't even train her to do that, it's pure instinct.
Pommeranians are stubborn, loud, lovable, cuddly, sweet, annoying, obnoxious, weird, caring, concerned, wanting, demanding, and above all wonderful. And, I miss mine so much. He was by greatest friend when I was feeling down. He also knew how to get under my skin and get on my nerves at times. However, if you want a small, friendly, sweet little ball of fluff that will live for an extremely long time and bring you a great deal of joy despite how yappy they are, Pomeranians are wonderful dogs. The smaller ones are also purse puppies for the people who like to bring their dogs everywhere. Mine was on the larger end. He also lived for 19 years. The roughest part is that they are prone to arthritis, cataracts, collapsing trachea, a loss of bowl and bladder control, and a handful of other health problems later in life. They also get to a point where they can have seasonal allergies. I truly think mine developed them because I have them. He only started getting them later in life, but they do say that dogs take on the traits of their owners. I just didn't dream that that would include literally becoming me in the spring. But, if you can handle all of that, you've got a loving companion who cares about you for their entire life.
I've only ever seen boxers on the "not so smart" list. And having had 4 boxers in my life, I have to admit that they are dumb as bricks when compared to actual smart dogs lol
For many years my best friend was an Australian dingo. I know they are not a recognized breed by the various organizations; but, having lived with one for all her life, I must say she would rank much higher in intelligence than many on your list. She understood a great deal of human speech, and acted accordingly. She was actually polite and well mannered, perhaps because I always treated her as if she was another human being, rather than a dog. She was very gentle, and excellent with children. I will always miss her deeply.
That's awesome! And that's why we mean breeds as a whole and not specific dogs. There are plenty of smart dogs that are breeds not on this list, but the average is what we put.
Sadly, here in the U.S.A. dingos are very rare. because of that, few people know about the breed. If there were enough of them so more people knew of their traits, I am sure they would have been high on your list. Since they are basically a wild dog, evolution has culled out the stupid ones and left the smartest. The same is true of wolves, I am sure you will find owners of wolves also will tell you they are much smarter than domestic dogs. "Breeding" of dogs results in the same mental degradation that happens in human lineages where there is too much inbreeding. Of course, if dingos were bred for generations as are most domestic dog breeds, they would suffer the same problems.
Technically "pit bull" isn't a recognized breed in many official kennel clubs. You're most likely thinking about the American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull terrier, or the English Bull Terrier :)
My buddy Midnight was a mix between an Australian cattle dog and a Border collie. He was the smartest dog I've ever seen. He was so sweet. Last year, on a cold night on January 20th, he was hit by a red truck. R.I.P, Midnight.
I don't think it is strictly the breed. A dog that is not considered an especially intelligent breed can still produce an individual animal that is far more intelligent that breeds considered smarter than it.
Weimaraners should be #1! My soul breed! My favorite breed next to the Pit, which doesn't surprise me didn't make the list! Such hatred and prejudice because of man!
I'm sure they are all incredibly intelligent, but I think the Ridgeback steals top prize. Intelligent enough to save me from a police dog almost killing me when I was a child. I had been left in the house by my friends policeman father, with the huge German Shepherd in the kitchen and a baby gate separating him from me. Almost immediately it jumped thr gate and got ready to attack, but I was lucky enough to have the family dog which knew me in the room. She jumped in between me and the GS and faced it down, giving me enough time to slip out another door behind me. I have no doubt she saved my life, and she was so intelligent to understand the situation and step in to protect me.
Toxic Plays MC Ours was not smart. Not at all. Very high energy, too. We finally had to give him back to my uncle in Kentucky, were he became an active member of a hunting pack. The only things that dog could do were follow a scent and run. Hunting and working breeds are not good unless you can give them the exercise they need, no matter how dumb they are.
Believe it or not, one of our neighbors has a collie that tries to herd our flock of guennie hens every time she gets bored. And if you've ever had guennies, you KNOW how next to impossible that is! Seriously, they don't give that dog enough to do!
I had two English Springer Spaniels. They were siblings from two separate litters. I lost my little girl in April to cancer. If she had lived to June, she would have been 15. I still have brother. He just turned 15 week before last. He is my old man now.
Our standard poodles are brilliant, they understand two languages and you only have to show them something once, and they get it. Non shedding, non drooling, extremely loyal, powerful, agile, and super connected to people. Definitely not sissies.
My border collie only knows a hand full of phrases "Do you want a treat" "Give me a cuddle" "Kiss" (touches nose) "Good girl" "Love you" "Walkies" "Din dins" And wannabe play fetch
Bari Naiem very true. I had one that was a quarter wolf and that dog was ingenious. He’s watch us open doors and figure it out. Almost smart as our Doberman
@@oli4442 You are correct about SH. I have found this in my research as well. Our neighbors finally gave theirs to another family for that reason. He kept running away. He was so beautiful, but he was just too stubborn and seemed kind of, well, I won't say dumb. He was a bit of a nut job, though. LOL He was cute and would speak loudly in what sounded like words. Those were his best traits. But he was just so much work for them. Often, they just have that call of the wild in them and as a result are usually escape artists.
@@oli4442 Just because they're stubborn doesn't mean they're stupid. They're a little too smart I'd say. Growing up we had a Siberian husky/German Shepherd. She used to jump the fence (which was pretty high I might add) and go to a near by dog park. This was about 8 months after we got her that she started doing that. There are quite a few of trails to get to the park so the fact that she learned it that fast was remarkable. Then after searching for her we'd come back home and there she was waiting at the front door looking guilty as sin. I miss that little trouble maker. Anyways, don't think they aren't smart because after owning one if you actually take care of them and give them lots of physical and mental exercise, they will be in their element. They're just really stubborn, that's classic husky though.
Top 3 for brains; Big french poodle[can never remember their name],German Shepard, and finally Collies. This was from several vets I asked when looking at getting a dog.I finally settled for a shepard/border collie cross and never regretted it.He saved me twice from being attacked by bears as I live in a small town in Canada where bears and deer in town are common. He never barked at the deer but when bears appeared he would lose it,barking savagely and chasing them off. He's been gone since 2007 and I still miss him.
Darn straight! The Belgian Malinois is amazing! They are used by military and law enforcement and from things I have seen and read, they have more stamina than German Shepherds and are every bit as intelligent. This list was f*cked. It seems all these lists are different depending on who posts them. Therefore invalid...
Carolyn Colebeck labs are a dumb smart. I have two. They have a very “dog” personality with very little wish to do anything but please. My husky is in between. My American Eskimo has what I call a “people” personality because he will listen, but he will make it clear he is not happy about it by taking his sweet time to do it or he will literally sigh in discontent for the command. He communicates what he wants incredibly well through body language. I think that shows some basic ability for him to think for himself, giving the dog a little more individuality to the dog
This list is so not true, belgian sheep dog are nr 1 and weimaraners are nr 2 most intelligent dogs. And many of the dogs on this list are not very smart.
A whippet was by far the smartest dog I ever owned (or had any dealings with). I've had two on this list, Cocker & Lab, neither very bright. Not only did he learn fast such as learning to sit, give a paw & stay within hours of settling into the family home at 12 weeks he also learned how to open doors (including his latched cage) on his own. He could find it's way home (including leading the way home off lead/leash to holiday homes returning to the car in new locations etc). He learnt lots of commands both speech & visual with the kids. The most impressive to me though was always how he would act with very young children. He liked to play rough with older kids (sharing a house with four teenagers) but was always so gentle & patient around toddlers. Unfortunately for us, he suffered from separation anxiety so when our situation changed & there wasn't somebody at home most of the time he became very stressed & he had to go to a home more suited for him.
According to most studies, the Border Collie, Doberman P, Poodie, and German Sheppard are always in top 4. So I say this list is slightly off with the Golden in there.
Goldens are in the list because they are 'trainable'... not because they are smart... hard to train but very intelligent dogs like Jack Russell Terriers, Dalmatians, Dachshund aren't on the list.
I'm surprised the catahoula didn't land in the top 10. This is one of the Smartest dog breeds I've ever seen and have. I taught my catahoula Bella several things like, sit, lay, stay, down, up, left, right, wait. Those are basic things but I also taught her more advanced things like, how to attack on my cue and stop attacking on my cue. I taught her how to take down a person like a police dog fyi. Also I taught her non verbal hand commands. She listens and does what I command with no hesitation instantly. This breed is: energetic, playful, intelligent, stubborn, territorial, over protective, loving & affectionate, popular hunting dog especially for wild hogs because they are deceptively fast and strong and can climb trees better than most cats. They have an average lifespan of about 25 years so getting one is a life time commitment. My catahoula is turning 9 this Halloween and she is still energetic as a puppy and isn't showing signs of slowing down anytime soon. These dogs are NOT for the beginner level dog owner. They require a strong leader that can guide them and understands that patience is the key to overcoming their stubborn behaviors. They also require alot of time/dedication, exercise, and attention. The best way I learned to train this breed of dog is in stages. From the puppy stage make things a game like play time and practice the training. When they start growing out of the puppy stage start transitioning your training into tasks because they love to work. As they start growing into the adult stage just keep on training like routine clock work until it becomes second nature to them and they listen to you automatically.
I had a Cocker Spaniel once and he was dumb as a box of rocks (he was grown when I got him). OTOH, I have a Chihuahua (who is generally NOT known for "smarts"). This is the single smartest dog I have ever met. In my opinion, I think the smartness of a dog is really measured by the owner's love and patience.
True ,,this list is not correct .... Look here .husky and gsp among top 10 , The smartest dogs according to veterinarians ruclips.net/video/U0P8G_L1hQE/видео.html
when i was 5 a Labrador deffended me against a big Rottweiler, there was waaay to much difference in height and weight, but still, my friend was willing to give everything to save me :,) ( the rottweiler entered to my backyard where i was playing with my turtle lol)
I've had 3 rotties..they never ever tried to pick a fight with another dog..,,other dogs who barked or growled at them just received a look like "you're an idiot" and nothing ever happened..the other dogs never really tried to do anything
I was adopted by a sheltie /dachshund mix... I guess I was the kind of guy she was looking for. An extremely alert dog who understood English better than some people I knew. She was absolutely fearless (dachshund side) and was a wonderful watchdog and protective as well... I still miss her... thinking back she was the love of my life. I was lucky that for the 12 years that I had her I had my own business which meant that she could be with me ALL the time, I never had to leave her for 8 to 9 hrs a day which was important in building a strong relationship and understanding. We went everywhere... that dog traveled more than most people... I even took here golfing and fishing... two sports she seemed to enjoy as much as I did... oh and she loved fireworks... I think the 4th of July was her favorite holiday.
German shepherds should be first they are loyal, intelligent, strong, handsome, and are such a cute dog. And I don't understand how a poodle got 2nd.... Like how! Anyone else agree!?
That you don't know about the intelligence of poodles just shows you don't show up on any top 25 smart people list. I can see you're given to fall for stereotypes. Perhaps if you did a little reading, you'd be a little smarter -- or at least, not so inclined to throw out asinine statements. Here's the list in increments of 10: petrix.com/dogint/intelligence.html (Note above each group of 10 the criteria used to determine the breed's intelligence. You can find a little more info here where the author of the book "The Intelligence of Dogs" explains the 3 methods of assessing the breeds. petrix.com/dogint/)
Believe it or not, poodles are the dog of choice for one branch of the military's special forces. (There's a reason poodles are usually placed in the 'working dogs' group.) And one of the teams on the Ididalrod (?) dog sled race a few years back was made entirely of poodles. And they did quite well.
***** We dog lovers are so relieved to learn that. I would hate to see a poodle having to survive under your care. P.S. Your sentiments are quite strong. Have you done time for animal abuse?
The poodle is 1-3 on every list I've ever seen. My golden retriever/ poodle mix is supposed to be pretty smart but he tries playing with the fake light up Christmas decoration dog, can't figure out where squirrels "disappear" too, however he sits at every street corner or crosswalk without being told (obviously after a few tries) and after his deer chasings always finds us again so not bad. Great swimmer too and crazy energetic runs up to 6 miles non stop before swimming and chasing geese .. not that you have to be smart for that
"Bred in X country and further developed in Y country"..... uuuuh, sounds like talking about a product rather than an animal.... just what did they do? :|
My GSP has quite a considerable word recognizable vocab. Don't Know if he understands everything, but the other day we were in the garage and I said, " do you want to go in the boat? " He ran to the door and I let him out. He ran down to the dock and jumped into the boat. He loves boat rides. He an awesome dog. Great hunter too.
@@emspumpkin5086 I have two Cocker Spaniels they are stubborn around anyone except people they know. They hate kids, every kid but me. Besides that they are very sweet and I love them
Jack Russell Terrier was not included in Stanley Coren's book, because in 1994 the Russell Terrier was not registered as a standard breed by the AKC (inc. 2012), UKC (inc. 2009) or the FCI (inc. 2000.)
the smartest dog i ever knew was my first service dog. she trained herself to do things for me. she was a mix of a shar pei and jack russell terrier. she was amazing!!
Go ahead and hate me..a border collie showed up at our place; I named him Pretty Boy. We had other dogs, he quickly set out to be #1. Not fighting, just being Boss. My family talked me into taking him off. I chose a place with lots of Kid traffic, $$$, etc. A year later, he was back. This time I took him to the ASPCA. Wherever you are, Pretty Boy, I hope...
If you need a tougher Border Collie, get the Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog). It's a little tank. The difference in intelligence between the two breeds is marginal, despite what this list projects. Heelers are scary smart.
Border collies are amazing at judging things too. I was playing frisbee with my Border Collie Shilo and I threw the frisbee into the wind. Shilo instantly figured out which way the wind was blowing, ran in the opposite direction of where I threw the frisbee, sat down and waited.
Jack russell's deserve to be on this list..
you left out the Jack Russell, most lists have them in the top 5. you don't even mention them

Now to do the stupid breeds, lol.
My dad's Australian cattle dog tries to herd us when we come to visit.
No such thing as a stupid dog, only a stupid trainer.
Ben Warwick Yes, just as there really are degrees of intellectual ability in people, there really are degrees of intellectual ability in dogs.
Aww, I have an Australian cattle dog and it is definitely the smartest dog I have ever had. Really obedient, friendly, and fast learner.
Yes ACD should be first, only somebody that never owned one would say different...
The ACD is the smartest mostly because they have the most current work history, in there DNA. its really as simple as that.
I thought I would see Jack Russell terrier on the list.😢

Spot on own a border collie myself and the intelligence level of her is beyond belief.
I own a German shepherd. He learned to open doors by himself.. Now I don’t have any space lol!
Boxer is usually among the top rated... I also miss the Xoloitzquintle on this list, not very common breed but extremely intelligent.
I've only ever seen boxers on the "not so smart" list. And having had 4 boxers in my life, I have to admit that they are dumb as bricks when compared to actual smart dogs lol
wait what i dont see a boxer but i do see a rotwiller my boxer is pretty smart
Dingo's were used on Queensland heelers to make Australian cattle dogs
Even I they aren't on the list, I still love pitbulls
yeees! Was so hoping theyd make the list
peace lover its my favorite but U know the reputation, he just watched me and acted accordingly Miss him so much
Technically "pit bull" isn't a recognized breed in many official kennel clubs. You're most likely thinking about the American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull terrier, or the English Bull Terrier :)
sr ud find putbulls under most aggressive
+Bryan Villegas aggressive and protective are totally different
My buddy Midnight was a mix between an Australian cattle dog and a Border collie. He was the smartest dog I've ever seen. He was so sweet. Last year, on a cold night on January 20th, he was hit by a red truck. R.I.P, Midnight.
He was black with grey paws and a grey belly.

+Toxic Plays MC We had a beagle. Loving and sweet. Dumbest animal on 4 legs.
+Jean on the Road I read they were smart though xD
Toxic Plays MC Ours was not smart. Not at all. Very high energy, too. We finally had to give him back to my uncle in Kentucky, were he became an active member of a hunting pack. The only things that dog could do were follow a scent and run. Hunting and working breeds are not good unless you can give them the exercise they need, no matter how dumb they are.
Rhodesian Ridgeback should be on here. Smartest dog I've ever seen!
Super smart. Mine talked too.
My Norwegian Elkhound is so smart, when the sign says WET FLOOR, he does.

Awww. I don't know whether to think that's hilarious or adorable. Former border collie owner here.
Believe it or not, one of our neighbors has a collie that tries to herd our flock of guennie hens every time she gets bored. And if you've ever had guennies, you KNOW how next to impossible that is! Seriously, they don't give that dog enough to do!

Where is Siberian Husky?!!!!! Husky is one of the most intelligent dog breed !!!!
Bari Naiem very true. I had one that was a quarter wolf and that dog was ingenious. He’s watch us open doors and figure it out. Almost smart as our Doberman
Actually thats untrue. they are loyal but they are difficult to train and arent very obediant without lots of excessive training.
Amen brother I own two and its upsetting that they didn't make the list.

No Jack Russell? Ridiculous
Their temperament is not high up on a list so they get knocked off the list. They are super intelligent but not as sociable as these on the list.

"The Irish Water Spaniel is native to Ireland"....
No shit!

So it's NOT just a clever name!

Every cocker spaniel I've ever known was a neurotic box of rocks. Certainly not smart.
