      During normal business hours, a bank or a gun store could do in a pinch. (Some towns don't do a good job of pointing you to the police department or fire department.) Both have generally good security, and Darwin gladly sorts out the people stupid enough to try to start violence in either one.

      Ive called ahead to the sheriff department and explained i was being either followed or road raged and was heading towards their station before and gave my car type and what I could of the guy behind.
      They pulled him over and had me, as I was still on the phone continue to the station. Apparently I looked like his girlfriend who has the same type car as I did and he was drunk and they had been fighting. 🤦‍♀️ but oof! Scared me.

    My daughter, a small lab owner, had a new customer demanding to see the owner. My daughter said she would get the owner, turned and walked into the office. She stayed about a minute and then walked back out and said, "I'm the owner and you can leave, we will not be doing any work for you". The customer's husband called and begged us to do their work. We did for a few times but they got behind in paying. We held up test results until they paid and refused to do any more of their work after that.

    My mom owned a condo on the beach. A swimming pool was in front of the condo community. During Hurricane Hugo, a two-story pile of broken pilings was dumped on the pool which was also full of sand. After the pilings were cleaned up, workers began to shovel out the sand. During the next high tide, the pool began to float upwards. Lots of horrified screaming from the workers, and the concrete broke apart. They were never able to replace it.

    I thought the water tank idea was a good one, but poorly executed. You can buy them second hand cheap (not that he needed to) and due to its shape it would make a perfect "central hub" where you could have rooms leading off from it (attach shipping containers?). The problem with a water tank is that it's built to hold water in and not hold earth out, but all that would be needed would be internal bracing and reinforcement (along with proper painting, ventilation and burying in concrete etc etc). I thought the story would lead to it crumpling in on itself, not floating lol. Ah well.

  • @CurtisDrew1
    @CurtisDrew1 3 года назад +2

    So Jim buries a big cork under his house and is suprised whrn it's suddenly underwater, it floats!
    Had he gotten an Engineer to olan it, I'm sure they could have factored in a better way to make his cork into a boat anchor. I live not far from Southern Oklahoma across the border and our dirt is on;y 4 feet deep here. After that, it's solid rock for about 10 feet minimum. Our storm shelters/ root cellars are buried and bolted to the rock base then covered over with dirt a couple of feet over the top. Yeah, they are big ugly mounds behind the house, but a proper below the rock shelter woudl eat up his $2 Mil fast.. A few have some rolling hills and can bury one against a hill, which works a little better. But flatlanders mound their Root Celllar roofs so the mower can still mow over the top of it. Entertains the kids when they have to drive the riding mower.

    • @larrykeenan598
      @larrykeenan598 3 года назад

      If they had poured a concrete floor in the bottom of the tank it probably would have not floated. But then, it would take an engineer to factor in how much weight would be needed to hold down the tank. Weight of concrete per yard, number of yards, etc. Pour it with a high slump, and it would about level itself.

      @@cindydott452 Probably, or driving a pylon or two down to bedrock and attach it to those. But even still, his idea was idiotic, in that he put it directly under the house. If he was smart, he would have placed it away from the house, with a concrete drainage pipe between the trap door, downward passageway, and the bunker, as well as have a secondary exit, such as to a decorative wishing well or something, also using a drainage pipe as a tunnel. The reason for that is if the house burned down or was destroyed by tornado, the rubble would be on the only exit (the trap door). If no one knew they were there, they'd be trapped for who knows how long. In some areas where natural disasters have occurred, it has taken months or even years to clear debris (think of Katrina).
      If he was looking more as a Tornado shelter, a concrete box (or even a new septic tank) would do the same job, and be resilient enough to install hydraulic jack(s) to push off debris.
      Yes, I did think about this quite a bit, as I even drew up blueprints for my own. Concrete drainage pipes can be 2-10 feet in diameter, so a 4-6 foot pipe is not that hard to get, and can even be made at home, if you are crafty enough.
      People have used all kinds of things to make bunkers. School buses, shipping containers, and yes, septic tanks. The difference is they've also taken into consideration things like drainage, plumbing and anchorage. Jim just didn't bother to think it through.

    With the water tower story the first thing that came to mind wasn't the thing rising from the depths but was rather more dangerous and I expected a more sinister outcome. When you have an enclosed space made of steel there is a strong likelihood of some rust (think a ship's bilges or the like) and rust never sleeps. The chemical reaction that produces rust will use up all the oxygen - go into that space without first thoroughly ventilating it or wearing an air pack like firefighters use and the lack of oxygen can quickly render one unconscious and then dead. Any would be rescuers can suffer the same fate if not properly trained and equipped. Something much like that happened about 10 years ago near me when some guys were doing maintenance inside a steel barge - killed three all told. Ask anyone who's worked in oil and gas - they'll tell you how seriously they take the risks of entering enclosed spaces. Mr. Rich was lucky to have not killed himself with his harebrained scheme.

    I love stories about lottery winners losing all of their winnings in stupid ways. 😆

    • @bigdickpornsuperstar
      @bigdickpornsuperstar 3 года назад

      Well then, that would be most of them.
      It's called the "Lottery Curse" since well over half of all multi-million dollar winners end up in deep debt, mostly for taxes.
      And a statistically significant portion of the rest end up dead not terrible long after their windfall.
      So, if you were bad with money before you won the lottery, winning millions just means you can be spectacularly bad with money.
      If you win millions and millions of dollars do the following:
      1) Do Not Tell Anyone!
      2) Hire a lawyer.
      3) Do Not Tell Anyone!
      4) Hire a money manager.
      5) Do Not Tell Anyone!
      6) Pay your Taxes
      7) DO... NOT... TELL... ANYONE!
      Once your money is safe in appropriate long term investments (Trusts, Bonds, Stocks, property, etc.) that will increase your wealth over time, then you can splurge, buy a few toys, take a trip.... and maybe tell someone, now.

    I'm skeptical of the water tower rising out of the ground. Soil normally doesn't become liquescent enough to raise a tank out of the ground.

      Large underground tanks at a service station will float up if left empty after the initial installation. We always had a partial load of product dropped as soon as possible after the tanks were installed. I believe the newer fiberglass tanks which weigh less are worse about floating than the older steel tanks.

    • @TotallyNotRedneckYall

      @@larrykeenan598 Ha, I didn't know that.
      I wonder if the type of soil has an effect on whether stuff floats up. The soil where I live is mostly hard clay and calcium carbonate deposits, sheds more rain than it soaks up.

    • @larrykeenan598
      @larrykeenan598 3 года назад +1

      @@TotallyNotRedneckYall I think it has mostly to do with the fact that you dig out a huge hole, put in a tank that takes up lots of space, and then fill around the tank with some dirt. You can't really pack the dirt so it stays porous, allowing water to penetrate into the hole. We backfilled the tanks with sand and then dropped about half a tank full of product in it. Gasoline weighs about 6 pounds per gallon. Putting a few thousand gallons in a tank adds quite a bit of ballast.

    • @cindydott452
      @cindydott452 3 года назад +2

      Slightly related. The first deep diving bathyspheres used tanks of gasoline for buoyancy. They would drop lead weights, and rise to the surface. Gas is lighter than water, and cannot compress like a tank of air would.
