- “To Fight Monsters, We Created Monsters of Our Own.” This 10-year anniversary project is both a celebration of a franchise I grew up obsessing over and a milestone in my Lego design career. - Matthew
Lego Jaeger Designer: AnythingButYes / Matthew Lu
"To celebrate the 10th Year anniversary was an essential part of my Lego Design Career as it is the Franchise I grew up obsessing and devoted to. It became a big part of my life as I have always enjoyed giant robots fighting monsters. Using Lego bricks as a canva to recreate these giant machines was motivating as it helped me rediscover my fondness for Lego and finding my own way of inspiring others. Beginning with an Idea of creating Gypsy’s Head with no vision of what it can look like in the finished product. I pushed myself to come up with different techniques and approaches to make the Jaeger as accurate as possible to the movie counterpart with a promised deadline before the end of the year. Knowing now, The promise is fulfilled as I have completed a project devoted to a franchise that I could never have imagined to even begin with. Along this up and down journey came with meeting many different people who have supported me and my devoted project. And to have alongside in the production of this project is Duy ho"

"I, too, grew up building and collecting Lego (think Bionicle, Exo Force, etc.) and watching mecha anime. When Pacific Rim hit the big screen, it became an instant classic to me and cemented itself as one of my all-time favorite action flicks. Pacific Rim’s dark, gritty undertones, rich worldbuilding, and exceptionally original character designs caught the attention of my 12-year-old self. I believed that the concept of Jaegers and Kaiju would be highly compatible as Lego models, and was excited to see Matthew being among the first within the community to pioneer Lego Pacific Rim. I DMed him with my thoughts and creative outlook, and was surprised at his willingness to involve me in the process. I helped him bring the world of Pacific Rim to life from a narrative perspective, and tried my best to faithfully convey the depth of its lore. I hope you all enjoyed this as much as we have creating it!"
Appreciation Note
A huge thank you to Guillermo Del Toro, the production team, and Pacific Rim’s thriving fanbase. Without you, this project would have never been possible.
