Hey, ive been curious about the best light for a refugium. Ive been using a cheap pinky garden light for my refugium about a year. Yes they are growing, but when i use white light to see it, the chaeto color is not so green like yours. Should i change it to a white light?
Hi Ahmad, if you just want growth a light any 5500K is fine. I have an AI prime HD on mine for control, only to give the appearance of more green, but it’s not necessary.
Going sexual is species specific. For example caulerpa racemosa (grape algae ) will go sexual regardless of how much or little nitrate is in the water. It has to with light and night cycles. Reefers who experiment with growing sexual algae find that if they grow it with light 24/7, it will not go sexual. But then you can’t put it in your display, you need a refugium or separate tank 😃
Hi Anthony, some might say you may be stripping too many nutrients out of the water. I don’t agree, your nutrients will show up. 😊 You may not get much growth because your tank may lack nutrients early on. It really depends on your nutrient level. If you have any nitrate or phosphate, then a refugium would be fine. You can also start one early on just to begin a pod and crustation population. So long story short, no negative effect IMO. 👍🏻
@GflmZerk-el5tu that would be a nice choice, it’s a slow grower, but look really beautiful. It’s not on the top of the list for nutrient export, but that’s not a concern now. Keep it in lower light, or the deep red will turn pale. 8-10 hours photoperiod is fine. If it gets pale, reduce lighting.👍🏻
I had a green slime start growing in my Refugium not sure what’s causing it I’m curious if I’m running the lights too long or is it lack of water flow.
That’s what I thought too. My friend has it in his display tank. It comes off easily with flow so I added a small return pump in there to circulate the water. I think my chaeto is doing better now too that there’s flow. Before I was getting a film of algae at the surface. How does ur Refugium do well I notice it almost has no flow?
Hi Michael, a refugium is a separate tank connected to your main tank that you can use to grow algae. The algae can be harvested to aid in nutrient reduction in your system. 😊
How is your refugium plumbed in, assuming it’s connected to another tank, which are below it…
It’s plumbed into the 75 gallon below. I have a small Sicce in the overflow box that pumps water to it.
@@TOMReefer I take it it’s gravity fed back to the main tank?

How do you tackle the “going sexual” because it realises a whole lot of nitrates

Tom do you run your refugium on a reverse lighting schedule?
Also what gph is your pump that goes up to the refugium? Thanks
Hey Johnathan, I use too run it reverse, but now I don’t.
The pump is a sicce syncra 1.5 👍🏻

@wtjonny 😁
Can there be a negative effect in adding a refugium to early ?

@@TOMReefer I bought some red ogo will that be fine for starter ?

what are bristleworms
Hi Philly, just a worm 😃polychaete. I have a large one in my refugium. Their quite harmless.
Whats the easiest coral you would recommend?
I’d have to go with leathers as easiest to keep👍🏻
Thanks tom!

Better it grows in your refugium! 😃it could be your flow. Mine grows a lot of different ugly algae, but that’s part of what it does in some fugs
