I think you’ve got the wrong end of the stick here. BB King is “annoyed” that Mayer would say it was “stealing his licks”. He grabs the mic and gives an audible “oh no” or something and a related facial expression. Also, look at the eye roll when Mayer says about walking into his house etc. He thinks what John is saying is ridiculous. The evolution of the blues (and most music) is taking inspiration from what has gone before and expanding on it. BB King is showing how humble he was here.
BB liked to play LOUD. He understood the relationship between electric guitar and amplifier and was the true pioneer of electric blues. He wanted the notes to last longer than just a quick burst, hence his use of volume in order to sustain notes. It wasn’t feedback, it was sustain. BB King WAS The Blues! RIP, The Beale Street Blues Boy. Long live The King!

But sometimes I'll do a recording session and someone wants something like a loud Hendrix style live at Newport vibe. That's when I dig out my 69 super lead and crank it to 10.

Dude can play, and write, and sing, and play and sing at the same time, and do it all well. 99% of the population can't strum three cowboy chords and sing in tune at the same time. He goes on stage and hangs with BB King like it's just another Tuesday night. Props to him.

People have a hard time accepting him because his personality is so millennial/shallow/insecure/cocky/unsettled that the music feels like a costume on him. After all, that sound came from a culture that was very badly disaffected and Mayer comes from a rich and bored culture. I don’t know what to say or think about the that incongruity except that it sounds really cool and you can’t blame people from trying to do it. Mayer happens to be wildly talented and does it at pretty close to the highest level. He does probably need to quit with the self-effacing comments though. They take away from the experience and this music is about the experience.

BB was irritated with Mayer's mimicry in this performance, and in a later performance with Derek Trucks BB basically snubs Mayer and keeps praising Trucks. I'm sure there's respect from BB, but he's not impressed by hearing himself aped, he's looking for something real.
Mayer knows music theory and can thus add more flavor than BB who seems to only know Pentatonic minor scale for the most part. Mayer usually holds back not to outshine the legends when playing with them. But when hes by himself he outplays them and their songs.
He went to Berklee College of Music in Boston. Just about anyone can go to that school. The fact that he grew up in the upper middle class has nothing to do with anything. The bottom line is that the guy has talent.
It is not necessary to live a hard life to be a great musician of any genre. You must be 12 years old or something. If not your brain stop developing at that age anyway.

In my opinion, Mayors voice is No real depth no real emotion and same with B.B. King’s blues playing. Its almost cookie cutter just doesn’t do a whole lot for me… boring. In my opinion Mayors is a pretty damn good guitar player though.
BB is like 80 years old here, so yeah I get that. But to say he played like that throughout his whole career is pretty ignorant. He lost some fire after the mid 1960s. No one can play guitar like they did in their youth.

When Slash played with BB King, he laid down his guitar. When John Mayer plays with BB King, he soaks up the entire show and makes BB sit there like Grandpa at the Christmas party. He seems like an office worker type with 2.3 children, a nice wife and family and very little personality. But he is a good player. I bet he is a drag to be out on the road with. Maybe similarly boring folks like his rather dull personality. He sure lacks the coolness of Johnny Winter and Muddy Waters. I like being in a band where at least one member has warrants or is marginally insane.
There has to be a distinction between pioneers of an art form and those good at mimicking like Mayer and SRV. SRV grew into his own voice - maybe Mayer will as well.
