  • Welcome to another exciting episode from Cyberwings Security!
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) and Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) are two media access control (MAC) protocols that are used in computer networks. Both protocols allow multiple devices to share a single communication channel, but they do so in different ways.
CSMA/CD is used in wired networks, such as Ethernet networks. When a device wants to transmit data, it first listens to the channel to see if it is in use. If the channel is free, the device transmits its data. However, if the channel is in use, the device waits until the channel is free before transmitting. If two devices transmit at the same time, a collision occurs. When a collision occurs, both devices detect the collision and stop transmitting. They then wait a random amount of time before trying to transmit again.
CSMA/CA is used in wireless networks, such as Wi-Fi networks. It is not possible to detect collisions in a wireless network, so CSMA/CA uses a different approach to avoid collisions. When a device wants to transmit data, it first sends a small packet called a Request to Send (RTS) packet. The RTS packet includes the destination address of the data that the device wants to transmit. If the destination device is ready to receive data, it sends a Clear to Send (CTS) packet back to the source device. The source device then transmits its data. If the destination device is not ready to receive data, it does not send a CTS packet. The source device then waits a random amount of time before trying to transmit again.
