When John started to do his speech again when finding the Shiny Genesect, I was expecting Mikey to find a shiny and catch it before John threw his Master Ball.
I like Chikorita's line, (aesthetically I probably prefer it to Totodile, even though Totodile is still great) it's just that grass types in general are not set up for sucess in Jhoto. There's not a single gym or elite four battle until post game where grass is super effective. Send it to just about any other reason and I believe it could thrive, it just lives in a hostile environment.

In my opinion, the whole Chikorita line is just disappointing. Chikorita, explains itself. I can't even remember the names of it's evolution, and I normally remember every starter! Tododile and Cyndaquil are amazing Pokémon, though I feel the mid evo of both of those lines aren't all that good.
@@luckyloke5971 Bayleef and Meganium. I actually like Bayleef best out of the set, which is odd, because as you pointed out, middle evolutions are usually underwhelming. You're welcome to your (popular) opinion, I will still disagree. My fondness for these Pokémon probably comes way more from the anime (Ash's, Casey's) and the manga (Crystal's) than any experience I've had with them in the games. I never tried to use it for quite a while (Cyndaquil is my all time favorite, so it's hard not to pick it every time) but I did do a Chikorita run for sake of dex completion, and I struggled with it like anyone does. I accepted for a while that as much as I like Chikorita, Chikorita is bad. Then I got to the postgame and my Meganium performed really well in Kanto. That shifted my perspective. Chikorita is not a bad grass type, grass types are bad in Jhoto. Now I know a Pokémon being "good" comes down to more than bst (stat spread, access to moves that utilize its best stat, compatible ability) but bst is still a good baseline for roughly comparisons, and Chikorita stacks up pretty well against the other starters. With a bst of 318 Chikorita starts off higher than both Totodile (314) and Cyndaquil (309). Compared to grass starters from other regions it is in a three way tie for second place with Bulbasaur and Turtwig, only definitely behind Rowlet (320), and ahead of Chespin (313), Treeko (310), Grookey (310), and Snivy (308). Bulbasaur is often considered the best Kanto starter, but it's not exactly 1-to-1 on account of being a duel type so I'll pass by it and go to gen 3. Treeko is definitely less popular than Mudkip, but it still seems reasonably well loved and does an adequate job in its region. Seems like a fair comparison for Chikorita. I've never gotten around to doing this test, but I'm pretty sure that if a Hoenn game were edited to start with Chikorita, and a Johto game to start with Treeko, it would be the Treeko struggling more due to being a grass type in Jhoto.
