I near drowned when I was 5. When I went under for the last time everything went black and awareness ceased. It came back when I awoke on the beach, having been resuscitated. That and 9 following years of Catholic school is why I'm an Atheist today.

I agree. It’s unfortunate. That evolution has created the unique coincidence that humans will use language to develop confirmation biases, making it incredibly easy to accidentally start believing in supernatural interactions.
But, of course, it is what it is, because if it isn’t that would be hard for me to accept according to my scientific understanding of what’s true. 😉

What do you think the most important difference is?
I’d describe myself as a sceptic of miracles even though I believe in God. I used to always think the time of miracles ended with Jesus.
But when I met my wife online, playing a mobile game with a chat feature, my opinion entirely changed.
Within a few seconds of saying “hello” saw an innumerable amount visions of our life together, all within the course of a second.
They continue to be fulfilled exactly as I saw them.
I knew what my wife will want to name our first child.
Of course, I’m not sharing any of this with her. She’s an atheist.
@@EchoChamberDweller Hi, I'm an Atheist and the only ones on that list that I consider even remotely real are luck and aliens. The former because its basically just good things happening to a person based entirely on random chance and the latter because the Universe is to fucking big for life to NOT exist elsewhere, based purely on statistics. That does not mean I think that they are scifi super advanced civilizations, but life is life, even if they are just self replicating proteins.

The dishonesty tends to be stupid enough that the answer is 'dishonest AND stupid'. When someone keeps on parroting the same mistake over and over despite being repeatedly corrected, the distinction between being too stupid to get it, too dishonest to get it, and too stupid to realize that being brazenly dishonest isn't clever becomes academic.

@@Tuna_Man2323 I think it's usually to try to get the atheist to say that only physical, scientific evidence are acceptable. Then they say that's why atheists don't understand because their god can't be proved that way.
Most of the time, the atheist will say any verifiable evidence and that just flusters them and they just ask the question again hoping for the answer to change.

this does not qualify as an NDE. He said he was sleeping and his heart stopped. He did not say he was in a hospital setting, so presumably in his bed. How does one know their heart stopped after they wake up from a dream in their own bed without a heart monitor?
I think it's a good teaching example, but labeling it as an NDE under the facts he presented is a bit dishonest. It was a dream.
Unless he did say he was in the hospital and I missed it this would not qualify. (also an atheist here, I feel I have to qualify that)
When a skeptic (or someone not prone to magical thinking) has a near-death experience, they're like "cool dream", then they go on with their life as usual.
They don't go about proclaiming that as some life-changing experience (because it wasn't that for them). So accounts of near-death experiences are vastly overrepresented by people who did read way too much into those experiences.
Same for dreams.
Someone should start collecting accounts from such skeptics, just to prove a point to people saying those experience do mean something (but those people would probably say the experiences of the skeptics actually meant stuff).

If we look at the billions of people who live in developed countries, there are a majority who own at least one motor vehicle and a minority who don't own a car and have no interest in owning a car. Now, if you were in the business of selling Ford motor vehicles and you wanted to sell as many as you could, would you go and try to sell a Ford to the minority who don't own a car and have no interest in owning a car, or would you go to all the Hyundai and Toyota owners and try to convince them to buy a Ford instead?
The answer seems obvious to me.
What I don't understand is why the bible babblers like to claim that atheists only represent 3% to 7% of the population on earth but they spend all their efforts atheist forums to try and sell their g0d when there are billions people who already believe in a different g0d who only need to be persuaded to change the brand of g0d they have chosen.
Of course, if Christianity was the Ford motor company they would have to offer ten thousand different models to keep up with the bible babblers but that's another story.

I was a Christian at the time when I clinically died and was put on life support. I saw nothing. It is your brain filling in blanks, waking up, and keeping your body alive. That’s it.

I've had an NDE and could've sworn I saw a bubbling light but woke up before I even could see what it was. I'm 30 now and I think the light in my head was me seeing me rise out of the bubbling river after my mother saved my life. After clarifying that, I think complete oblivion is the end, therefore everyone must make a difference in things right here and now
I was brought up being thought heaven and hell is a real place and this thought is so intense I can’t believe any other way it brings me so much anxiety and sadness and nightmares my life is hard.

@EchoChamberDweller Sexual reproduction first developed in eukaryotic cells. Of course this is different than multicellular organism sex.
The very first was probably in green algae, one of the first multicellular organism. So they didn't have distinct sexes but had cells that functioned as different gametes.
Sexual reproduction was just one way of reproduction. They were definitely not binary in terms of biological sex.

The best explanation I've come across so far is that it's down to the cytoplasmic genes of eukaryotes. Basically mitochondria and chloroplasts reproduce by themselves and asexually. Thus any merger of cells to allow the nuclear DNA to be mixed results in the 2 sets of mitochondria/chloroplasts fighting it out which on average is detrimental to the cells. Cell differentiation then is the simplest solution to that problem.

You mean that the latter organisms that incorporated differentiation in reproduction after semi-random genetic changes reproduced more quickly and efficiently, and thus became dominant in their environment.

I don't believe in an afterlife, but a few years ago, I had a very vivid dream that I grew very old and died. And then I woke up lying on a lush green meadow, with a lot of flowers around and for some reason butterflies. And I was young again! I sat up and look around and it was lovely weather and I see a a few beautiful houses with gaps between them in the distance. As I was about to get up, I hear familiar barks and see the two dogs who I have had in my life running to great me and they cover my face with licks. And then I see my two cats who passed away when I was still a teenager! They were like "We've been waiting for so long for you". And I am beyond happy and then I get up and walk to the houses where my family members are.
It's a nice dream but that's all that it was. Just a dream.

I feel like if any of these were real actual spiritual experiences. There wouldnt be ANYTHING that resembles what we already know. Considering that its supposed to be "outside" of our reality. Any sort of cultural refrences that i hear when people claim they "saw god" or heaven, i just dismiss it for that reason. It would truly be inexplicable. We almost lost you" and they're saying "OHHHHH SHHHH NOOOOOOOO" because everything was so glorious and now they're suffering to beat hell.
