PSA from an old skater It's all about persistence. Even if you feel like you're not getting better, go out and skate around. Be on your board. Find anything you can skate or make up tricks. Film, edit have fun
I just wanted to say I’ve been watching you for several months, but over the past two months, I’ve watched so many of your videos. They give me a temporary break from the reality of chronic illnesses keeping me primarily bedridden. I’ve always wanted to skate again. I was never able to do any tricks, but of course I could at least ride a board down our street-but who didn’t, who was a teen in the early 00s? I’ll probably never be able to again, but your videos still give me hope that no matter what, I’ll find a way to do it, even if just cruising on a longboard, once, slowly. Keep at it, you’re one of, if not THE best, skateboarding channels out there, imo. Thanks for all the smiles! I love how you talked about it being a mindset. So true.
Ive only been skating for 3 days but was pushing awkward for everyone else when they were just starting out? I feel nervous every time i put my back foot on the board
100%, i pushed mongo for a month, so once I started trying to push regular it was literally starting over again, and I couldn't even push down the sidewalk without going off the side.
BOB WILLIAMS nah man your good just roll slow and put your back foot on. Make sure to keep your balance and commit. Dont try any tricks until you can roll.
I recommend using your front foot and just push in little bursts. Then when you get used to that, put your back foot on. Learn kick turning (you won't fall. It's about the safest thing you can do and if you do fall, it won't hurt) I always kept my front foot straight, then once I learned how to push I turned it sideways whenever I was cruising. But yeah I would do baby pushes and never put my foot on, then I started to after a couple days. Trust me, once you get at least a year in, that feeling of unease goes away. And remember, try to eventually develop a "pro push". Basically do those pushes you see any pro Skater does. It feels great once you learn those👍
Loved this one! It would be cool to see a video from you on how to overcome the fear of trying something new! I find myself getting scared of trying new tricks, or when there's a handrail or something I have skated in a while, I'm always scared to do it.
Agree with all the 6! One thing that helped and still helps me at 46yo is to Ollie everything everywhere. For me it's the best of the warm up and it also prepares my balance for the rest of the session.
I'm new to skating (well, relearning for the first time in many many years) and wanted to say thanks for all these super helpful videos. As a side note, I love how you time your skating segments with the backing music
What you said about not burning yourself out is the most true, when you get tired and stop landing things and start getting frustrated is when skateboarding can become more of a task rather than something you would do for fun, iv stopped skating for weeks at a time for this exact reason
Jake Tompkins I broke my wrist on my first week of skating. Shit happens, but most important, don’t give up. Piece of advice, let hour wrist heal and do your exercises so you can gain your strength and flex back. Also it wouldn’t hurt to rock a wrist guard on your injured wrist for a while. Best of luck and keep shredding!
Yo even though I ride a scooter mainly but when I'm at my local I always go on my mates skateboards n I enjoy riding them, this video has helped me, keep it up man
I have the same deck in the thumbnail, your a really good skater man I hope I could be good one day. I feel like I break my ribs out here trying this and never get better but I still love to skate.
The burnout stage stuff was actually very true I’m learning fs 180s and I went 2 hours straight the other day and I stopped after I got close to it and I realized my legs could barely move, shit hurts
just keep skating it will get more comfortable im pretty new too i can ollie fs180 but thats the best beginner tip i can give u. try n do things like kickturns to get more comfortable idk good luck tho
i was skating on and off for a couple years. Recently i’ve been skating everyday for 2 months straight and i’m stuck on fs 180s and i’m getting extremely frustrated. Especially seeing everyone else’s progress on their board. Never gonna quit though not gonna any better doing that.
Can you give me good luck? I've been trying to learn to ollie for 2 years. I now can practice Ollie's rolling, still having a little issue of sliding and pushing out. I'm definitely as close as I've ever been. I had to return 2 shoes cuz I somehow blew out the DC T Funks and Van's Berle pros on two separate 3 hour sessions.
CY OM I learned one in one day main thing for me was sliding my foot. I practiced just doing the Ollie motion and focused on slide by taking my back foot off and that helped a lot.
I am starting to do the rail thing but is it good to learn tricks/practice down hill? I tried it and I feel like it is slightly better as it forces u to move so u get used to it however it sometimes went uneasy 😦
So for create a list, if I can only like 50-50 sometimes, kickflip sometimes, Ollie, shuv, pop shuv. How do I create a list of things that i may not be able to do if those are the only things I can do?
Boardslide Popshuv an obstacle like a curb Get cleaner kickflips Learn stupid stuff that you can pull in a game of skate like ollie sex change or weird stuff Get cleaner kickflips Go outside, get into streets, get kicked out of places, make friends, find new spots, enjoy skating.

Thanks
Word up.
I just recently got into filming myself so that I could re-watch myself and see what I think I'm doing wrong when I'm riding around
Josh Simmons I will try and do that! Thanks!
Hahaha six fingers in the thumbnail for the six tips
Good eyes bro hahaha
I didn’t even see that at first lol

Just go with the flow and dont be scared to fall. In a couple months it will feel natural like riding a bike
Love this audio sync up you're doin with the music and tricks
Keep up the good work John. The style of these videos give me memories of my childhood when I skated everyday for nearly 6 years. Love the vids

You should do a video of u doing bowl I know ur street but it be a cool video
I really needed tip 4 thanks
Step 1: Don't break your wrist and not be able to skate for 6 weeks.
I failed, but hopefully ill be back on the board in the next couple weeks!
Try and just push around a bit so you don’t lose all your muscle memory
Andrea Herrera for sure dude! And thanks for the advice. I will be using a wrist guard and have no shame, because I wear a helmet usually.
Andrea Herrera I’ve been skating for almost 4 years I don’t really think I’ll lose my muscle memory of how to push but I appreciate your concern
Thank
Yo even though I ride a scooter mainly but when I'm at my local I always go on my mates skateboards n I enjoy riding them, this video has helped me, keep it up man

Something simple that has really helped with my progression is stretching before each sesh.
3:40 Amen brother. So rare to see this mentioned. Work with your biology, not against it.

i need advice on the post "foot slide" of the ollie
Also thx I needed this
Hey I've been subscribed for a while now. But I just realized in another vid you were selling shirts and stickers.
Can you give me good luck? I've been trying to learn to ollie for 2 years. I now can practice Ollie's rolling, still having a little issue of sliding and pushing out. Its been 10 months have you got it??
just a quick question, what does skating ´´transition´´ mean??
Did you ever find out
I am starting to do the rail thing but is it good to learn tricks/practice down hill? I tried it and I feel like it is slightly better as it forces u to move so u get used to it however it sometimes went uneasy 😦
Ay I got a primitive ad. Sick
I have a list that is limited and I do what ever I need to work on and not a specific order, if that works
on the icon at 2:15 i feel like john wouldnt want to wrestle naked and jagers the one who came up with that idea
Love you :)
😎
So for create a list, if I can only like 50-50 sometimes, kickflip sometimes, Ollie, shuv, pop shuv. How do I create a list of things that i may not be able to do if those are the only things I can do?
