You are not kidding when you say that your body changes! After a long absence on clarinet (picked up the guitar) I could not play a Vandoren BD5 without feeling like I was going to have an aneurysm regardless of reed. Am practicing now on DAddario X0. I've gnawed through a couple of Brillharts in the past. Practicing clarinet is mental and physical exercise for me anymore. Just working for a sound that doesn't annoy the dog.
Thanks again, Cally. I'm one of those people who use their musical equipment forever and adapt to it. I never think about replacing. In fact, I believe I'm still using sax mouthpieces that are 20-30 years old. (Maybe I should reevaluate) The cost of these mouthpieces has increased by at least 150% from their original price years ago. On the flip side, I have several clarinet Vandoren mouthpieces that I work with. Like you, affordability is key for me, and all of these mouthpieces are less than five years old and in excellent condition. I learned a valuable tip today while watching a masterclass. The clinician noticed a small buzzing sound in a player's tone as they attempted to decay into nothingness. They mentioned that this difficulty in holding the tone at this dynamic extreme could indicate the need for a new mouthpiece. Essentially, the small buzz heard during the decay was a consequence of the wear and tear from extended use. I found this perspective quite interesting.
I took 25 years off to raise a family. Foolishly I thought I’d get back to my previous level easily. Thankfully I bought a refurbished Buffet B12 with a Clark Fobes Debut mouthpiece. It has made it easier than the stock mouthpiece. Hopefully I’ll be joining a community band in January when I feel ready.
Okay, so, in my case, the clarinet I got was used before me, and I don’t entirely know how old this clarinet is and how long the same mouthpiece has been used on it, but I will say, as I was testing clarinets, one of them was actually broken, so I don’t know if anything might be wrong with the clarinet itself

Oooo that’s a good tip to know, thank you!
Another alternative is the Backun Vocalise series mouthpieces. I play the G model. It is quite affordable and it plays great!
That's a good one too! Everyone I know who plays on a vocalise sounds great!
