  • Our first time in Gdansk, Poland!
Gdansk is a port city on the Baltic coast of Poland.
At the centre of its Main Town, reconstructed after WWII, are the beautiful facades of Long Market, now home to shops and restaurants.
Neptune Fountain, a 17th-century symbol of the city, is topped by a bronze statue of the sea god.
Gdansk is also a centre for the world’s amber trade!
    Let's explore Gdansk, Poland together.

Gdańsk is the one of the most important cities not only for Poland but for whole Europe as well. Once Gdańsk was the biggest and most rich city in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the WW II started here, and the Solidarity movement was born. Add to it the world amber capital and birthplace of many famous people like Fahrenheit whose temperature scale is used to this day in English speaking countries.

Apparently, there are ideas to build glass skyscrapers in Gdańsk somewhere near this historic old town. What do you think, is it a good idea for Gdańsk to build a lot of skyscrapers, such as Warsaw? As tourists do you think - should Gdańsk change into a city like New York or something similar?

.....Two opposing paths of expansion also intersected here: the constant drive of the Polish state to the north and the German pressure to the east. The clash of these two forces influenced the fate of the city for many centuries. In the 11th century, the settlement, and with it the entire region, belonged to the Kingdom of Poland, and then - for over two hundred years - it was under the rule of East Pomeranian dukes, who at the end of the 13th century ceded their domain to the rulers of Poland, Przemysł II and finally Władysław The elbow. In 1308, Gdańsk was armed by the Teutonic Knights, who ruled until 1456, when Royal Prussia, and with them Gdańsk, were - for over three centuries - within the borders of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Lost to Prussia in 1793. In the years 1807-1814 and 1920-1939, Gdańsk was a Free City. In 1945 - by the decision of the great powers during the Potsdam conference (and previously a unilateral decision of the authorities of the Soviet Union) - it was re-granted to Poland....

The difficult and complicated recent history of Gdańsk was immortalized in the book Tin drum - Gunter Grass (there is also a film from the 1970s). Up-to-date book. The Russian army has not changed for decades. The events in Ukraine confirm this. St. Mary's Basilica in Gdańsk is the largest red brick church in the world. A bar mleczny (literally translated as "milk bar" from Polish) is a Polish cafeteria. The first milk bar, called "Mleczarnia Nadświdrzańska," was established in 1896 in Warsaw by Stanisław Dłużewski, a member of the Polish landed gentry. Although the typical bar mleczny had a menu based on dairy items, these establishments generally also served other, non-dairy traditional Polish dishes as well. The commercial success of the first milk bars encouraged other businessmen to copy this type of restaurant. As Poland regained its independence after World War I, milk bars appeared across most of the country. They offered relatively cheap but nourishing food, and thus achieved even more prominence during the economic depression of the 1930s and World War II. Contrary to official propaganda, the majority of the population was poor, and even moderately-priced restaurants were derided as "capitalist". During the post-war years, most restaurants were nationalized and then closed down by the communist authorities. In the mid-1960s, milk bars were common as a means of offering cheap meals to people working in companies that had no official canteen. They still served mostly dairy-based and vegetarian meals, especially during the period of martial law in the early 1980s, when meat was rationed. After the fall of the communist system and the end of the centrally planned economy, the majority of milk bars went bankrupt, as they were superseded by regular restaurants. In the early 2010s, milk bars began to make a comeback. They became small, inexpensive restaurants .Due to their good locations, milk bars often fall victim to gentrification and are defended by activist groups.Today milk bars are privately owned, but partly subsidized by the state and local governments, which allows it to offer low prices.

Another great video! Just two comments - 1) St. Mary's Basilica (formally the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) is not only the largest brick church in Poland. In fact, it is one of the three largest brick churches in the world (and which of them is the biggest depends on how you measure the size. No one knows for sure.). 2) "Bar Mleczny" is not a communist invention. The first one was established on 1896 in Warsaw, and plenty of them followed after WWI. They were especially popular in the 1930s, during the economic depression.

I was, however, impressed with the European Solidarity Center. Westerplatte and the Baltic coastline were also worth it and easily accessible by bus. I may give the city another chance someday, but it will have to be in the off season.

Well done as always ! I did my studying there & lived in Gdansk -Oliwa/Polanki .Great times in the 80's despite the hardships .Will be back for 5 days at the end of this month , staying in those apartments you think that look like from Hamburg . We did not find the prices super high ,2 bedroom apartment for $120/night in prime location . Too bad we will miss you by 2 weeks -for sure would have invited you to dinner ! Don't miss WWII Museum .Thank you for such great series of videos from the best country in Europe ( for sure ! being very subjective !!!!).

@@TwoMadExplorers you are welcome ! By the way the reason the basilica is painted white ....it was burnt inside at the end of WWII by soviet army ,used to store cattle /horses .My Mom remembers how it looked before -like the basilica in Krakow , full of frescos .It would be very expensive to recreate it now .

We are happy you have reached Gdańsk and the Tri-City. We love your vlogs, you are both so friendly and positive, full of energy! We love you, even more because Naomi is from one of our favourite German cities: Düsseldorf, (and you like our favourite German city - Hamburg, where we used to live in the past), not only because Luke is from one of our favourite European countries Ireland, where we have been to several times and we love Ireland (especially Howth, Greystones, Galway, the Aran Islands, Gweedore, Tory and Gola Islands). We hope you have enjoyed your visits to Sopot and Gdynia (one of our favourite cities on the Baltic Sea). We hope you finally go by train to Hel on the Hel Peninsula (you can always watch some films on our channel filmed on the beautiful and unique Hel Peninsula). You should visit all the villages and settlements on the Hel Peninsula, from Hel Cape and Hel (with its lighthouse - you can have splendid views from the top of it), Jurata (with its fine viewpoint tower and wooden Jurata Pier - both with free entrance) (you can walk 2 km to) Jastarnia (with its harbour and the interesting church), Kuźnica (with its small harbour) and Chałupy (Poland's capital of windsurfing and kitesurfing). Rozewie lighthouse is also worth visiting. We wish you good luck with the whimsical and changeable Polish weather and enjoy your summer in northern Poland, all the best. Warmest wishes and friendly greetings, Paweł and Gosia 🌞 🧡 🌤 🌹 ⛱ 🌅 🧡 😊 🌞 🌟 🍀 🇵🇱 🏝 🏖 🌅 🧡 💙

Which city did you prefer Gdansk or Wroclow? I am flying home in Feb and want to take my folks to one of them for a long weekend. Both look great.

In terms of things to do, Gdansk is much cooler and much larger with more options for everything. In terms of architecture, charm and walkability, Wroclaw is much better.
It depends what you’re looking for 👍
Gdańsk is more developed and more expensive too.. Wroclaw is more quaint and gives off like a artsy vibe!
Hope this helps a bit more

Dear friends I do also recommend take boat or train trip to town Hel - very relaxing to see fishing village ! I never know Gdańsk is so crowded from tourists? Gdańsk is very popular with tourists from Scandinavia countries? Gdańsk have unique history? Was the richest town in Poland! Independent free city! Had own currency ! Because was very expensive city land was very expensive so people build houses upwards? Polish and German live in the city in harmony until nationalism hit Germany!
I do think the war museum is one of the best in country I am now in Sydney Australia and is cold and rain all the time going back in August enjoy 😉 So pls take your girlfriend to Hel 😂😂😂

You are not leaving outside of Gdańsk, for sure. You are leaving probably somewhere around Wrzeszcz or Oliwa area. It is not outside of Gdańsk. It is still Gdańsk. You can find beautiful beaches also in Gdańsk.
If you want to eat good pierogi you should go to Mandu restaurant.
