Visiting the Brick Mountain Railroad

- Today, we take a ride around the Brick Mountain Railroad in Connecticut. There's not much I'm at liberty to say about this railroad except that it's steep, winding, looks like a rollercoaster, has some interesting signals and is a fun challenge to run on.

All I can say is the guy that owns that layout has a very understanding wife! Wickedly awesome. Block signals, grade crossings, tunnels, and massive treadles and bridges. Thanks for sharing even if it is In Connecticut! Good video.
She's either very understanding or she's not speaking to him anymore.
What's your issue with Connecticut, my adopted home state for 23 years? Jersey Boy now and loving it, but still "of" CT even if not from it. any longer....
@@countrypaul None other than the state is no larger than 4 counties in Texas. Just threw it out to see if I get a raise.
@@kenshores9900 - got it! I do love Connecticut and remain "of" it even though my wife and I have been in New Jersey since 1993 for m3, 1982 for her.
Greetings from UK. That is the most fantastic railroad I have seen in a very long time, not seen anything like it 70 must have breathed a sigh of relief when the shed came into view,
Downhill was okay but it was a real slog going back up. The 70 was definitely happier after cooling down. The hills overheated the traction motor!
Does the UK have a park like this?
I am impressed, looks like Disneyland meets a real outfit.
Real semiphores, signals, crossing gates, switch stands, a a Moffit mock up. Amazing that place is, glue to the screen.
My suggestion put a number board below the always red signal, make it a stop and proceed. Still gut wrenching to me running a red.
The rest is truly, the icing of the cake.
🤘🏻🤜🏼
The first time I ran the red, I was VERY nervous despite knowing that it was one-way traffic. Apparently it was a temporary problem, though. At least according to the signal maintainer.
Some fascinating glimpses of unusual models in the larger gauge, too.
I believe that was a MTC (Miniature Train Company) G16.
Wow that is awesome with all the bridges, crossing, scenery!
I did not know of where this place was until now. Love it to know end. The trusses and everything is so grand that it trips my Triger. WOW, Old Master Gunnery SGT USMC. Love it all the way my brothers.
Funnily enough I was watching a few videos on this particular railroad only a few months ago, so I recognised it immediately. :)
Wow...............just wow to explain that railroad. They have working signals to represent a lot of different railroads. Fantastic. Love the steam sitting around there too. the bridges are impressive.
BTW- Green would be "clear" proceed at maximum authorized speed for that track segment, Yellow would be "Approach" reduce speed prepared to stop at next signal, and Red would be Stop unless it is red with a number board on the mast, then it would be stop and proceed at restricted speed prepared to stop short of another train or obstruction or proceed at restricted speed prepared to stop short of another train or obstruction depending on the year you want to look at. The B&O CPL's and PRR PL signals were everywhere in my area with 5 railroads that used to be in my city. PRR, Erie and B&O the biggest followed by the AC&Y/NW/new WLE and the Akron Barberton Belt industrial switching RR. I miss the good days of railroading when we had industry and railroads. That was a fantastic tour and ride of this layout. Thankyou
I can’t speak… I have never seen anything like that. Absolutely fantastic. Thank you for sharing.
This I have to see live!!! Delightful!
Absolutely amazing! Bucket list
So Wonderful jurney 😮😮😮❤❤❤
They have a nice selection of rolling stock.
They certainly do!
That’s awesome I was amazed how the lights and crossings all worked like the real deal lol thanks for sharing
The guy has a full time signal maintainer that he hired off one of the local short lines.
Absolutely fantastic RR did not expect it to be that long. Construction of the tracks and Bridges is amazing 🤩
It's even more amazing in person! The video doesn't quite give an indication of just how steep the hills are. The ruling grade is 8% on the mainline!
Incredible with all those miles of track.
I’ve seen this track in many videos and have always wanted to visit, glad you guys had that opportunity. Awesome and amazing layout to be sure!
It is access by invitation only. I've known about this track for a number of years and was never invited until now.
Just from this video alone, I want to go see this railroad, looks so cool and scenery looks awesome.
That was a wonderful experience.
That was one long trestle even with a curve, the lower section I saw was a traditional
wooden designed , that had to have been one big project. along with being a really long
runs with twists ,curves , tunnels too.all in the woods, how wonderful of a place to
run your train. the first train I saw to the left looked like live steam! as you pulled out of the shop.
thank you for sowing this wonderful club.
That was a live steam engine.
Great looking railroad!
Wow! I am speechless!!!!
That was one of the most awesome rides I've seen!
That is my favorite 7.25-in gauge railroad I love that they have a 16-in gauge line with an original miniature train company g16 diesel train it's also cool that they've modeled nice railfanning locations such as tehachapi loop and Moffitt tunnel although it's not as long as the real Moffitt tunnel but still pretty cool
Thanks for sharing, that was amazing!!! Lot of work there.im in awww....
I really enjoy watching these ride along videos as well as your snow plowing videos
Awsom ride thats a great place
WOW!!!! Simply put WOW!!! That Brick Mountain railroad is amazing.
Wow! I can’t believe the scale of this thing! And all just for fun...
Amazing, isn't it?
If the owner of this train and railroad could get the proper permits. licenses, and insurance coverage, I'd be the first to ride this railroad ALL DAY if he opened this to the public for rides !! Totally fantastic!!!!!!!! It would be worth the drive from southern Wisconsin to visiti this place.
wow!! What a tressle.
What a privilege to ride this railroad with 70. Fantastic.
It certainly was a privilege! This is an invitation only railroad.
Just like Adrian Shooters place and Sir Robert McAlpines place too. The first is Indian narrow gauge and the other one is standard gauge. However since his death the McAlpine Fawley railway is now open once a month. His collection is magnificent.
Super. An incredible layout. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.
Mr. Mill Brook, you've got me addicted to small trains now. I've been watching your videos for hours now, and then came across this incredible place. Almost too awesome and amazing to be true. Brick Mountain is incredible! And now I'm totally getting into small trains. My grandpa, who worked for the railroad in Norwalk, OH (another ancestor who worked for the railroad helped name Norwalk), is probably dancing in heaven that a grandson is getting into trains. Well at least small trains. This is so cool!
Glad I could help! The Backyard Railroading group on Facebook is a good resource, as is www.discoverlivesteam.com. Just know that some of the prices that some people are asking for used equipment is, shall we say, less than realistic. Some other listings there are closer to reality. Like anything else, you really need to do some research before you buy equipment.
If you want a new locomotive that looks like the Mill Brook 70, we do sell ES-2-500's at millbrookrailroad.com. They are the same thing as Mill Brook 71 and they have a $3900 base price.
"WOW" what I want to know is who built this magnificent Mini-Railway , absolutely incredible, Block signals, grade crossings, tunnels, and huge treadles and bridges. everything you see on a real Rail Road. "HOW "This nothing short of miraculous, the amount of track, the massive construction undertaking is on a epic scale, I can't imagine the cost-$ and there are trains that are dead headed on the side, this must have taken years, and not to mention the amount of property just to build the infrastructure I thought this was in a theme park.
The owner is a tradesman who has done well for himself in a major metropolitan region. I don't know how long it took but I'm fairly certain it's been less than ten years.
We want the ALS video!! Seriously though Brick Mountain looks like an awesome place to visit.
I just finished editing the ALS videos. There are two of them.
Brick Mountain is an electric locomotive killer. I knew the grades were steep before I went, so I left the Plum Cove Generic Electric at home. It would have been useless on those grades with a single car.
omg, the rolling stock.. impressive.. the trestle brigges incredible, thanks for sharing this amazing railroad.. I only discovered you less than a month ago..- and I never knew this kind of hobby existed.. I mean I knew about smaller gauages, and I've seen the mall christmas trains that would be set up.. but not this elaborate set ups..
wow this must be millions of investment.
Glad you enjoyed it.
This particular railroad was a lifelong dream of one of the hardest working people I know. Barry Cone is probably the best HVAC guy in New England. Meticulous in his work both on the job and off, as can be seen around the railroad. His Brick Mountain Railroad represents what can be done on a very high budget. Contrast that with the Mill Brook Railroad, which was built and is operated on a shoestring budget. Shady Pines Railroad has a slightly higher budget and the Stoddard Hill Farm Railway, which is also featured on this channel is somewhere in the middle.
This one was, but not all private backyard railroads are. Most have lower budgets.
Had a lot of fun that day thanks for taking me Padre.
Glad you enjoyed it!
It must be great to take your rolling stock out to stretch its legs like that! Great video, thanks for sharing!
It can be a lot of fun. I felt honored to be invited to this private track. It was a real challenge to run.
@@MillBrookRailroad that's a hell of a playground if it's private! I assumed it was like the one at Train Mountain. If it's a regular occurrence, perhaps you should build something specifically for the job?
Wauu.. That is a very big and long 7.5 gauge railroad :-) Thanks for video. I had subsribe and like too.
Oh wow, That was amazing. I loved it.
That must be one crazy railroad to maintain! :)
Superbe le réseau XXXL !!!! 👏🏻👍🏻
Oui! C'est superbe mais un challenge à traverser.
Awesome 'model' RR! Kudos to the guy who did the scenery!!😉(I'm guessing Sasquatch needs a dimensional-load car?)
Superb, fantastic, incredible, wonderful....name it.
But you know what Aaron ? I just prefer to see your more humane modest little Mill Brook !
Even if Connecticut is more south, imagine your snow plowing the track. Time you´ll finish it will be spring....
Thanks for that visit in that other world
I'll have more videos from home coming up. I thought visiting some other railroads would be a nice change of pace.
@@MillBrookRailroad it was. You learned a lot, about grades and "limit on battery operation. But on that hobby you´re lucky. The worst, if dead you walk or push. Miniature airplane pilots sometimes have worked years to built perfect copy of their Boeing, Airbus... and their flight last less than 5 minutes.
After that, empty fuel tank and....
It took him 6 years to built its 30 feet long Concorde. At full thrust each jet engine sucks 1l of fuel a minute, or equivalent of windshield washer container a minute for the 4. Its joy of flying it is a short one. 5 minutes ! Or you back home with crash, wreck, trash and empty bank account
Your fun last so much longer....
WOW…Awesome layout, very cool place ❗️
WOW!
Excellent video . Great P.O.V. Seen this on other RUclips wish they would have a complete P.O.V. on the 15" railway
Wow.. that's quite the layout. I got so excited I fast forward passed the intro. I was thinking this was your track layout . 😁😁. Beautiful and excellent hobby
My layout is much simpler than this. The Brick Mountain is an amazing railroad.
That place was impressive!
Fantastic layout! Those lead acid batteries not only have sustained oomph, they also provide some get up and go!
They also provide the weight to get traction on those grades.
Awesome
In a word.... WOW!
Very cool
wow this is awesome
Spectacular 🤩👏🏻👏🏻🚂🚃🚃🚃
Man o man I need to come visit this place as well!.
Now that was unbelievable all them trestle bridge loved the tunnel entrance and would most definitely love to see more of that steam locomotive but yeah outstanding best I've seen in the US on here that is. We have many on the same size over here but nothing on the bridge scale. Thank you maybe when you visit or if there is a next time have a chat with them about their locomotives but yeah WoW 👌
“I think I can, I think I can” up those hills!
I honestly had my doubts that it would.
If I had a large enough property, I'd be so tempted to recreate a track and train system, and I'd want to sell tickets for people to ride the flatbed cars for tanning on.
30 minutes one way, 30 minutes the other. That way they don't have to move to get an even-sided tan lol
I'll only have to encourage that kind of project.
INCREDIBLE
That was an incredible railroad. Next time, I'll run it with two engines instead of one.
So the 9.25-inch is close enough to the 7.25-inch in size to just re-truck
the car. that is great. A friend of mine who has passed, modeled E.B.T.
he had a shey engine that was really neat, and narrow gauge cars.
he was Hon2 scale. have a great day and be safe out there.
It's simpler than that. All I have to do is new axles and profile the wheels.
Sorry to hear about your friend. EBT was and is a great little road.
Can’t wait to see you this weekend so I guess your coming up to nh on Saturday for Memorial Day!!! We’ll I see you have seen Barry’s place ABSOLUTLY amazing isn’t ot
Did you mean independence day? I'm just visiting Ossipee for the day on Saturday. I'm only 2 hours and 20 minutes away and Highball is my favorite place for vinyl work.
@@MillBrookRailroad yes I’ll be there I’ll see you lol but you’ll understand when you stop by but yeas I know where you are I’ve talked with you in past
I'm sure of one thing, you had FUN on that trip ! :-)
That's the only track I've run on where I wished I'd had two traction motors in the 70.
Hey, you forgot to whistle at the W sign ! ;)
Very nice network, very nice rolling stock, very nice noises, very nice travel...
The horn in the 70 has been broken for about eight years. I tried to put my lips together and blow but the views took my breath away. :-)
Great railroad. Lots of money and time building it. Too bad the operator passed several red signals even if he was the only train pn the line. But still amazing!!!
Wow! You got that new mainline finished already?
Seems like only a few days ago, we were watching you clear away some greenery along the planned route.
I think you missed the beginning of the video and the title and the description.
@@MillBrookRailroad Did I miss the beginning, or did I choose to ignore it? This is the question that will baffle scholars and confuse future historians. :)
@@martythemartian99 I guess we'll file it under the mysteries of the universe. Along with Sasquatch, Atlantis and how many licks it takes to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop.
How many acres is that property and where is it
I don't know how big the property is and I'm not at liberty to say where it is. It is a private track, open only to people whom the owner invites.
That person has some serious money , to have all of that on his property . That’s insane ! Love it !v
He does have a lot of money, but he works hard for it. He's the guy who keeps central Connecticut cool in the summer.
WOW WOW that place is big I couldn't manage how much time and labor and money to build that place
This railroad took a lot of time and money but the owner invites people over who share his passion for railroads.
wonderfull tremendus bridges
What city and state is this RAILROAD located. And do they allow public visiting. ?
It is a private track in Connecticut, not open to the public. That's all I am allowed to share.
@@MillBrookRailroad Thank you for your response. Well I live in North Myrtle Beach S.C. so too far for me to travel. But we have friends in Connecticut I could’ve killed two birds with one stone. My wife could’ve visit them while I visited the railroad.
Utterly bonkers!!!
Very nice 7.25 ga. RR.
When people talk about having obscure hobbies, they aren’t even remotely as obscure as this. It’s not for me, but it’s pretty interesting!
Interesting how that they use full size single’s and how tall is that bridge looks like around 25 feet or more in some places and it looks like you need to find a way to dubble head the 18 and 70
I think some of those trestles come close to 25 feet up.
M-U'ing the 70 and 18 is a piece of cake. It takes a few seconds to set up.
Taking with the owners nephew and some reach 45 feet east especially one by hells gate bridge
@@chrisrotmanthatguyfromtikt1033 That’s higher than I tbought.
Wow, I can’t even afford to pay attention!
Is that all on his property? That's a lot of land!
It's on a part of his property. He has more.
One "hill" of a railroad! not many railways (if any(, that long in the UK, and certainly none as interesting. You must have ideas for your own track now!
I'm inspired to flatten my grades to less than 2%.
Definitely not in 7¼ inch gauge anyway it Definitely an amazing railway infact model railway wise I can only think of Romney Hythe on Size wise
@@marknewell7355 RHDR is certainly an inspiration for the MLBK.
Was this an old a ride that was left over from many years a go or what ? I truly would like to know more?
It was built the way it is, as a 7-1/4" gauge railroad. The owner is an HVAC contractor in Connecticut.
Someone should call Guiness’ Book of World records or something… 😮😮😮
This isn't even close to the longest, but it might be the steepest 7-1/4" gauge railroad.
!!!!!!!!!!!!Wow!!!!!!!!!!
Would love a video breaking down the construction and wiring of you loco's Im trying to get into 7 1/4" railroading and would love the information.
I didn't even know something Iike this existed and now i want to make one lol any info on how to get started?
Live Steam and Outdoor Railroading Magazine and www.discoverlivesteam.com.
well so was the english live steam 16inch
gauge? looked big!
thank you for your reply.
you are an amazing individual, thank you for
your patience with
me being a laymen
with large gauge
trains. have a great
day.
Gauge being the distance between the rails: English live steam railways can be 5", 7-1/4", 9", 10-1/4" gauge or anything else the builder wants. It starts being minimum gauge at about 15" and narrow gauge closer to 24".
This car, while being 9-1/4" gauge, which is definitely not standard, is the same size as my 7-1/4" gauge 2-1/2" scale flat car, the EBT 105.
Holy crap, how long is this railroad!!! OH the questions I have for this owner if I could meet him.
I think the track is around three miles long. Certainly not the longest railroad I've visited but the steepest, by far.
When it got to 6:30 my jaw dropped
How long is the track? I bet the ballast cost a fortune never mind the cost of the track. It was impressive. 👍🎅🏻
It is about a three mile run.
the cost of those multi layered trestles had to be crazy
sorry on the red trestle what was the track to the left’s gauge ?
it seemed to be twice the 7.25 inch gauge. yes that is a huge
set up. you might really need “sanders” for the engines to
prevent wheel slip. Have a safe ride home!
The track on the left is 16" gauge.
This would be a lot more realistic if you pulled off in a siding for 3-4 hours waiting on Amtrak
Nobody likes that level of realism. Even Amtrak has an optimistic work of fiction, better known as the timetable. lol
that was quite a railroad, crazy money there, I really liked eagle point also, who had more track, brick mountain or eagle point
Which railroad is bigger? Eagle Point, hands down. Brick Mountain has a higher budget, though.
@@MillBrookRailroad thanks for the info eagle point is under 2 hours from me, will have to check it out
@@tomgiorgini9154 Eagle Point is a great railroad with fine people. Go to their website and you'll find a form to fill out if you rant to arrange a visit.
I noticed the bigger wider track , what train goes on that one?
That's for a 16 inch gauge amusement part train that Barry saved from scrap.
What is the other gauge the larger one than you passed
I believe that is 16 inch gauge.
I noticed some of the switch points were aligned against your direction of travel, I guess those are spring switches?
Spring switches are very common.
Dues must be high...?
It's a private, invitation only track. Somehow, I got invited.
Is there 15 inch gauge track next to the 7.25 inch gauge please
That's 16" gauge.
No science in signals if you're not going to go by some kind of rule¿ Like stop and go at a Red¿ Right¿ I understand not wanting to stall, at least slowdown ¿
Hay I'm not criticizing, just saying!
Some of the signals were broken and the traffic was one way only.
I am like number 515
Is this place a club run track or a single person? Whatever that's a lot of time and money...
That's a single person who owns it. He's a hard working HVAC contractor in a heavily populated area and he's really done well for himself. He does have help, though. He has one person on the payroll who just takes care of the railroad and a small group of volunteers.
Quite honestly, I think this is a case of wasted time to re-live your childhood by playing with trains.
Wouldn't your time be better spent if you put the same effort into investing in your community?
You are assuming I don't put time and effort into my community. Nothing could be further from the truth.
