Great playing, great games. Tempest, Gravitar, Asteroids Deluxe, Space Duel Star Wars and Battle Zone are simply amazing skill games. This is the golden era of video games and these vector titles are the cream of the crop. I've played them all to death. Thanks for sharing, enjoyed this.
If you can imagine: this ship looks similar to the Defiant class in the Star Trek series; right down to defensive shields and Borg Cube appearing on the battlefield.
Not sure I'm qualified to give you advice, since you're obviously very good, and better than than I ever was with your shield-use, I think, but I'd say that, in my opinion, when there's not a lot of big rocks to break up & cause total chaos, it can't really hurt to fire a bit more, randomly, in between your well-aimed shots, since you never run out of ammo, and there's always a chance of landing some lucky shots that will help you clear the board faster. Also, since you fire so fast & have good reflexes, and seem to stay calm under pressure, it seems like you would be quite good at Wizard of Wor -- a game that was a blast, & where you could have a buddy play with you at the same time, working as a team, as well, if you wanted, but which, like Asteroids Deluxe, gets harder the longer you go, & shows you no mercy, and has situations where firing like maniac is a useful skill. The standout feature with Wizard was that the machine talked to you. 🙂
Anyone have this in the Legends Ultimate cabinet? It's much harder. You start with only two lives in reserve, you can't fire as quickly, the scoring is different (there's no way you'll get to 10k in the first round) and the UFOs sometimes shoot you dead within a second of coming onscreen, so you cannot react.
The original default settings for this game were to only have 3 lives - I changed it to 5 so i could get more practice at higher levels :) The original settings were also quite difficult - what you're seeing in this video is the second rom-set that was released that made the game slightly easier. I've changed my machine to hard settings with 3 lives now - I usually get to about 40k or so before I lose my first ship - (i don't play as much as i used to) - If i practice, I can usually break 100k .. but after that it's an endurance test. (The game difficulty maxes out at around 115k) There are many players better than me - and if you check around on YT, you can probably find someone who can get over 1,000,000 points! Some people are just really good at this game! My most hated enemy are the little saucers - they're the ones who cause me to most difficulty. :)
@@Groome007 It's not just scoring. You can fire much more rapidly and "spray" bullets to kill the enemy pods as they erupt. The UFOs are also more benign. In the Legends Ultimate version, no matter how skilled you are, you WILL DIE from UFO attacks because they will sometimes shoot you dead within a second of showing up.
@@toyotahontas9296 same thing happens on my machine at high levels.. they spawn, immediately fire from the other side, shot wraps around and bullseyes you ..
Yes you are. :) The original arcade version used vector graphics - just like you see here. There was another game that came out later called "Space Duel" that was similar ... It had different shapes (each with different colors) but similar gameplay. Much later on there was 'Blasteroids' which employed more typical raster graphics. :)
Thanks! I've actually improved a bit since then .. I play on tournament settings now (hard, 3 ships) my top score is just over 126,000 ... I don't think i really have time to devote to getting much further than that - the difficulty is maxxed out and it becomes a huge endurance run. :)
@@Groome007 Yes you could play for hours on the same lives with the strategy of just breaking up 1 big rock at once hence less small ones but then the challenge is not as great, saw one guy playing this way in Skegness in 1982,on the first version asteroids,he clocked the game twice and had all his rockets lined up at the top, must have been about 20 as you know 1 extra life per 10,000 points
@@neilbarlow6816 That strategy is tough to pull off on Asteroids Deluxe - The little saucer has improved aim - and he often spawns on one side, and shoots a wrap-around shot to catch you off guard - also, the little arrow guys who chase you continue to appear (unless there's 2 or less asteroids left) ... and they won't let you sit still at ALL. Even if you manage to get just 1 or 2 asteroids left, the little saucer will usually shoot them - forcing you to start again, and face the little arrow guys again. :)
Stellar shield use & aim -- and good thruster use too. I could play forever on Asteroids, but like you say, this is so much harder... Your quarters could disappear quick!
There are some dip-switch settings that you can adjust. At the time I made this video, i had it set to start games on 'easy' and with 5 ships. Since then I have reverted to 'hard' (tournament mode) with the default of 3 ships. :)
@@Groome007 If you can set the difficulty, then you have V2 roms......V1 rom set is actually harder/meaner than V2 set on "hard"....I have a set of the V2 roms, thinking of putting them in just to make the game more friendly for casual players.. Great score!

Good game. Love the sound of Asteroids Deluxe.
Such an amazing game, especially the cab itself. No emulation comes close unfortunately.

I have got to get me an Asteroids Deluxe!!!

Great player knows how to thrust and hyperspace just short of 100k
