I've been restoring & fixing my own vehicles for 40 years. I can't believe how well your fabrication skills have come along so far so quickly. I take my hat off to you Neil. I hope you are helping out your girl out as much as she is you. :D.
Wow, thanks Tony, that's quite a compliment! Amazing what you can do with a hammer, couple of g clamps, and a bit wood haha. Yip I've got a good 1 there. She puts up with me!
Been 2yrs since this post just like to say great seeing people doing there own restoration. Instead of someone paying fortune for a perfect van then saying yeh Look at mine , ive only spent £12000 and sat on drive. Use mine daily great van 3 and half years still chasing rust😂
Hi Peter, Sorry for slow reply, I'm a bit upside down at the moment. .. cheers mate! I appreciate the message. If I had 12 grand it definitely would not be getting used on a rusty t4 haha. Built not bought! 👍
I take my hat off to you Neil. My T4 is rusty, but no where near as bad as yours, although having said that, I bet if I was to have a proper dig about it would uncover all sorts of hidden “gems” Is there a particular reason why you’re spending so much time and money on the van, instead of just buying something in a bit better condition? How much do you think it would be worth once finished, are these vans going to be like the T2 value wise or something?
Cheers Matt. Tbh I didn't set out to restore the van. I bought it spur of the moment from a work colleague. All I thought I had to do was kit the back out into a camper and we'd be off on our jollies. After taking the first few panels off to insulate I realised I'd bought a rust bucket. The previous owner did a really good job of covering it up. Underseal and cataloy everywhere. Needless to say it's caused a bit of tension at work. So I was either scrap it and loose everything. Or fix it up. I've no bodywork or welding experience prior but I'm a fairly hands on guy so thought why not. I haven't spent a great deal on the van repair so far. I've had a donor van nearby that I can source body cuts from cheaply or swap for labour at my own trade. Repair panels aren't too expensive. And as I'm just plodding along at it the rate I'm buying them is fairly spread out. It's become my hobby and I'm learning a new skill the whole time. Again in my naivety I think it will just be a case of swapping panels... then I find more rust behind them and the saga continues. I'll have a nearly new van by the end!. price, who knows? With covid camper prices are silly at the moment. The T4 already has its own 'scene tax' which I'm sure your aware of. I notice the price of parts has gone up
@@neil... LOL. I did exactly the same thing, I bought my van from my former work boss, total impulse buy. The more I dug about, the more problems I found. I’ve got it through an MOT by patching it up but I dare not look too hard for more rust as there’s plenty of under seal etc. Got to say though, after all’s said and done, it’s a great camper/ day van and we I love it.
We got out in ours 3 times before things went south. Loved every minute. There's a good forum with like minded T4 enthusiasts. Check out.. Just t4s. I'm on it under Fife t4
