This isn't the year of the musical for some stupid reason. I love the fact that Vanessa Hudgens is more of a background singer in this movie than having a big character talking scene in the movie. And she managed to steal every scene she's in because of her singing, good for her
I honestly hoped that her character would end up as his girlfriend, her singing "Why do we stay with lovers, who we know down deep just aren't right?" and both of their connection to each other throughout the whole movie had my hopes up. The bull's eye this song (and even more so the movie) hits is how well it reveals the artist's dilemma: security or fulfillment? Which would you pick if you can only have one? And how do you keep going when you have neither?

He was a genius at earworms. Seasons of Love (525,600 minutes part especially) is one. I had it stuck in my head and was singing it a lot then my 9 year old grandson caught himself singing it and told me to stop it grandma. LOL, never too young to be introduced to musical theater.

The ending gets me every time. Instead of “words” it’s the piano keys. It’s so bucking profound and poetic. Also, the vocals! Andrew you are an angel of a singer. CAN WE TALK ABOUT REPEATING THEMES THO?? Like, I've noticed that there are a lot of repeating theme's in Jonathan Larson's music, and themes that are shared throughout not just his individual musicals but in ALL of his music, which I just think is super cool and a fun little detail that you notice once your looking for it. Anyway, the point of this little rant is that I realized that this song has the main notes from I Should Tell You from Rent playing underneath and I nearly cried thank you for coming to my ted talk.
Everything about this song from some of the hooks and chord progressions, to the lyrics, to the overall message&tone, it's easy to see how it was a direct ancestor to RENT. Outstanding.
