- The 2001 Nisqually earthquake occurred at 10:54:32 local time on February 28, 2001 and lasted nearly a minute. The intraslab earthquake had a moment magnitude of 6.8 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe). The epicenter was in the southern Puget Sound, northeast of Olympia, but the shock was felt in Oregon, British Columbia, eastern Washington, and Idaho.This was the most recent of several large earthquakes that occurred in the Puget Sound region over a 52-year period and caused property damage valued at $1-4 billion. One person died of a heart attack and several hundred were injured.

I am a Seattle citizen...this "Nisqually" event was the last quake of any magnitude we have had...I feel like we are overdue for another one! We have had a couple of minor quakes since--non more than 4.0. I am now 77yo, and can remember other large quakes...1949 (I was 3), then a sharp, 6.9 event in April of 1965...I was in high school at that time, and people were screaming like banshees! Maybe I will be around for another one, maybe not! The Nisqually one was a really "roller" one, and lasted for over 30 seconds...I jumped out of bed, hit the hallway, and shouted "hang ten"!...to the delight of my sons, but the disgust of my wife! "You never fail to show off!" she said--and she was right!
Im 32 but I remember when I lived south of Olympia in Centralia when I was like 5years old so like 97 there was a pretty good earthquake noby really talks about and I find it anywhere online weird

Wow I for some reason never saw footage of that quake and I watch quake footage on RUclips alot. Such a large quake and only one person died is amazing. A couple vids seemed more like a 7.4. Must have been a shallow quake. Gonna Google it now lol

This was not the Cascadia fault. This was a much smaller fault line between Tacoma and Olympia.

This was more of a medium than small. The thing is, we really don't get them of a noticable size here at all. Every 20-40 years... so people aren't used to it. Personally, I thought it was pretty cool. But, I didn't experience any damage.
@@sherimatukonis6016 Well, I understand, I said that because my country is very seismic and every 1 or 2 weeks there is an earthquake of 4.4 and that can vary up to 5.6 degrees. *My English is not very good :(*

@@sherimatukonis6016yea I was excited when I felt my first pretty decent size earthquake in New Jersey, it was a 4.8 so not crazy but still kinda big for my area.
