A good way I've found to hit a balance between buying computers vs. Prods is that I'll exclusively buy computers from the shops you've mentioned and when I hit a certain computer threshold (I go with 200), I start buying prods from the shops. I've found I always have enough computers in that case and if I hit a period where I'm relicing multiple characters that only need prods, then I'll be able to speed up the process with the shops
