In my holiday journal a few weeks ago ( • Holiday sketchbook tip... ) , I showed you an image transfer I'd done and innocently said, would you like to see how to do it? Well, the resounding answer was yes, so here it is: How to do an photo transfer from a laser printer using mat gel medium.
There are so many films about how to to do image transfers that I wondered how to make mine a bit different or more useful to you, so I have showed you how to integrate an image transfer into a mixed media piece, using watercolour, modelling paste and a few other things besides. If you only want to see the transfer, just watch the first part and if you want to see how I created this celebration of the Tyne Bridge in my art journal, grab a cup of tea and watch the whole thing... I am doing this in a journal, but of course you could use all thes techniques and do them on paper or canvas to create a painting.
The process is super simple - writing it makes it sound complicated:
Reverse your photo using whatever photo app you like
Manipulate the photo if you want - I posterised it and changed the colour
Put gel on the page and on the print
Place the photo on the surface and press it down
Let it dry
Wet the back with water
Rub off the paper
Coat with more gel medium to avoid a film of paper clouding the image
I love transferring images - it feels a little bit magic. Of course you could just stick the photo down and collage on the paper, but it is great to be able to transfer the image seamlessly with no sign of how you did it. . I think I might be a little bit addicted and want to transfer onto canvas next (stay tuned) - if you want to see that experiment, let me know too.
Every week I share a tip, trick or technique I wish I had known when I started painting, so if you enjoyed this please like, comment and subscribe. Or if you have a watercolour problem, let me know and maybe I can help?

I've done it with wood glue on wooden panels, canvas, and old chipped plates. You can then varnish it with paper varnish and seal it. It works best if you can do it in one layer, so if you want multiple images and text, make a collage first, copy it and flip it before transferring.
That’s a good tip and makes sense. Thank you!
Newcastle is my local city and I adore the bridges. I really love what you've done with them. The rusty red also reminds me of the Angel of the North 5 miles away.
Loved seeing tge Angel of the North too
Beautiful composition, full of harmony. Bravo.
Many thanks!
Wonderful video, thank you so much for sharing the process Liz! Outstanding and very beautiful sketch! 😀
Thanks so much! 😊I have just done a film about image transfer onto canvas, so that will come out next week I think
Ooooooh, thanks for that idea, Liz! I was painting at an arboretum yesterday and a classic car drove by me on the ring road. I think I am going to use this method to add the car!
I love the way this turned out in your journal. You are really adding some great spreads to it. I know I will be unable to hold back much longer before I dive into one myself. I seem to have been hoarding blank sketchbooks lately so I have plenty of surfaces and ideas now 😊
That's a great idea and I was skeptical about journaling until I started!!
Ohh wow that’s gorgeous & very vintage industrial looking artwork!! Thanks for sharing this wonderful technique of image transfer & mixed media techniques & textures. This looks like so much fun to try!! 🥰💕
it really is such a fun way of working!
Really love the industrial feel of this! The way the rusty reds balance the grey works so nicely!
it’s a simple colour palette, but it works!
I love how this page turned out!!
I had a lot of fun creating it!
Thanks for this in depth tutorial with all the tips and tricks! BTW your haircut is very flattering! 😍
glad you enjoyed it! And thank you…I’ll tell my lovely hairdresser 😊
I am so inspired by your image transfer technique and how to incorporate it into your sketchbook. Your finished piece is wonderful - thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome! I had such fun with this
Totally inspired!! I really enjoyed listening to your thought process as you were working... Fabulous, thank you!!
Thank you so much! It is a really fun process
That was a great tutorial Liz, especially as you showed what can go wrong and how to fix it (or not). Your finished painting is gorgeous and I’m sure your friends in Newcastle would love it. 🥰
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just love your artjournal page!
I was really pleased how it turned out too 😊
Love, love that, should be a large one !!!!
I was thinking of doing one on canvas, but maybe Sydney Harbour bridge....
This is such a wonderful, inspiring tutorial, Liz - thank you so much for sharing these great techniques!

Thank you, it was most helpful.
I really like image transfers
Wowza. Liz thank you so much for doing this. I never knew about image transfer and today was doing my journal and thinking I wished there was some way to incorporate a photo of people. And now I know there is!! Brilliant. I love your nod to industrial collage too. Fabulous piece.
Oh, that is so good! I really liked including us in my journal and I am a little addicted to these transfers.
You are really just so amazing and have the best ideas which you convey so wonderfully! Thank you!
gosh! Thank you!
How wonderfully adventurous and the results are fantastic! I have a much better understanding of the purpose of journaling and will try this technique and others from now forward! Love your videos and would love to learn online with you.
That’s music to my ears! You can see my current courses at www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk I keep adding!
Thank you!
This is excellent! So glad you randomly popped up on my "things you might like" feed! :)
I started drawing about a year ago, and have really got into art (a bit late, admittedly, I am 29 and sometimes wish I had started this journey earlier). Painting originally put me off art, when I was younger. I find it hard, and never could produce anything good enough to encourage me to continue. I was told that art was only realism and paint, and it took me until last year, to discover colouring pencil and digital art to learn that art is anything I want it to be, and my confidence has slowly been improving as my skills improve, and that in turn I am feeling better about trying new things/mediums. For the first time in my life, after years of depression, I feel like I have a purpose and goal in life, and that's now to become an illustrator and/or sell my art as prints.
...But back to the topic of this video (😅), you have made me want to try painting again! And I've always wondered how people do that transfer thing! I want to try it so bad! :D
I also love your tone of voice, so relaxing, and your personality, you made me smile multiple times with your words - I don't know if you are a teacher, but I sure wish you had been mine! :)
Thank you for uploading this, and providing me with inspiration! :)
29 is not late! I’ve had 70 year olds tell me about teachers putting them off art when they were at school and they’ve finally faved their fear. Creating something unique, whether paint, pencil or digital or baking a cake, is a wonderful part of being human. Experimenting is such fun. What’s the worst 5hat can happen? You’ve messed up a bit of paper, but learnt and had fun in the process. Good luck with your art journey.
Absolutely smashing 🔥
Thank you!
Thanks so much Liz!
You are so welcome!
That is sensational, how you come with these ideas is amazing. I love your work Liz!❤
Thank you! 😊 I am so enjoying mixed media and seeing what you can do still using my beloved watercolour
Great, Liz
it’s such fun!
My mind is blown. Amazing!
Give it a go. it is such fun!
Oh my goodness, just when I thought we'd seen all of your supplies...more come out of the woodwork (or wherever they've been hiding!😁). But once again, you put them to good use! I love those stencils and the spattering and the colors you used...yeah, everything about it!
I was all ready to order some matte gel and try the image transfer, but alas - I have an ink-jet printer! I'm so disappointed!
There has to be a way with an ink jet printer, so let me research and experiment!. I am so getting into mixed media and it does allow me to use supplies which I’ve had for years and never touched 😊
That would be fabulous, Liz! @@LizChadertonArt
Thanks for another very helpful video! 😊🍂🍁🍂🍁🍂
You are so welcome!
Wonderful!
Glad you think so!
You can water color on top of a transfer like that if you use clear watercolor ground. Daniel Smith makes a clear, watercolor ground.
yes! Schmincke do a transparent ground too.
I absolutely love this technique. I’m going to try it. What is your journal?
I made the journal myself. Here the film: ruclips.net/video/2wF5Nqb3P34/видео.html
I had seen somewhere I can use mod podge? Have you tried that?
I guess this would be a good reason for me to start using the huge laser jet printer I was given last year from a neighbor who actually moved to the UK. I’ve just been too lazy to try and start learning how the thing works..🤷🏼♀️
I haven’t used Mod Podge, but as long as it is waterproof I think it should work. I am going to research inkjet techniques…. have fun with the printer 😊
Ah, you've come to the north! I love the bridge, it's wonderful in daylight and at night. Your rendition is fantastic. I'm guessing you made a laser print for the transfer? Tks Mx
it was a laser print. I have in mind an experiment to compare ink jet and laser…..
@@LizChadertonArt OK, thanks. It doesn't seem to work on inkjet...
I’ll take a look@@margaretpinsent6388
Loved watching this. What were the gorgeous colours you used to extend the orange background?
I just mixed up a bit of this and that. I’m sorry, but I can remember exactly what.
Just wondering what type of laser printer do you have .
a Brother DCPC3550CDW….. what a snappy name 😆 as selected by my husband, but I don’t know on what criteria
Thanks Liz. Now to find a laser printer that prints in colour.
you can use black and white. it looks great. or if you have an inkjet, If you Google image transfer with inkjet, you’ll get guidance.
I have tried this and have a fair bit of trouble with getting all the paper off. Perhaps it depends on the kind of paper it's been printed on? It's fun though!
maybe you have better quality paper?
Is there any alternative to the mat gel? Lovely video btw!!!
some people use waterproof pva/ white glue. I haven’t tried it, but you could give that a go.
And where did you get that wonderful stencil?
Looks like Morse code
yes it does. If I remember it was on Temu. I have quite a stash of them!
@@LizChadertonArt ah! The dreaded Temu.
Ooh, interesting comment. Have you had a bad experience? For me It’s no more dreaded than Amazon@@annepercival7814 I’d be interested to know how you’ve found it.
