I thought about that too, that, in the middle of the riots, Ned took the oportunity to kill his wife. Or that it was just an attempt to frame him and Flanders knew that Internal Affairs was trying to set him up. Both options seem plausible to me.

That reminded me of an episode where all of the Springfield's citizens gathered up and built a new house for Ned Flanders. But when he was passing down the corridor it was getting more and more narrower. That was hilarious.

Maude Flanders actually died when Homer fired a t-shirt gun, hitting her square in the chest and in the process, accidentally breaking her neck. She was NOT murdered in a break-in.
Homer didn't fire the tshirt gun he wanted a shirt making a bullseye on his stomach then bent down cause something caught his eye and maude who was right behind him got pleted with a t-shirt. That episode aired a lot as a kid growing up.
