I’m Johanna Rothman, and this is Johanna’s Writing WIP for June 14, 2024, where I read an excerpt of just a minute of some writing in progress.
This is from the Effective Public Speaking book.
Remember What You Like About Public Speaking
Think back to the last time you had an authentic conversation with someone about your expertise. Maybe it was a meeting where you wanted to discuss an important topic to come to a decision. I'm sure you did not memorize your topic. You certainly did not yell at the other person so they could hear you.
Instead, you might have jotted down some points you wanted to remember, starting with the context so everyone knew why they were there. Or, if the conversation was in a meeting, you may have created an agenda with those main points. You didn't have to memorize anything. And if someone interrupted you with a question, you had your notes to remind you of the next thing you wanted to say.
Maybe you created a slide deck, but with any luck, you didn't write down everything you planned to say. You only included the highlights.
Inside organizations, people often discuss an issue that requires more than one perspective. You probably set the context, offered some information, and then asked them to speak--or vice versa. That created a useful conversation. Even better, you could be yourself and talk.
