This is the best version period. The children listen and clap their hands. Your voice, the guitar and banjo creates a feeling of romantic adventure on the seven seas.
A Very haunting rendition true to its roots. You must fetch up in Falmouth for our sea shanty festival every year in june it also coincides with the classic boat festival. We will have you aboard our pilot cutter Marguerite as long as you sing the Wellerman.!! Best wishes the Brunyee family.
Thank you for your feedback and invitation. I would LOVE to get to the Sea Shanty Festival some year... Singing The Wellerman on board the Marguerite is going on the bucket list... 😀
That must have been a hell of a life. Leaving home for years to hunt the grounds off the coast of Peru and Chile. No idea when you'd be going home again, bad food, hard punishment, poor hygiene. I know that the Wellermen were sailors who worked for the Weller Brothers, a whaling company in the 1830's. The company supply ship was named the Wellerman, and it would provision the hunting ships at sea. But I don't know how authentic this song is, it seems to have popped up out of nowhere from TikTok and the Longest Johns. Anyways, the opportunity for harmonizing the chorus is wonderful.
Gordon Bok, Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett featured the song on their album 'And so Will We Yet' released in 1990. This is the version I first heard and loved it. It went viral through Tik Tok, via the more acapella shanty version. My effort is heavily influenced by Bok, Mayo Muir and Trickett's version, which remains my favourite... Thanks for getting in touch - RP
@@rpgunn I read the wicki on the Weller Brothers, and this song playing in the background really fit their life. It was a hard like in New Zealand back then and they were the movers and shakers. Thanks for the info, I'll look up the version you mention.
The best version there will ever be. I first heard this version and thought that this was very old song and only version. Then I unfortunately found these TikTok silly dances and challenges with some other versions.
One of the best version i heard! Thank you for sharing. Édit: when post my original comment the account of views were just around 250 that was unfair. 9 month later you get 101 K ! Congratulation it is deserved
This is BEAUTIFUL! So haunting, I could listen forever, I'll be using this to write my novels to for certain :) I love the instrumentals and the vocals are just incredible.
Excellent version of this now famous shanty. Sounds like you are playing a range of string instruments, possibly including a lute? Lovely string harmonies and your voice blends superb too. It's definitely up there with your version of The Leaving of Liverpool which I love to bits as you know. Thank you very much.
Thank you ZAN! Guitar, mandolin and base are the only instruments I used. I'm delighted you are enjoying both this and The Leaving of Liverpool. They are amongst my own favourite songs...
Since I live in Easthampton I have visit the Montague Book Mill at times and I remember when they did live music there on Saturday nights even before the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic. I think The Book Mill is one of the best bookstores in Western Massachusetts!!!
Could you post an instrumental version? I absolutely love the arrangement with the mandolin and the guitar... how you start with the guitar, and then the mandolin comes in sharp as a harpoon, and finally the base is very emotional.
This is the only version I have recorded at present... I may get around to putting together an instrumental at some point, but won't be any time soon... Sorry 🤷🙂
Thanks for your comment Night:) I just want to say, that I'm blown away by the reaction to The Wellerman... I recorded the song myself and feel it's not of a high enough quality to post on a platform like Spotify. I am always looking to improve the standard of my music and I hope a time will come when the songs are at a point whereby I am happy to move to the next level... Kind Regards RP
The song is great. The. Person who wrote the swords on the captions misspelled so many words! The song talks about the Wellerman. ( he says the weatherman). Song says ship is Billy of Tea (he says acquitte) several others words misspelled. I just wish people who make programs and ads are aware that the caption person suits the topic. It helps the viewer understand the production much better.
I had never watched it with the captions until I read your message. Not sure how the captions are generated. I'm thinking it must be a software programme...🤷 Thanks for your comment, glad you like the song - RP
I first heard this song being sung by Gordan Bok, Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett some years back without knowing there was a shanty version. Their version is on an album they released in 1990. The shanty style would be much older, but I just love the melody and pace of the ballad... RP
Not quite sure what you are asking specifically, so I am replying in a way that I hope covers various options. I recorded this version early 2022. My understanding is that the original shanty is much older, and that it was revived in the 60s/70s. The version on which I based my recording is by Gordon Bok, Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett (RIP). That was featured on their 1990 album 'And So Will We Yet'. That version is (in my opinion) the best and it's my favourite... Hope I've answered your question. Thanks for getting in touch - RP 😊 🎶

Donne un côté plus rétrograde, plus 19ème siècle et le rythme est moins rapide.
