Small tree stump removal

  • I found this the most effective way to remove small tree stumps (conifers) in my garden. Having already removed 4 stumps I now had it down to a fine art.
The long chisel / digging bar and fencing maul are very effective tools and helped save me a lot of time. Note: be careful where you place your feet and legs when using these tools!

I've taken up a lot of small stumps that size just using a mattock. One end of the mattock would cut the roots right through and the other end digs and pry's on the stump.

Wish I had seen this two days ago when I removed a similar sized stump...took me two hours!!! That chisel tool is the best!

A good job well done there fella 👍
I have maybe 60 overgrow hedging conifers to remove over the next 2 winters and, while I was daunted by the prospect, I can now see that with appropriate tools, patience and dogged determination, I’ll get there 😊

Great video, this is about how I would always dig out my stumps. But then I bought a reciprocating saw and a few wood cutting blades of varying lengths. Still hard work, but I just use my saw on most of the buried roots. Buy the warranty on the saw, cause it gets pretty dirty and may not last as long for this purpose, but what a difference really.
One more tip: If you use a cordless reciprocating saw, get the 6 Ah battery, and you will still burn through it quickly. So if you have a really big job or many stumps, get corded.

I tried the recip saw method and it's a lot less backbreaking than digging and cutting.

I used a sawsall and removed twelve by myself. Just circled around the outside of the stump and the sawsall sliced the roots like butter.

Fair plays. I think if I had that many stumps to cut through, I probably would have invested in something similar. The tools I to hand in my shed already proved sufficient for removing the several stumps I needed rid off. That's good you used a tool that proved effective though x.

Nice. I'd probably use a Sawzall for most of the hard stuff.

Shovel / sawall / 12 inch new landscapers blade. Job done in 5 minutes.
I seen it on youtube and did it.

Just use an angle grinder and a wood carving disk. So much faster and you can use the mulch/sawdust to fill the holes back in.

Axes are for cavemen. I use a reciprocal saw with a 12" landscape blade. Much easier and quicker.

Fair enough comment. Was using the tools I had to hand. But will keep in mind your idea for future reference 👍

Thanks Mark. The 'long chisel/digging bar' is a beast of a tool. Cuts through the roots with little effort.

It looked like the stump you were working on in the video did not have much of a tap root? Am I correct? I have the issue with first finding where exactly it is and then having the space to cut it.

    • @beyo124
      @beyo124  2 года назад

Good point. Most trees don't have tap roots. Only a small percentage do. Most trees produce water seeking and feeder roots that sprawl outwards.

I dig out my roots about as far as he does. The difference is, afterwords I fill the hole with natural lump charcoal and light a match. The stumps burn down to ash, then I backfill the hole. It makes good fertilizer for the next tree/plant to take its place.

Well done ! I've got 2 conifers to remove ,should I try cutting the roots first and then removing the tree with it's roots ?

Thanks for your comment. We were fortunate to have our conifers cut down with a chain saw by the individuals putting up the fence. In regards to the stumps, some people have commented that they prefer to cut the roots with a reciprocal saw first. I just tackled it the way I did with the tools I had to hand as per the video. But it's really six or half a dozen. Either way should do the job. Good luck. Hope it goes well
