- Tig welding an open root 6G pipe test isn't the easiest thing to learn but it doesn't have to be so difficult. This video teaches you an easy and faster way to learn it like the professionals do it. Of course it still takes lots of practice but this is the easiest and fastest way I know how to learn this process. I'll leave affiliate links for the sleeves and tig rig I used below. Thanks for watching!!!👍

at the shop I work at we have a tolerance of 1/16th of an inch for our roots. the best way I have have found to follow that code is to lay wire the root at around 80-85 amps, hard to tell since I use a foot pedal. I do use the keyhole method you did in video when I work with exotic metals. 308L SS goes in like butter with the lay wire method but 316L is a different story. I have to slow down and really hold my toes and watch the lightning bolt in the puddle wiggle around. When that bolt starts to shack rapidly I know I'm about to blow through. Good looking root BTW.
Thank you I appreciate that. Yeah some places are less tolerant depending on whatever code they are going by.
Yessir you are definitely right about any stainless tig root. On stainless I do a bigger gap to make sure it’s all breaking down good inside and because it’s draws up so much more than carbon steel. Thank you for your comment! I appreciate you watching!👍
@@getweldsoon1113 You speak English with an unusual accent. Are you in California? You kind of sound like one of those surfer sand bums.
@@getweldsoon1113yea i busted cause some shop guy didnt like my 1/8th tack. Outta all my weld tests never busted a tack before
I take this test for my job tm
Great video to learn from
Thank you! I hope you passed and I hope I helped you! Thanks for watching!👍🏻
I got a test tomorrow and I never done nothing like this in my life but I learn extremely fast 😭
Hope your test went well
Well?
How did it go
Looks good man, I'm doing a course now and doing pretty well on 3/4 of the weld but the 6 o clock to 3 o clock movement is killing me, dipping the tungsten every time or have the melting wire falling out
I know it’s obvious but try to concentrate on keeping your tungsten a little further away from the puddle and keep your wire in the puddle so it doesn’t burn off and fall out. Hope this helps.
Great video , what do you use as far as tungsten stick out
Thanks! I normally stick it out a little less than the inside cup diameter. For instance, in the video I used a number 8 cup which is 1/2” inside diameter and my tungsten sticks out about 3/8”. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks for watching!
@@getweldsoon1113 thanks man definitely will try it. Also what would you recommend to get better root reinforcement, all the coupons I've ran I've been able to put a root in it just stays flat on the inside. The people I've asked all say that back feeding will fix that but the times I've tried to I haven't been able to figure it out yet. thanks for replying and the advice man 👍🏻
@@robertogutierrez3593 you’re welcome man. Yes back feeding will help if the gap is big enough to fit your wire inside. If the gap isn’t big enough for the wire to go though then you’ll just have to push more wire to get it to build up a little more on the inside. If the gap is a little tight then it will help to turn your heat up some to push more wire.
Fixing to weld this soon
Awesome! I hope this helps you.👍
@@getweldsoon1113 it does thank you. The shop has handicapped me. Now I'm going for position welds
Good luck man! Let me know if I can help.
@@getweldsoon1113 really appreciate the videos. They are a blessing
Thank you very much.
What's a good setting for root and cap
For the gap I had in the video I run about 120amps. For bigger gaps run a out 90amps. For cap I run 90amps with 3/32” rods.
The other day i got busted for backfeeding, ive never been busted for backfeeding
What?!!! That’s crazy!!! I’ve never heard of that happening.
@@getweldsoon1113 it was weird
And if cosmetics are really an issue with a root, you can always thin the root down on the outside and suck some of that lump back so it looks more uniform on the ID
Yep, you are exactly right. I didn’t do that in the video because the video is more geared toward beginners. I’ll do some videos eventually showing how to fix a bad root pass. Thank you for your comment.👍
How would you do that
Do you have a link for your tig torch?
This is a ck17. It’s the same hose I have but I don’t have the Ck torch in my shop. They are good though. Same size tig torch I normally use. www.amazon.com/dp/B00JV8JSO6/?tag=get weld soon-20
What's the amp on the root run. Hundred
I run about 120amps with that gap but if you are just learning I’d probably turn it down to around 100 with that gap.
What was your amperage on?
I run mine about 120amps.
I can weld with Slot of 1/8 ? Does the Pipe not close?
With 70s wire it does close much just a little. If you are welding stainless or a high grade metal like stainless then you definitely want a bigger gap because it will close a lot more.
hello sir--are those scd 160 coupons ?
Yes I believe so. 120 or 160.
How did you clean the inside
Use an end grinder with a flapper wheel on it. Guess I need to show that in a video. 🤔
I use a steel burr on a drill and it's always worked as well
Yes that works also 👍
Air grinder with burr
You got cold wire on the bottom bud
No sir, it’s broke down just didn’t flow in as well as I’d like. Just left a little lump.
