- Due to overwhelming demand, we're pleased to announce a repress of I DREAM OF WIRES: HARDCORE EDITION, our independent documentary epic exploring the history, demise and resurgence of the ultimate electronic music machine - the MODULAR SYNTHESIZER. Available to order now from our new SCIENCE WITH SYNTHESIZERS webshop: www.sciencewith... and coming soon to other select retailers.
I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition is a companion to the forthcoming feature-length documentary, I DREAM OF WIRES. An alternate/extended cut, the Hardcore Edition is 4 hours in length, custom made for hardcore modular synthesizer and electronic music fanatics. Originally intended as a limited edition pressing, available exclusively to IndieGoGo and pre-order customers, interest and demand for the Hardcore Edition has surged since copies were shipped in August 2013. It seems that a 4-hour documentary about modular synthesizers isn't as niche as we thought! While 4 hours may seem excessive, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, which has only reinforced our own feelings that the Hardcore Edition is a fun and compelling watch - one that deserves to be seen by a wider audience.
I Dream of Wires: Hardcore Edition includes an exclusive, lengthy historical primer, exploring the early development of modular synthesizers from pioneering companies Moog Music Inc. and Buchla and Associates. From there, we find out what's happening now: the phenomenal resurgence of the modular synthesizer - exploring the passions, obsessions and dreams of people who have dedicated part of their lives to this esoteric electronic music machine. What started out as a "vintage-revival scene" in the '90s has grown into an underground phenomena with a growing market of modular obsessives craving ever more wild and innovative sounds and interfaces. Today, the modular synthesizer is no longer an esoteric curiosity or even a mere music instrument, it is an essential tool for radical new sounds and a bona fide subculture.
Interview subjects include musicians and producers Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Gary Numan, Vince Clarke (Erasure), Morton Subotnick, Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle), Daniel Miller, Carl Craig, Flood, cEvin Key (Skinny Puppy), James Holden, Factory Floor, Legowelt, John Foxx and Bernie Krause, as well as manufacturers and modular industry leaders Doepfer, Modcan, Make Noise, Intellijel, Metasonix, Synthesis Technology/MOTM, Muffwiggler Mike and Andreas Schneider.

2:50 Nose control technique ! ^^
My kids are my synths so I shall buy shoes for my synths.
6:40 i definitively have more gear than i need.
A realm where on man can take the place of an entire band or an entire symphony even. Never having to deal with creativity clashes or personal issues with other band members. Where all your energy can be put to creativity. Not locked in a world of conventional instruments and as they said not needing any musical background. Able to be creative in art without knowledge of a single chord or brush stroke and can be just as visual as looking into a painted masterpiece. My slice of Heaven. ;0)
Got the DVD! ..so cool! Great stuff indeed..
I love the shots of the Synthi AKS. I have one of these sitting in one of my closets for years.
they are offering the 4 hour version til the end of May for Pre-order - better grab it now.
I want to hear full lossless versions of every song that was being played in this video. Ahhhhhhh
buy it on BlueRay (I did) - but they may also be selling it on line as well. Never looked.
2:35 this is amazing, is there a full version available somewhere?
Hello...the one at 00:52 is a test signal generator, not a synth but was the common type of oscillator used in very early electronic music...at 1:24, we have a collection of early Metasonix vacuum tube based pedals/modules...they are now available in Eurorack format.
I immediately discontinued my porn membership after watching this.
+pangpengmaster People still pay for porn?
Welcome to the NEW porn. (actually - it's been mine for decades)
Why not both? Try running the audio from some awful, small town amateur porn from the 80's (the more horribly produced, the better imo) into an audio input on your modular. When I inevitably get a video synthesizer, I plan on taking existing porn, and deconstructing it into something completely and utterly unrecognizable, lolz! 😂
@@sleslie23 Of course, why people wouldn't ?
Now THAT is a quality trailer. Can't wait for the complete docu. Respect!
I like that this is all happening again, but with visual art, with things like Artbreeder, deepart, or VQGAN+CLIP.
I didn't miss the words. I watched it only once. The transition totally made sense to me, and I thought it was perfect.
Amazing every of this artists evolve and grow with their instrument. Every of them has their unique specific set of sound waves which they crafted by many years of experimentation. Beautiful.
@suitandtieguy haven't forgotten about the idea of setting up some remote interviews as discussed... STG + same goes for Make Noise + Richard Devine. so we'll be in touch about this at some point... btw, the track starting from 6:50 that ends the doc, is done by me & is part of my Wave Shaping demo for the film - makes heavy use of my Eurorack STG Wavefolder module
Damn! Seem to have missed the deadline for ordering this.
Love seeing Mort talk. I remember talking with Edgar Varese when he said that the music of the future would be composed in kids' garages. - Serge Tcherepnin
totally amazing , i have to see the whole movie :)
I had a "Synthgasm" watching that. And I thought I was obsessed with cables and gear.Simply amazing
excellent by the way, hope it all works out for you
I could watch this for hours. Any thoughts about doing a full length docu? Nice hit tip to Mr Webb in the title.
thanks! yes want more...
Looking forward to the film! Please ask Don Buchla to give an interview!
"Subotnick" has to be the coolest last name ever.
...the test signal generator was made by General Radio, probably in the 1960's, it is commonly used to create a reference signal in audio testing and laboratory work unrelated to music, but they were used by composers in the early days as a source of sound, as Mr. Subotnick explains in the clip just before...eventually, they were replaced by voltage controlled oscillators, Moog's being one of the earliest.
Can't wait for the whole documentary!
Nice reminder of where we started with synthesis. I love the sound possibilities, but didn't pass my physics exam!
I'm poor.
And I am hungry.
+red cat I am poor and hungry!
Brilliant. can't wait!
Yes...Richard will be in the film...there will be an interview segment with him posted on Mutek TV in a week or so...
Hello...thank you for the feedback! Actually, Mr. Subotnick was describing that his first oscillator could give you two different waveforms, square and sine wave, and it had a knob you could turn to vary the pitch...that was then followed by an example of such...it was a quick sentence and one could easily miss his exact words.
Hi Keletho...the song you hear is part of the original soundtrack for the film...composed by SOLVENT!
Bruce Duncan has it right. It's the user interface that is the best part about using a modular, at least for me. Yes the sound can be great, but the hands on, tactile nature of man and machine is so powerful and invigorating.
Awesome! Can't wait to watch the whole thing!
Todd Sines! Good to see him in a doc.
Wow, awesome! Nice HD photography btw...
I can't wait to see this, I want to watch it at a cinema!!!!!!
Hello...that is Andrew Kilpatrick of Kilpatrick Audio!
CANT WAIT!
Good luck with your documentary!
ANALOG RULES! Yes love it soo much..amazing video ^_^
im sorry, I always find this HILARIOUS!.....Im cracking up! but on a serious note I wish the dude that created this would've finished it in full length...... love analog, great vid
That's the beauty of the thing!
TERRIFIC! Great film, great interviews, even great motion graphics for the title logo.
3:06 Those modulators, I like there names!
Amazing it can all be done on an iphone now!
Morton Subotnick is a hero to many in the synth world. I have boxes of eico tube oscillators so I know what he's talking about.
this is similar group of people to audiophiles. The iPhone music download crowd will never understand this, because convenience is not what drivers analog synth buffs or audiophiles. I am not able to afford analog synthesizers or audiophile level gear, but I highly respect these people and I am glad that they are around. Without them the only variety would be only iPod, iPhone, or iPad. I haven't by the way adopted any touch screen device yet, and people think I am crazy.
i think im gonna go play with my modular now
Can hardly wait for this to come available on DVD !!! Stellar Promo. :-)
Fantastic atmosphere.
.
Let’s geek out
Actually you can use VSTs with reason as Massive is a vst and is used quite often with it. Also Via rewire you can connect it to any other recording software and is compatable with all the major names on the market. I am not a reason user myself but I know what it is capable of and just like analog gear it can be your best friend or worst enemy.
Great documentary theme! I had the honor to meet the deep knowledgeable Miss Lori through a great friend of ours, Sargent. Very inspiring documentary, specially in a World dominated mostly by expendable mainstream type of art. Respect.
Hello channing789, that song, as with the comment below, is part of the film's original soundtrack...no name for it yet, but it will be released as part of a full length recording by SOLVENT, once the film is complete...hopefully sometime this coming September! It is, indeed, sick, as you say!
Wow, very awesome! Excellent job on the quality! I look forwards to to getting the DVD! :-)
What was that lovely electro-mechanical job at 0:45???
2:58
That isn't really why I want one, but it surely doesn't hurt!
Fortunately, I have access to a modular system at school (Moog/E-mu/Doepfer) three hours per week. It is always the highlight of my week!
Love it! Looking awesome already. Now, all you electro/synth/modular geeks out there, go help fund the project!
Thank you for that, it´s gonna be amazing film, I´m pretty excited :D
this looks very interesting. my dad used to scare the shit out of me as a kid with Morton Subotnick's raging bull.
these guys are tough on the software world.
I love that this vid has over 100k views!
This looks like it's going to be a great documentary
I don't know how I got here.. But I'm glad I did.
Hello...thanks for the feedback, this little clip is simply a trailer for the film, which is going to be feature length and paced accordingly. I cut this trailer primarily to attract interest in the project and to grab the attention of potential interviewees and distributors, as such, it moves along quite quickly. I'd suggest you watch some of the extended interview videos we've posted to get a taste of the pacing and editing style more in line with the eventual film.
good work! this looks great!
i really wish i could try this some time
Great video, thanks
Indeed, I like to bridge the old and the new but I like it old school.
In short, it's fun to press a button that makes a cool noise, and play with it all day long.
tasty synth info with great images ..4 knobs up!
dang... wish you guys had hit your goal. really cool and inspiring video. thanks
Fantastic demo! I want to see the rest!
2:36 love itt!
very pretty machines
The film is set for release this June...
Totally awesome...can't wait to see it! Will you be going directly to DVD, or shopping it around the festival circuit for a while first?
the beauty of it! :) . I'm getting into modular, after i tried it out at my friends studio.
I can't afford what i'm getting, but im always getting it.
I can eat rice and drink proteinshakes for a whole year, IT IS WORTH IT!
very cool!! uncle!!
I want to see this, looks interesting, but it also looks like softsynths and digital keyboards are easier to work with.
Looks more impressive than the Moog docu. from a few years ago, which was ok but not great as it thought it was. I am glad there's hopefully going to be more (any) focus on European synth-makers and musicians (as good as north Americans are)
Yes
Yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaah modularmovie.....let the drooling start.
@theprstc
Yes, Malcolm has been on the top of my list for a while, we are working hard at it...
oh lord, please forgive us our synths
cool video. many thanks
Am I to understand this right... but the "Hardcore" version of the movie is the same movie... but with the extra 2 hours of footage?
Emerson, genius
Oh that's pretty cool, is the film ready? I would like to watch it because I don't have any monologs but I really want one
Thanks!! I will smile all day now :-D
@VJFranzK was about the say the same thing! everything is on point!
How could this synth documentary be set for a June 2013 theatrical release, when we're watching the whole film right now?
@GaEbBo
That is an original piece by SOLVENT, who is creating the original soundtrack!
My god, I'd travel great distances just to play that Buchla good sir. Oh, and if any of you nerds are interested there is an amazing semi-modular Buchla inspired VST out there called Aalto for Mac/Windows to try for free.
Please visit our website for details...the film was released over a month ago.
Was Joel Zimmerman the man that bought the big Modcan modular, then had to move into a bigger house?
It sure looks better than it sounds.
"I always say...to leave some money, to buy your children some shoes." LOL
