The definite star of this show is the Octatrack - live looper, fx, scenes, routing and mixing. The other two elements are interchangeable with pretty much anything. Damn I wish I had an Octatrack! (err I just got to the end of the video where you talked about this exact same stuff!)

I think the "1 Drummachine, 1 Synth, 1 Sampler" Philosophy is a perfectly valid way to look at things... If that sampler is the Octatrack. Without a mixer it will otherwise be pretty hard to get close to the results. But still, nice video.

Got a Tempest the day they discontinued them. It's in my top 3 drum machines alongside the jomox xbase09 and TR808. It vibes like all the favs that I've sold over the years and miss: novation drumstation + linn drum + oberheim dmx stretch. It's slowly pushing the TR 626, Kawai XD5 and R8m out of my studio. It's not perfect, but neither were any of those machines. The Tempest really feels like home too me and the synth mode is just a great bonus.

Nice video as usual! For me: ESQ-1 as synth/sequencer, Mirage Rack as sampler, 2 CZ-101’s as high line and low line, Yamaha RX-5 or TR-707 as drum machine, a couple of Alesis FX. Made money with that setup in the 80’s. 😎👍🏼

I ended up having to sell everything a while back during a bit of a cash poor period. I loved my Octotrack and once things are stable I'm definitely wanting it again. Do everything inside that and potentially pair it with budget drums and synths a la volca, behringer etc and you've got a total package. Having played with a Tempest before though... They are so much fun.

Stoked to see a Tempest in a current video! I love my Tempest. It's been in a box since I moved from LA city to Manhattan Beach (a year ago ugh) but I'm gettin ready to bust it out. As you know so many pieces of gear out at once can often get overwhelming and it's nice to change up the rigs form time to time. Always get a fresh perspective that way. Nice work bro as usual.

  • @g3cd
    @g3cd 2 года назад +1

I'm doing pretty much the same with the Polyend Seq as a MIDI step sequencer, some effect pedals and the 1010music BlackBox. Difference is: I can't do this live (also because I'm not as good as you, I started last spring and am still learning a lot), so I first sequence some synth (like the Norand Mono or the Modal Argon 8M) or some drums from a Nord Drum 3P, then play around with a couple of effect pedals for delay, reverb, chorus (or other weird stuff, I just got the Meris Hedra which does wonders to a mono synth and an Pladask Elektrisk Baklengs pedal), then record the result into the Blackbox and then do a 2nd session the other day where I mix the samples into a "song".
So while it's nice that the Octatrack can do so much, I learned by now that I don't use gear much that requires menu diving or has a million hidden options (e.g. the Red Panda Tensor 😖). I like one function per knob and right now, I can understand my gear better by splitting up the tasks into several steps: 1. sound design 2. melody 3. song mix.
Nonetheless ... same idea behind the setup. Just different gear and a slower, more comprehensable "less pro, more noob" workflow, maybe I'll get to your level one day 😅

I've got the Octatrack as you like my main thing in the set up.
The Digitakt is playing the drums and some Basslines and acts also like a little mixer for the Typhon for some Live Mono Bass Fun.
For the Melodies I'm using the JU-06A. It's nice but to make all melodic stuff with this it's sometimes really difficult to reach some different results.
In the Future the Take 5 will be a part of my set up because it sounds so good!

I'm all for maximizing duties and covering all bases with the fewest pieces of kit. My current setup to do this: Alesis Micron. It is a chameleon synth with lots of classic sounds buried in it along with the ability to mix them up (including acid 303 stuff with the 3 pole filter and has it's own distortion), the digitone to cover the FM base the micron can't do in terms of the synth sounds, then MC101 for a massive rompler and sample editor and it's all fed into the main machine, an RS7000, a machine that is a rompler and sampler and midi controller and has features most DAWS can't match when it comes to hands on editing of sequences in real time.
These 4 units voltron into my setup and the sonic possibilities are essentially limitless. THey cover all bases: live instruments (within reason, obviously), subtractive synths and classic synth tonal quality (the micron literally cannot be distinguished from classics even by expert ears), FM synthesis for extreme experimental stuff (only the FS1R or OPSix can really out do it but those are for absolutely mental FM freaks), and the sampler/rompler/sequencer brain to pull it all together.
This is my mini studio and it's my space ship to any sonic dimension I wish to go to. Sure, it may look like a junky millinium falcon, but it can do the kessel run in just 12 parsecs, too.

Something like my akai force can do this all in the box although I love adding my minibrute 2s to it and I really want a drum machine but you can’t beat the quickness of work flow. It has some great synth plugins including a great electric piano one, a good to great (depends on how much work you put into it) drum machine plugin, amazing sampling, internal mixer with all kinds of effects buses and sends, lfos and automation for controlling things internally or externally, cv outputs and more. It even has a regular style looper or you can loop directly to an audio track. It can honestly do a lot, so far I use it for producing, running stuff live with backing tracks and/or clock tracks, sampling and as a external effects unit both for a mixer and through the fx loop on a guitar amp and out doors out all amazingly. I went from needing a bunch of equipment to now being able to use this for a lot of it. I think the mpcs have a lot of the same capabilities but not as quick of a flow for all of it and mind not as powerful on the processing, I’m thinking about being one to be a separate fx unit/2nd samples/looper and/or like having two dj decks but for live music making

You dont need to beef up your Tempest in OT..... just use feedback and distortion together with layering while designing the drums. This will take some time, have dedicated sessions to create and synthesize your kicks. And always, always use that envelope decay > envelope decay amount modulation in the matrix. Distortion on Tempest is way better than on Ar btw. There is no reason to search for fundamentals in that OT eq... just boost your fundamental on the synth.

Time is perfect for Sequential to make a more affordable Tempest like they made an affordable poly with the Take 5. I'm happy if it keeps the analog synth but only provides tweakable samples for drums. Make it with a two-octave offset pads keyboard that doubles up as drum pads, kind of like on OP-1, except larger. I'm sure that would sell like cupcakes at 700 bucks

Hi Ricky thank you so much for all your knowledge sharing and so frequent and rich contents. I'm in the dawless world since a really few time, your videos are for sure the most useful, complete and inspiring
I'd like to ask you: in a setup like this one, how do you manage the arrangement? is there a brain which holds all (or almost) the single tracks/parts, basically sending just midi notes to all the other devices, or do you prefer setting each device's sequencer and then switching patterns manually, or with program change, when possible? I'm really undecided about this topic: on one hand it's better holding the whole song, or project, in just one device; on the other hand it's a pity sometimes not to take advantage of some nice features of the single sequencers. What do you think about it? I'm quite sure you faced the same, while arranging your tunes. Thanks again!

I've gone through a few modern drum machines over the years. Machinedrum UW, Jomox xbase etc... but it turns out, tonally, the one I regret selling was the MFB Tanzbar (v1). Worth checking into before splurging on a Tempest. Because, the raw tone, is just right there. My current favourite is the Acidlab Drumatix, a sleek take on the best of the 606, with some added 808 beef and Boss lo-fi crackle. To me, the MFB Tanzbar and Acidlab Drumatix are the low-key future classics. RIP Manfred Fricke :(

I love the tri-force of such a simple but powerful setup! I’m working with something similar in A4, MDUW+ and OT - But I often need more polyphony than A4 can handle, which is where Hydrasynth & DM12 come in. It’s obviously more busy and less focused, but it’s manageable. I currently have to run the polys through MD and A4 to get everything into OT, but I definitely need to invest in a mixer..perhaps bluebox would be a perfect fit.

Go deep on the Tempest my friend. Yes, it’s missing some stuff but each time I sit down with it, magic happens - feedback as a mod destination is epic for example (maybe a bit harsh for your stuff but cool none the less).

Yo, this is such a vibe! Feel like I need to come see you in a club someday, this is hard. The Octatrack looks like so much fun. Been wanting to get my hands on one for years, feels like there's so much potential for live performance. Would love to see more of this!

Hi Ricky! Could you please link the synth stand you are using here? Thanks!

Nice combo but I would prefer a dedicated sampler like my Z4 (no built in sequencer) an analog poly, analog mono and a hardware sequencer for my minimum DAWLESS setup.
My regular studio includes three hardware samplers, a few digital/analog synths and hardware sequencers.

I have a great sample, a great synth and a clone of an iconic drum machine, all the right tools, But I'm such a newb to working in this hardware medium so I feel so handcuffed by my own lack of skills, but I just have to keep digging and trying and learning. I know when I crack it this rig will be such a powerhouse, hahaha. so far its me scratching my head a lot, haha

Tempest! Shame that Dave Smith quit making this awesome drum machine. I love the sound of the new Soma Pulsar 23 and the Rytm is great as well as the Jomox AlphaBase.

What do you think of the MPC Keys 61. It seems to have the sampler, synth and drum machine in one. Could you use that alone for a live set? Would you bring a Digitakt or second box along?

The classic line from anyone who has ever used a Tempest, 'I don't know why its doing that, but it sounds kinda cool..'

Based on the title you could say that all one would need then is the OP1. Sampler, drum machine, synth and a 4 track recorder as a bonus :)
