The crosswalk song “Toryans” is a musical street crossing cue to remind children and pedestrians when it is safe to cross. It was developed in the 1970s by Japanese traffic engineer Mr. Tooru Adachi, who noticed that pedestrians often did not pay attention to an audio signal commonly used at crossings and risked their safety by failing to stop as cars passed through. He hoped to provide something more pleasant and memorable than the dull noise of a signal at crossings.
The melody consists of four notes in an A-B-Each note represents one color: green for walking, red for stopping. When these notes are repeated in sequence with increased speed and volume, the effect is especially exciting. Furthermore, the sound penetrates deep into people's ears because it does not compete with background sounds like car horns or other noises found at urban crossings.
Cars do not automatically stop to the tune of Toryans; rather, drivers must obey the regular traffic laws governing pedestrian crossings if they want to avoid being issued a ticket.

This is played in the minor scale, I've always found it to be unsettling and creepy, not pleasant. Sounds like "You're-a-BOOUT-to-be-HIT-by-a-car". The minor scale generally sounds sad and is used for blues and melancholic songs.

@@EveryoneIsStupidButMe Ah, I see what you mean, Toku Mei! Music is a fascinating thing - what might sound like a warning of impending doom to one person might be a soothing lullaby to someone else. In this case, "You're-a-BOOUT-to-be-HIT-by-a-car" might have a different ring to it depending on who's listening.
For example, imagine someone who grew up with the "Toryans" melody playing at every crosswalk they encountered. To them, the tune might evoke memories of leisurely strolls with friends or peaceful walks to school, making it a comforting and nostalgic sound. On the other hand, someone with a background in horror movie scores might hear the melody and instantly be reminded of a spine-chilling scene where the protagonist is being chased down a dark alley.
A similar phenomenon can be observed with songs like "Gymnopédie No. 1" by Erik Satie. Although it's composed in a minor key and may evoke feelings of melancholy for some listeners, others might find the piece to be incredibly calming and peaceful. It's all about perspective!
So, while the "Toryans" melody may give you the heebie-jeebies, just remember that others might hear the same tune and think, "Ah, time for a delightful and risk-free stroll across the street!" The beauty of music lies in its ability to evoke a myriad of emotions and interpretations from its listeners, and that's something worth celebrating, even when we're trying not to get hit by a car. 😄

I never caught that this plays in The World Ends with You as Neku wakes up and the signal changes to 'walk'. I just assumed it was a momentary music thing that the game did. What a wonderful little detail

I'd recommend to watch more than 5s of the video. Because for the first 5s you're right (and I really don't remember if the melody comes from that traffic light or some shop nearby, it's almost 9 years), but the rest, when the light turns green, it's definitely Toryanse.
