Anyone in a hurry to get from Fort McDowell to Superior will go south, then east because that route is fairly level.
Going through the Superstitions, especially by Iron Mountain, adds distance, and a lot of extra climbing and descending.
That doesn't mean that there weren't Indian trails running through the mountains that Whites used, all I'm saying is nobody who just wants to get from Fort McDowell to Superior, would go through the mountains.

One big problem with that story. None of the known ore from the eastern Superstitions matches the chemical composition of the matchbox ore. When San Felice originally told this tale the technology didn't exist yet to test the ore as thoroughly as the Univ of NV, Reno did for Dr. Glover. There's a lot of great tales out there, that's what sells books. In my book if the ore analysis doesn't match the matchbox ore, it ain't the lost dutchman.

The tales of the superstitions are amusing. I used to hunt for gold. I don't have to hunt any longer. I do wonder, if you are looking for gold, maybe look somewhere it is likely to be found, which is NOT the superstitions. There is a lot of unfound gold. It is wise to go places where geologically, it is likely to be found.

I don't believe anyone found it. I believe people have been close, but it's probably on a different mountain. The path up to the point everyone thinks is the mine, doesn't exactly fit with the path on the heart stone. The site is close though. People went for the obvious location, really. It's even where I have marked on Google Earth. However, there's several mountains where you could see weavers needle. Everyone who's searched for it has looked in the same spot, and that makes no sense since only one group claims to have found it. If it was there, everyone who looked would have found it there.

I think those are the Peralta's at (The 13 minute mark) that had a mine in the Ft. Mcdowell mountains...... They invited The Dutchman to work with them at the Salt River mine and he killed them and prospected the mine himself ...... The Dutchman was known to have killed between 8-10 people himself (maybe more) and stole their gold and mines.
