Yes a real hokey mask is thicker and more ridge. It is far stronger then the mask they were using. I still think a good stick with an axe would had been able to get though though. The skull might had taken less damage from the rock though.

Yes. I understand why they do it. Those heads take a lot of time and a decent amount of money to make, but it does make some of the multi-hit tests difficult to gauge.
