this came in good time. I bought a steamer a year ago and never used it. I'm glad you said distilled water because I would have just used tap water. I have 2 curtain panels that I want to steam out the wrinkles. Great motivation.
Jennifer Ann Fox I just took my out of the box as well and I bought my over a year and half ago. I would have used tap water as well. So I agree that this is a great video and I'm getting ready to try it in a few minutes.
She made perfect sense and I am embarrassed I was spitting water all over my clothes and tap water at that. Thanks for teaching me how to stream my clothes at 37 LOL
Melissa, I have read some of the comments and they are dead wrong. I used my OXA which I have had in the box for a year and a half. I can't believe how easy it was to use. Thanks for the tutorial. I literally just used it on curtains I just made for my new apartment. It worked like a dream. Thanks alot. I gave thumbs up and will subscribe. Thanks a lot.
Great tips. I've been steaming my clothes for years the wrong way. I never thought to use distilled water. I guess that explains why I need to keep buying steamers. Thanks for the great tips.
I appreciate the tips on how to steam the right way. I didn’t know you don’t have to touch the garment with the steamer head to get no creases. Thank you.
I bought a steamer thinking I would save time from traditional ironing. Not only do the clothes stay somewhat wrinkly, but I constantly burn myself, and it takes easily about 5 times longer than it would with an iron. What a terrible idea of mine and what a waste of my time and money. Back to the iron it is.
I find steaming to be much easier and quicker personally. Ironing for me ironically introduced many wrinkles and was quite aggravating. Perhaps you didn't find the right technique?
Melissa, I love youj, respect you, and need you, but demonstration makes a good video. I don't have a garment steamer, I have never SEEN a garment steamer, and I have never seen anyone USE a garment steamer, either. We iron. For hours! Sometimes all day on Saturday! ALL DAY ! So it would help if you would actually show a few garments and how to steam them: a wool suit or winter wool slacks - what about the lining? a silk blouse? shirts and dresses that got wrinkly in the closet altho already ironed....silky nighties, linen shirts, etc. Not just talk about it. Please. I hate ironing, but love summer cottons. But how? Will the collars pull at the corners? How can you get the button placket to lie flat? etc.
I have never used distilled water. I have a few different steamers, which I use in a variety of ways, and tap water has never caused any issues! I find Joy Mangano's steamer to be useless, not matter what type of water is used.
I bought a steamer a couple years ago, thinking it would be easier than ironing. I found it took much longer and was less effective than ironing. And 6 inches away? The steam rises into the air by then. Steamer heads are made smooth so they can touch the fabric. For delicate fabrics you can hold it maybe 1 inch away. This is advised in several other videos on this topic.
Thank you for sharing! I've always considered investing in a garment steamer, but I never knew what to look for. Are garment steamers that different from each other?
what sort of room do you use it in? We live in a damp climate and mould is an issue here. Thanks for the tips - steaming extra on a specific area and using essential oils. That's great.
I just wish in a few years from today we will look back at all the time humans wasted on ironing or steaming clothes and laugh, happily, with more time to spend on other things because technology made clothing unwrinklable.
The problem I have with my steamer is I cant get the wrinkles out the bottom of my t shirts because I can't hold it tight unless I want to melt my fingers off
@Melissa Maker Conair should hire you to write their instruction manuals. The people in charge, obviously have no sense of reality. If they had, they would have included all of this in the manual. I'm keeping mine instead of returning it as I intended because of you. I really appreciate, thank you so much. Conair should not just thank you, but give you a job!
My steamer has a crease attachment but I’ve not figured out how to use it. It’s a Rowenta DR82 C-Cel Steam Force. Can you do a product review? I love the steamer itself, but I need to know how to use the crease attachment for pants.
My current iron has a peeling teflon plate and a busted steam function. It just left a small stain on a blouse that I just made. When searching for advice online about a new iron this video came recommended. Could you use a steamer like this to remove wrinkles on a 100% cotton poplin blouse that has lots of gathering on the sleeves, and pintucks on the front? I would still need to buy a new iron but it took me ages to iron the thing so perhaps steaming is quicker.
I would guess that steaming might blur pleats and creases (as in dress pants) meant to look sharp, but might be okay for gathering, whose gathers are stitch ordained; ditto pintucks.

I suspect reverse-osmosis water is close enough to distilled to be useful in this setting. It's more expensive, but if you don't use this very often it's probably not a noticeable cost - and it potentially saves you an extra trip to the store.
A 2 in one steam iron is way better than those weak little handheld steamers. Steam irons blast out the steam and you don't even need to keep the clothes taught. The small ones are only good for travelling.
Thanks for says not all clothing can be streamed. I have been trying to steam my cotton and linen white shirts. Its not working. I thought having a steamer would eliminate me getting out the iron and board. So suppose its good for freshing some things up, but not good for jeans and linens.

You don't have to use destilled water. And if it gets chalky years from now, just clean it with some household vinegar, it's super easy.

I made a mistake of using tap water at the start, what is the best way of cleaning the water container?
Use DV to clean. Same method as a coffee maker.
whats dv?
distilled vinegar
Distilled water is not needed. I have hard water, and it has never caused buildup or chalky residue in my steamer.

The build up is just lime scale. Also called hard water. Not disgusting but not great for our machine if not regularly cleaned.
