Unfortunately in Germany, you see less and less real bakeries. Most of the so called bakeries, receive deep-frozen industrially produced bakery products that are simply thrown into an oven in that specific outlet. This has nothing to do with artisanal baking. If you have a real artisanal bakery in your neighborhood, support it by all means!
@@marcuszaja6589 I used to have a really good artisanal bakery in the Bavarian village that I live in, but unfortunately the owners decided to sell it a few years ago, so one of these "Aufbackshops" moved in and since then, the quality of the products being sold, has been light years away from what was being produced previously (they also had their own sourdough bread and a delicious potato bread). Potatoes were one of my favorite foods since childhood along with chocolate, bread, cheese and coffee and for those reasons (I could live off of those few things only for the rest of my life, no exaggeration), I loved, loved, loved living in Bayern in Germany and to this day, 7.5 years after coming back stateside, I still miss it!!! Also, the calmness, the country living right outside city limits (only in huge city it feels like actual city living), the clean, adorned, freshly planted flowers in the cities/towns, the freshness of the food in the supermarkets and at the butcher’s!! The bäckerei yummy goodness!! And now I’m crying reminiscing!! Ok, fertig. By the way, I agree with everything you said about how Deutschland has changed you. It was a big culture shock for me and took time to adjust back to stateside living. I came back with great memories though! Thanks for sharing and I’m glad I found you guys!!

You guys are soooo cool. I am a Hungarian living in Berlin-Potsdam now with my German BF. And I can tell, that the sweatpant thing is REAL. Here in North Carolina each county (100 of them) may have their own tax rate, so that would be 100 (more or less) different prices that Belk, for instance, would have to advertise thoughout just North Carolina.
I always am very very happy if somebody from foreign country likes the environment where I am born. It is a big compliment and warms the heart. Germany is such a beautiful, secured and protected area to live that I feel always very comfotable. Potatoes are base culture. As a student there are always 2 dishes: spaghetti with tomato sauce and potato with 'kräuterquark'. Saves generations of student lives at the end of the month. :-)
I’m wondering now,if I have some German in my heritage. We always had coffee and cake in late afternoon and or when company stopped over. We also had potatoes with every meal. Lost of sauerkraut too. My Gmaw use to make it from Scratch! Do Germans also, eat lots of onions & use plenty of black pepper? We did/do & we live into our late 90’s & 100’s!
Maybe you do! A lot of countries here in Europe enjoy some type of afternoon treat. 😍 Ohhh homemade sauerkraut sounds delicious! I think Germans use onions and black pepper.. at least the ones we know do!
have you ever heard of onion cake with bacon and sour cream, or of the so-called " RESTE ESSEN " (leftovers from the day before mixed together), for example noodles with fried potatoes?
Well we put onions in many dishes, but mostly we chop them into tiny little cubes, put them in a frying pan, add oil and stir them until they are a nice glassy brown color as the first inge and then add the rest according to whatever dish we made in the moment.

Look up the man who lived a year only eating potatoes. Its very interesting 🤔 love these vids. Helps me feel like less of an alien xx
The way you feel about leggings in Germany is how I initially felt about shorts in Japan. People don’t wear shorts so much here, so I stopped wearing them for the longest time. I finally decided to wear what I want, even if that means being asked over and over “AREN’T YOU COLD???” when it’s below 23°C. Lol
My parents had potatoes every day. I love Salzkatoffeln (salted potatoes) they were cooked in water (not in salted water!!). After they were cooked, the water was drained, some salt was added, the pot lid came back on the pot and the potatoes in the pot was shaked. That was our salted potatoes. My Grandfather (father of my mother) like them the way the family of my father (as I describe bevore) make them. My Grandfather had bevore only potatoes cooked in salted water.
I remember when I saw people wearing leggings and no skirts or dresses on top for the first time. I thought it looked like wearing see-through tights and nothing on top. As if they had forgotten something. :D I still feel that way, though I don't care. People should wear whatever they want. Even if I think it's funny. ^^
It’s kind of funny because Germans are less prudish about things like nudity. It’s like you can be naked but if you’re going to wear clothes don’t wear this one specific bit of clothing. I always assumed it was because it’s too casual for Germans who love people to look very put together when they go out.
@@g33xzi11a I guess it's a matter of expectations and context. Leggings are or were a kind of underwear and I did not expect to see them worn like Jeans. 🤷🙂
In the US the taxes have to be added on afterwards because you have state tax city tax , and federal tax . This different in every city and state. One state might have 8%; one might have six and one might have no city tax. One might have no state tax, so they can't make it one price. You have to remember the United States are United States. The states have a lot of autonomy to do what they want.
The argument is not about the different taxes in different states. The argument is, that a store should be able to advise those directly on the price tag. The tax will not change for the products in stock anytime. (online shopping is a different thing here, i know).

Well i´m from Finland and here and all the nordic countries we eat alot of potatoes in different forms and Irland is also very famous for having a lot of potatoes. Potatoes are easy to plant and grow here up north. Actually potatoes came to Finland with German blacksmiths at 1730:sh.
I'm with Deana on the "Kaffee und Kuchen" in the afternoon! That was always one of my favorite things about visiting my family in Germany. In addition to eating lots of potatoes, Germans use the small golden potatoes and seem to have fewer varieties than we do in the US. I have never had a baked potato in Germany.
OMG the potato thing is soooooo a German thing. My mom cooks potatoes all the time. Boiled potatoes, then those leftovers get fried. But they are in ever meal. Breakfast fried eggs with those leftover potatoes and then lunch now potatoes cooked up and what's leftover from lunch is diced up for dinner and again fried potato slices for breakfast the next day.
I love potatoes! One of my favorite original dishes is the Hot Mess. It's country fried potatoes mixed with your choice of meat, usually spicy ground turkey with pepper flakes, your choice of cheese (usually shredded Mexican cheese), and a ton Siracha (I freakin' love Siracha!).
...or Rösti, nothing's quicker...all you have to do with the potatoes is peel'm, grate'm, fry'm, eat'm...15 min & done. With creamed mushrooms, with sour cream and smoked salmon (or smoked ham), with a fried egg.... If it comes to Bratkartoffeln... try them with Bratheringen ;-)
My mother age 84 is from Berlin and eats potatoes until they are coming out of her ears. Cake and coffee at noon. She rubs off on all of us kids and we are proud of our German side. A little late for me now in my 50’s, I’m trying to learn German through her and Rosettastone. Great video!
Living in Germany as a child with military parents, bakeries were my favorite. Fresh bread is a wonderful experience and the smell in a bakery is heavenly. When we moved back to the states, I was in sixth grade and very upset about leaving Germany.
I stand too close to people sometimes and I have to make myself aware of personal space and take a step back. I think I’ll like the coffee and cake culture because it’s also common with Mexican and Mexican American culture.
Potatoes are definitely a German thing! Before meine Mutter passed, I asked her to write down recipes for me. The schnitzel page was blank but she left me the recipe for Bratkartoffen, even putting in (fried potatoes) just in case I didn't know what she was talking about. She LOVED her potatoes. Phil, you're not alone ... she raised a potatoe loving girl. I just finished off some German kartoffen salat. Deanna, you're right, Germans do not adhere to the bubble and my mother loved kaffee und kuchen. Keep 'em coming ...
VAT has to be included in the price in an end consumer sale by law. Here in Spain a personal bubble is practically nonexistent. My feature dish when cooking is the Bauernfrüstück.

Leggings look like trash here in the US. Wear them to the gym or yoga but not in public. During the summer, a lot of girls dress really trashy too.
im on phills side the price you see is the price you pay in the uk also. i lived in canada years back and tax used to wind me right up
Commenting because I enjoy you both and you deserve all the algorithm points.
I hate it too when someone enter my Bubble!! But there are some Situation you have too....but in this Coronatimes most people learn to have some distance!!!
Kartofler / potatoes are common in northern Europe I think in Denmark we count them as our main meal
Deana's pronuncation of Kartoffeln is brilliant 😁 9:48
the personal bubble thing is so real!! i just moved to europe from the usa and it was so off putting at first and now i realize its because there is usually just less physical space and things are more compact
You are welcome, Deana! :)
pshhh!
Wow, Deana, your german got a lot better. Pleasure to see your progress ... :)
My parents had potatos with almost every meal. So, when starting to cook on my own, rice and noodles where the only thing for decades. It is just now, that I have come back to appreciate potatos. "The best french fries ?" A big deal!
Thanks for sharing and I’m glad I found you guys!!
keep up the good work, love this channel!
I love Deana‘s hair 😍😍
YAYYY a new video lol
Thanks for sharing, I was getting kind of nervous to go to Germany bc I didn't know if I would have a good experience. ❤️
😬❤
Next time you guys visit the states you’ll have to come to Deleware!! No sales tax!! You’ll love it!! And our beaches are beautiful too 🌞🏖🌸
Danke fur das teilen, I love your vlogs!
There are so many delicious kinds of potatoes. Bamberger Hörnchen is my favourite, or “Neue Kartoffeln” with Spargel and Sauce Hollandaise! A thick slice of smoked ham beside... Bratkartoffeln, Kartoffelgratin, Kartoffelpuffer....Buttered Potatoes, Baked Otatoes.
You both are fantastics. I've discovered you recently and love the videos
Yeee, I did it, I wrote the first comment. You guys are amazing, and your videos are lovely.
Thank You so much for the nice words! =)
You guys are soooo cool. I am a Hungarian living in Berlin-Potsdam now with my German BF. And I can tell, that the sweatpant thing is REAL. In Hungary, especially in Budapest, wearing gym clothes as a lifestyle or just that you go and grab something from the grocery and you don't want to change from home wear to jeans is totally a thing. When I arrived to Berlin, after a months my boyfriend nicely asked me if I can maybe change to jeans as HE FEELS UNCOMFORTABLE that I am wearing joggers to shop or for a stroll around the lake!!!!! We had quite some arguments about it, I just simply could not understand him and I started to feel that I do something wrong ... until NOW. Forever grateful for video !!! ;)
Ever since i move to Germany :
1) I go to Edeka at least 4 times a week!
2) DM is my heaven, there is no way i go in and not come out with a single thing!
3) Bread , cold cut, cheese with butter, coffee - everyday breakfast.
4) I stop to drink milk but in love with Haferdrink!
5) I stop to wear that much makeup.
6) I talk quietly.....(shiiiii
Phil has nailed saying „leggins“ perfectly in a southern accent! Love it! 😊
Here in North Carolina each county (100 of them) may have their own tax rate, so that would be 100 (more or less) different prices that Belk, for instance, would have to advertise thoughout just North Carolina.
These videos help me feel less anxious about moving to Germany soon!
Don t worry no one will bite u ..... Exept they are hungry
if you get more east in europe the potato game becomes even stronger, you know
Up to 80%.
I am an older person but years ago the grocery stores and many other stores were closed on Sunday
Thanks I will take a peek at that one too, but LOVE Deana “und” Phil.
You two are so cool !!!
@@axelk4921 Yes. This all making me Miss Oma,but in A good way. I’m the only GChild that can mimic her cooking. My siblings ask me how to make such and such.
@@axelk4921 Resteessen is when you fry all of the leftovers with potatoes in a pan. (Pyttipanna in swedish). The cake with onions, sour cream and bacon bits is "Zwiebelkuchen" - it's a bit too late in the year for Federweißer, sadly, but fruity white wine will do as an accompaniment as well.
Longer way!!!that's exactly the point!😘
I grew up in Illinois in the30' & 40. My father loved potatoes, we had potatoes every day mostly mashed but also roasted and home fries.
Leggins and sports wear in public is so "sub class" here in Germany. Sports wear for sport!
Seriously I agree with Phil though :D
Big mac menu in all Schengen countries is 6 euros , whereas in Turkey big mac menu, whopper menu is 2.10 euros. 2 pounds of tomatos during the summer time is 40 cents , 2 pounds of apple is priced 70 cents, 2 pounds of pastry is priced at pattiserie , 7 euros in Turkey. 2 pounds of either potato, cucumber, cabage is priced 50 cents. All kinds of fruits and vegetables are produced in Turkey.
Im Irish living in Germany just 3 weeks now. We are the ultimate potato eaters and also given derogatory terms spud diggers, etc. I love Germany and the people here but mostly am so grateful to find a part of culture in common.
Kaffee und Kuchen is the most social event in the neighborhood xD. We chat above the fences with the neighbors while we have Kaffe und Kuchen.
Like your teddy Mrs. Deana..Glad you are enjoying Germany and becoming a part of their nationality
The bakery and the aftoon thing are common in the Netherlands as well and the potatos as well
You have to try "Spätzle"! It's a schwäbisch thing (kinda like noodles) and most people love it!
käsespätzle are deanas favorite german food as far as i remember :)
@@torsten.breswald Oh, okay! I can really undestand that!
You guys are so cute. I love your videos!
I am feeling you, especially the people crossing personal energetical boundaries thing ... 🙃
Potatoes are very popular in the Midwest too (heck, all of the middle and northern states). Very!
You guys have really got me through some challenging times as a front line health and social care key worker. When I get home it can take a little while to unwind. Thank you so much for your vlogs. Btw you are inspirational. I made myself some cabbage rolls the other night and they were delicious. I’m also signed up with my local college to start learning basic German. Keep doing what you are doing. Take care and stay safe x
Wow thank you so much for saying that! Comments like these are very motivating and inspiring as well. And, YUM! Hopefully your cabbage rolls turned out better than ours! We need to try making those again now that it's getting colder outside. Thank you for spreading positivity and please stay safe!! 🤗💜
Hopefully you did not forget to remove the outer leaves and to blanch the light green leaves first, so that they can be rolled better. You can fry them sensibly... you can go a little dark (not black, of course). I'm sure it'll work out.
As an american also living im Germany as i am married to a German... we live in small town but most women wear leggings everywhere!! But i feel your points are so true!!
One of the best channel I had ever seen.
Well i´m from Finland and here and all the nordic countries we eat alot of potatoes in different forms and Irland is also very famous for having a lot of potatoes. Potatoes are easy to plant and grow here up north. Actually potatoes came to Finland with German blacksmiths at 1730:sh.
You guys are amazing I love watching your videos!
Hi from Serbia ❤️🇷🇸
This channel should have way more views ,a happy couple that enjoys going through life none of that drama bs
Bratkartoffeln mit Speck und Zwiebeln ❤🤤
...or Rösti, nothing's quicker...all you have to do with the potatoes is peel'm, grate'm, fry'm, eat'm...15 min & done. With creamed mushrooms, with sour cream and smoked salmon (or smoked ham), with a fried egg....
If it comes to Bratkartoffeln... try them with Bratheringen ;-)
Lekker Lekker !
Und dazu eine gebratene Scholle. Was will man mehr. MfG
As a person in Minnesota and my maternal grandparents are from Norway (grandma) and Germany (grandpa) ... Potatoes are a staple, for sure.
Enjoyed your presentation
Thank you, Lou!

Cool Overall "Selfreflection"!
You're welcome, Deana!
That's the one thing I'll miss about corona time - the extra space at the grocery store.
I stand too close to people sometimes and I have to make myself aware of personal space and take a step back.
I think I’ll like the coffee and cake culture because it’s also common with Mexican and Mexican American culture.
You are right local bakeries have died off. But they are make a resurgence lately!!
