This was fun, nostalgic and sad all at once. Shedding tears in a good way, sending love from Toronto, Canada. Back in the day, we depended on NY for our hiphop. Boy, how things have changed. De la Soul - Breaka Dawn, NWA - Express Yourself and Rob Base - It takes 2, might be the first hip hop songs I ever listened to.
@oldmanebro .. at the end you're talking about passing it to your kids .... Last september I flew myself and my two teenagers from Amsterdam to Newark to watch the gods Nas/WuTang/Busta perform live at the Prudential Center. Best thing I ever did as a parent
I was like Ebro this made me teary eyed. And my grandson was dancing. Thanks guys this was the best! Rosenberg do we always have to do the American thing? It wasn’t just an American story from Slick Rick. That story is a cautionary tale in many places even London. And I believe he had been living in NY since 1977. That song was released in 1989.
Awesome video. When everyone collectively spoke different lyrics from Children's Story over Slick Rick's lines while the song was playing, it made my day. Also, when everybody said the song lyrics "WHY'D YOU HIT ME?" all at once at 30:32, I lost it.
How do you miss Big Daddy Kane "Ain't No Half Steppin" in an era where the closest person to Kane was of course Rakim? That song held '88 hostage all over the radio!
This is such a tough era to choose from... All the songs chosen were dope HOWEVER, no Public Enemy, NWA, Big Daddy Kane, BDP, EPMD, Beastie Boys, and so many more... Super tough!
Children’s story might be a Top 10, MAYBE even Top 5 song on the list. It was the first hip-hop song I memorized. I was like 8, 9 years old boppin’ around the house to it. 💪🏾
Too many classics from that era. To me the golden age of Rap/Hip Hop was 1984-89. So fortunate I grew up around that era that became the soundtrack of my High School/early college years. Thanks for taking me back Hot 97.
I say 90-99 was the second generation of hip hop had their golden era when new superstars like Tribe, Snoop, solo records from Ice Cube & Dre, 2Pac, Wu-Tang, Nas, Jay, Biggie, Busta & others cats kept Rap big machine going.
Love this list. My favorite segment of the Top 50 so far. BUT, that East Coast slant had y’all leave Straight Outta Compton off these 10. I’d take Slow Down off for that.
Slick Rick Children’s story is one of my top 5 favorite rap songs ever was excited to see that picked! Surprised no NWA selections … was expecting F*ck the police !!
Only thing I can say is that I agree with Rosenberg and Ebro, I used to like Joy and Pain better than It Takes Two,which had much more impact as a crossover dance hit so I understand. Otherwise, these picks are stellar! Great job peeps!!!! Oh yeah Laura killed with Slow Down, being from ENY Brooklyn with The GODS, that song hit different back in the day.
I was born in '82, born and raised I the south, so I got of these songs were major parts of my introduction to rap. I Gotta say that all songs are great but Rosenberg hit it out Park today!!!!
My introduction to hip hop was run dmc walk this way. Early 1993. Cable just became available. I couldn't believe how many music channels available on a remote.
Bonita Applebum is great but there's at ;least 5 other Tribe songs from that era I'd pick first. Electric Relaxation, Award Tour, both versions of Scenario and Can I Kick It are all more iconic to me.
Yo, s/o to Hot97…I’m from Indiana and in my mid 40s. This has brought back so many memories for me. When that Bonita Applebum came on…OMG! So many great songs! Wow! I voted too. I still remember being a little shorty and seeing L L Cool J for the first time and was gone off him. For a brief minute I wanted to be just like him, then I realized I couldn’t rap. 😂😂😂 He will always be in my top 5 though. Speaking of which, I laced me and my entire crew with Hip Hop Top 5 Hoodies for Christmas. They told me their Top 5s and I had the hoodies made. They are dope!✌🏾
I was gonna say they should make a Spotify playlists of all the nominations and then final 50, but I’m gonna guess Apple Music would be the place to get that, if they do the list.
Soooooo, there were no songs outside of NY that was banging???? How about Too Short(Freaky tales) or Geto boyz(Mind of a Lunatic) or anything from Ice Cube….. ijs
@ebro why no N.W.A or Above the law...No Fila excursions ....Come on Hot 97...Play all the music from around the world in hip hop from around the world 🌎
If you don't know Top Billin bar for bar you aint hip hop...btw I don't know how you pick between any of there. But that dude Shani absolutely killed his two picks.
segments like these is why hot 97 is so dope
Been loving these list videos, its a jam session💯
What a wonderful time! Thank you Hot 97!! ❤❤❤

I'm from the Toronto too
Sad about what? Y'all too soft in Canada
whew…yall brought back high school vibes for me ‘88-‘92.
87-91 ❤
Loved every second of this. Each one of you hit your picks out of the park. Hip hop forever.
This video could have going on for 6 hours and I’d have been happy. Best one yet.
Every song a classic, brought back great memories
Just like Ebro said....these songs makes me emotional
Please do more of these videos! 🙏🏾👍🏾💕
I never listen to 80s rap but forget how many of these still go hardddd AF
I almost shed a tear listening to this
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'm 36 from Louisiana and I know all these songs by heart and love them all
Man I love this show. They are truly hip-hop heads.
Damn I remember growing up in the 90s and it takes 2 still hits the same in 2023
Love y'all! Been enjoying this so much ❤️
I’m about to be 35 and knew every song! Shout out to my mom!!!

Another good double A Side is Eric B Is President/My Melody

Yup. "Love's Gonna Getcha" is one of the best.
"Ain't No Half Steppin", "Warm It Up Kane", "So Whatchu Sayin", "The Crossover", "Paul Revere"...Still too many...
I think about “Around the Way Girl” everyday. No 🧢
Slick Rick children’s story def top 50
Children’s story might be a Top 10, MAYBE even Top 5 song on the list. It was the first hip-hop song I memorized. I was like 8, 9 years old boppin’ around the house to it. 💪🏾
@@mister_bailey same! First song ever committed to memory
Love these videos!!! Best crew in NYC . And if you the best here you the best all over the 🌏!!!

The 80s just got soooooo many all time top 50 songs
Slick Rick Children’s story is one of my top 5 favorite rap songs ever was excited to see that picked! Surprised no NWA selections … was expecting F*ck the police !!
That is why they fail. How you gonna leave out Straight Outta Compton. I mean come on now...
No NWA they hell for that
Loving this segment.
the background singers on "Around The Way Girl" was a group called The Flex.they were discovered by marley marl.
I like the list, but no NWA?!?!?
Yea, they trippin
watching this felt like a day in class of Hip Hop , cant wait to put my nephews and nieces on to the real

They said they liked it AS MUCH AS, not More, but I got you. ;)
this was my teenage years-omg!!!!! Im biased but the period of 1985 to 1992 was the best time for hip hop.
This was so fun y’all
YALL KILLED THAT 86-90 RUN 🔥🔥🔥🔥 THE BEST SO FAR💯💯💯 ALL THOSE RECORDS MAKE IT 🤷🏿♂️
The good ole dayz! 💯🔥
I was born in '82, born and raised I the south, so I got of these songs were major parts of my introduction to rap. I Gotta say that all songs are great but Rosenberg hit it out Park today!!!!
I love how they add their own Adlibs in the songs lol
My introduction to hip hop was run dmc walk this way. Early 1993. Cable just became available. I couldn't believe how many music channels available on a remote.
Public Enemy-Rebel Without A Pause.. Kool G Rap-Road To The Riches..
Whats crazy Ebro kept it all in New york..Which was crazy.. We know the music that was out in 80's on the west coast and east coast
No NWA or Ice T was real suspect of them
Absolutely best performance ever seen - De La at Jones Beach Rock the Bells, 2007.
Bonita Applebum is great but there's at ;least 5 other Tribe songs from that era I'd pick first. Electric Relaxation, Award Tour, both versions of Scenario and Can I Kick It are all more iconic to me.
It was from 86' to '90. Those songs...except Can I Kick It...were after this time period
So many songs missing! I know it's hard to list them all, but a few classics are surprisingly missing 😕
Please turn into a playlist once completed
Top Billin is the best song of this group
Yo, s/o to Hot97…I’m from Indiana and in my mid 40s. This has brought back so many memories for me. When that Bonita Applebum came on…OMG! So many great songs! Wow! I voted too. Children’s Story is already wayyyy ahead on the website. Btw, next time y’all do 1986-1990, I gotta hear Special Ed I Got It Made
Cmon Rosenberg! Marley told you who sang on Around the Way Girl on the og Juan Ep. “The Flex” was the group. Dave Hollister and I forgot who else
NWA is arguably the most influential group of all time and they couldn’t get 1 song?
This time period might be the toughest. Salt n Pepa PUSH IT, Special Ed The Mission, etc
1986-1993 = My era!
👴🏽👴🏽👴🏽👴🏽
All these records are Top 50 caliber…this was just great era of hip hop…WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE
Can’t wait til y’all get to the 2000s and the 2010s
All fire!
I love it! only NYC mattered in this era
🧢
Rosenberg you talked about the Around the way singer on your Juan Ep w/ Marley Marl
Nice picks but what happened to Big Daddy Kane Ain't No Half Steppin and KRS 1 South Bronx!!!!!!!!
What about the "Stop schemin, and lookin hard" sample on Dre's "Bitch N****z" 🔥🔥🔥
We back!! I'm back for part 2!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Bonita Applebum the best pick of the round 4sure
That Slick Rick though!
I was gonna say they should make a Spotify playlists of all the nominations and then final 50, but I’m gonna guess Apple Music would be the place to get that, if they do the list.
Soooooo, there were no songs outside of NY that was banging???? How about Too Short(Freaky tales) or Geto boyz(Mind of a Lunatic) or anything from Ice Cube….. ijs
I discovered 'My Adidas' playing a TonyHawk game
Won't Hip Hop do it 🙌
What a way to start as soon as I hear 3 seconds I was on it #gobrooklyn
AUGUST 11TH MY BIRTHDAY TOO!
August 11th My Birthday!!!
Damn...I think Slick Rick's Children's Story and LL's 'round the way girl need to win this, but this list is hard (pause)
38:13 that part 💯
Clearly New Yorks best 50 songs
idk how you pick of I ruled the world and triumph. outta the whole late 90s? those records wouldn't even have crossed my mind
1985 - 1997 was the golden era of rap
That nike outfit, in the rob base video, I wanted that fit bad ..Could never fund it...
golden era of hip hop
PR's first song was insane!!!!!!!!!!!!
My Adidas was and is a classic! People now taking about checks over stripes? Y'all forget where hip hop started.
WE ARE SO EXCELLENT, 💥 BLACK EXCELLENCE ✊🏿❤ and “THEY” said it wouldn’t in my DJ Khaled voice “GOD did” 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
No self destruction?
@ebro why no N.W.A or Above the law...No Fila excursions ....Come on Hot 97...Play all the music from around the world in hip hop from around the world 🌎
No public enemy ? 😱😱
🔥🔥🔥
NO N.W.A?!?!?!
East coast biased mfs 😤
@@AlexJmz94 and I'm from NY lol but I know the impact NWA made...the fact they didn't get a mention
Get Ebro out🗣️🗣️
De La Soul - Say No Go
I think yall missed Slick Rick & Doug E. Fresh The Show
The Show was a year prior - in '85
I think that came out in 85
The Show came out in 1985.
I mean, I get it. New York biased, but even the first rapping was done before 73 by the likes of rudy ray more and gil Scott Heron
No straight of Compton.?
God is good God is the greatest
So Salt N Pepa wasn't ground breaking in the 80's? I guess they didn't fit the criteria for this list 🤷🏽♀
Roxanne Shante is on her way to the station right now
The lox never broke up or have a funny style period
Sure didn't but they have solo albums. He said never broke up or have solos projects.
If you don't know Top Billin bar for bar you aint hip hop...btw I don't know how you pick between any of there. But that dude Shani absolutely killed his two picks.
I don't think the pick straight outta compton cause I guess that's the easiest choice
No NWA though?
Definitely east coast bias on this one lol
Disappointed that there was no NWA at all Straight Outta Compton and Boyz n the Hood are better than I wanna Rock and Just a Friend
So my adidas wasn't gimmicky
Definitely was…
