    Im a light/sensitive sleeper by nature. I was supposed to do a 36h fast yesterday. I went to sleep (with a melatonin pill since i knew what may happen) around 11pm and woke up 1.30am. No matter what i did I could not fall back to sleep. I tried sleeping music, tried guided sleeping meditation and also read a book. Nothing worked. So i decided to break the fast with one strawberry and warm oat milk. I fell back asleep around 6:30am and woke up around 11am feeling so sleep deprived that it totally ruined my morning. My heart was pounding strong, had inner trembling and was mentally and physically unrested.
    Ive always slept bad on fasted days, but will do only 24h fasts from now on. Feeling like this and ruining the following day is almost not worth it.

      @@jogoeireno it actually does not cancel out the fast benefits, it’s just a natural by product, but your body has already healed a lot during the fasting days. I’m goong through the same sleepless nights now, and weirdly I don’t feel tired haha

    I recently completed a 36-hour water fast, and I must say, it was an amazing experience. Undertaking such a fast requires careful preparation in terms of consuming the right nutrients and eating well-balanced meals beforehand. After completing my fast, I went for a brisk walk of a couple of miles. However, my legs were feeling weak and sore, so I made sure to refuel my body with nutritious vegetables and lean protein for dinner.
    Given my lean physique, I am considering adopting a new approach to fasting. The benefits of water fasting are truly significant and should not be overlooked. Improved mental clarity and a healthier body are achievable goals for most individuals. Engaging in deep meditation or prayer can greatly enhance concentration during the fasting period.
    Looking ahead, I am eager to attempt longer fasts lasting 20 days or more in the coming years, provided I have the opportunity to do so. I firmly believe that water fasting holds immense potential for overall well-being and I am excited to explore its benefits further.

    I'm happy to get this information as well. I've done two week fasts at least 7 or 8 times and especially during the first 10 days I will wake up in the middle of the night feeling like I have boundless energy. This seems to drop off for me roughly after days 8 through 10.
    I've experimented a bit and if I do nothing but lie in bed I can usually be back asleep within 45 minutes to an hour but I'm quite restless as I feel an urge to exercise.
    Alternatively, I can get in some pretty good workouts just using lighter weight kettlebells than I normally would. When I've done this I end up staying awake for about 90 minutes on average.
    Another very interesting observation is that not only do I need only 6 hours sleep to feel great throughout the day (8 normally) but as soon as I wake up I am clear-headed. Normally I'm foggy minded for at least a minute or so. This is true for every single day that I wake up fasted after about day 2. The clear headedness throughout the day is actually one of the best effects for me.

      Can you give an update on the sleep, energy, and clearheadedness since you posted the comment?
      Seems like I’m experiencing exactly the same things you did. The thing that motivates me so much about fasting is the fact that for the first time in my life I feel like I don’t need coffee, and I’m clear headed, focused and sharp throughout the day.
      Up until I started fasting I was lethargic, and my work and social lives were suffering as a result. This all changed within a couple of weeks!
      Still, the fact that I get little sleep concerns me and I’m interested to know if you are still going through that.

      that 'drop off' is good. It means your dying, not fasting. Try and go a bit further next time for max benefit to us. 🤞

    i had a 72 hr fast in which i caught only 2 hours of sleep during the first 30 hrs, and i was full of energy and mentally sharp all day, as long as i was occupied. i didnt feel sleep deprived. ive felt so much worse fed with adequate sleep.

      I don't fast but eat 500 cals a day for weeks my sleep is tough enough. I got too heavy so I've fasted since mid February. Will have to raise cals eventually very difficult though

      This is my 3rd day (last day) of a 72 hr fast and I can’t sleep at all! I have a terrible headache and I can’t tell if it’s from food/sugar withdrawals or from lack of sleep or both smh

    Thank you for sharing Doctors Attia and Walker.
    BEST SLEEP HACK for me has been walking 60-90 minutes, 4-5 days/week starting close to DAWN - mostly hilly bush-land and I consume around 1 liter of water during this time.
    Since starting I have to go to bed around 8:30pm most nights, asleep with 1-2 minutes and wake up somewhere 4am-5am. Other things include excellent diet of 1-2 meals per day, medium-intense cycling 2-3 hrs 4 days/week, 3-4 hrs resistance training per week, no caffeine/alcohol most days, 2-3 liters water per day and lights out around 8:pm then watch a candle flame in my office until bedtime, however these alone still saw an erratic 4-6 hrs. I'm 62yo, 10% body fat with average GKI of 1. In 6 months, I've gone from obese, very high blood pressure and feeling very old to 120 over 80 with similar well being and physique of my 20s.
    I hope this data may be of use to others.

      @@JasonActualization sleep has adjusted to around 9pm, working on water intake as still wake to pee 1-2 nights a week.

      @@JasonActualization Thank you for sharing, very good point about keeping a bottle of water nearby, I have a dual filter on the kitchen tap for this. I mostly sleep through and only use it once I get up and do stretching exercises to start the day but it's there when I need it. As you say, having water next to the bed makes it far easier to plan hydration, just another thing to help with peace of mind.

    I found taking electrolytes mainly magnesium powder in water really helps me go to sleep and stay asleep. It also doesn’t break the fast or remove its benefits. I personally also need to avoid b vitamins before bed but it’s liquid form in the morning is really nice 👍

    Happening to me right now. 2 days ago I finished my first ever 36-hour fast. Starting the day 1 of fasting, until roght now, my sleep has been almos non existent, but when I wake up, I still don’t feel tired or sleepy or anything. Very weird, but I miss the long sleeping nights though.

    Finally some kind of insightful explanation. I assumed it was cortisol, which may contribute to insomnia as well in my case. I think with any future long fasting (eg. 72 hours) I'll cut back on coffee and focus more on self care to lower stress levels.

      even OMAD/IF absolutely destroys my sleep quality, and drives my IGF1 down to dangerous levels. So I don't fast anymore and I'm back to 8 hours with enough deep and REM sleep

    I feel like I need to add to this. I’ve started fasting 12 hours everyday…just for 3 days. I kept walking up during the night, and I worked up at 4am. I’ve NEVER had this happen because I’m a deep sleeper. So…. This is interesting. I’m kind of tired…but we’ll see how this turns out.

    What does Matt mean around 7:34 when he says that the brain does more in a shorter period of time? Does more of what? Also why is it not sustainable and what are the long term implications of daily intermittent fasting in order to be able to sleep from say 9 hours (of broken sleep) to around seven hours or less of good quality deep sleep?

    Yup. Fasting one meal a day only, 3 months now. Was sleeping 8/9 hrs...now I don't fall Sleep for hrs and only get 3/4 hrs sleep. Why I looked this up. I must say.... I'm functioning ok.... not having fatigue I was having not fasting...so... just get used to it I guess.... I Def do not want to give up fasting. I'm finally losing weight at 57

    Thank you for the informative video, but this doesn’t give us any tips on how to sleep better during a fast. I’m aware that’s Seratonin production is influenced by carbs…. Maybe a certain number of carbs from a natural juice or something…. So if on water fast you’d be breaking it a smidge, but at least a person could keep the carbs lower and stay off of solid food. Those people that email and say they can’t sustain a fast due to poor sleep during a fast are really wanting some sort of advice to take away from this.

      My sense is that you need to up your calories, not the carbs. Do that by healthy fats or nuts.

    I do OMAD for almost a year now
    it is true I go to bed around 9-10 and often wake up around 3am
    BUT man the sleep feel so good. I wake up feel so refreshed
    and my day definitely more energetic despite "low amount" of sleep
    I dont really mind about short sleep anymore, I just take it as more time to do things in the morning
    in fact
    when on days that I eat more than often, my sleep were poor and I wake up way later

    I have only bad experience with fasting. Probably the issue is that I don't have toxins to clean out so there is no reason to sleep, but I tried to sleep to avoid cravings. Fasting sucks overall, but it yet helps with mood (you don't feel that sad in any way, you just hungry).

    I remember Dr. Walker being adamant about the absolute necessity of getting 7+ hours of sleep.
    From this video here, I still don’t get whether he concludes that it’s ok to get less sleep when fasting

    I spent a month preparing for an extended fast. Started the fast yesterday, and couldn't sleep a wink last night, not even 1 minute of sleep. So discouraging, ready to say, the hell with this.

    I restrict heavily as my thyroid is bad 400 calories. That's when my sleep tends to suffer. It's only for a few weeks

      Yeah same I thought that too and that after a while your body would balance itself, you'd start to be able to sleep like a baby and be able to feel more relaxed during the day and any health issues would start to fix themselves.

    Anorexics feel terrific too. Filled with energy. As they starve away. Don't assume you are doing anything good for your body by starving it when it is desperately trying to get you to eat.

      That's interesting, Cathy. I didn't realize anorexics often felt physically quite good. Do you think there are some insights there for people on a five or six day fast who need less sleep?

      Obesity is way more of a problem and is a problem that can be alleviated with fasting.

      I'm not brilliant on 500 cals and can't get above 600 without weight gain. There seems to be insomnia from magnesium deficiency.

      You're absolutely right. Such parameters need to be addressed just incase someone mistakes the benefits from controlled fasts to apply to mistreatment of their body. I have found fasting to be a powerful element in my health plan and it has given me internal strength and knowledge over my unhealthy relationship with food. One of the best things a person can gain from making research a part of their fasts is that they learn to listen to what their body is actually trying to tell them, and they can give it what it needs.

    Serious doubts about Peter Attia's credibility. There are countless authorities on sleep, and he has one on his show with the same message a dozen times -- Mathew Walker. Mathew Walker is a highly political, capitalistic, and controversial speaker on the relationships between sleep and health who is absolutely panned by his own colleagues on a regular basis. Take a look at the literature both in peer reviewed journals and the web. Talk with the CBTi psychiatric community and read online critical reviews. Mathew Walker twists the data to support his own conclusions while making millions from his book and speaking tours frightening people into either taking sleep more seriously or sleeping a whole lot less worrying about it. Shame on Peter! Cherry picking one such controversial "authority" on sleep at the expense of all others betrays your stated understanding of "firm convictions loosely held" which is exactly what drives consulting different perspectives on a topic so essential to longevity medicine. Peter, start asking OTHER professionals on the topic onto your show and live up to the nuance that has otherwise taken your show to the front of the pack. Otherwise, you will wind up being just another popular hack like some many other social media pundits.
