This is giving me a lot of ideas to entertain mine. This weekend, I’m getting them a toy xylophone so they can have chicken music for chicken concerts ...... or not.......well, maybe for me to listen. I love watching mine play and interact with each other and me. I have a large tree near their run with a lawn chair and little table for my ice tea.
One of the nicest runs I've ever seen. Love the safety aspects from predators and the natural things to keep them amused. lovely. Well done, thanks for sharing.
I love your chicken run. I think I eant to build one like it. I love all the fun ideas you incorporated in it to keep them active. Thank you for sharing!!!
I love your chicken run. All the perches and swings. I am building our coop and run and glad I found your video for information on the contractor sand to use on the floor.
I never thought of putting hardware cloth on my cleaning fork, it is actualy a muck rake for horses but I needed something for sifting the pine shavings, but your idea of a hardware cloth on it is a good idea, will be trying it. that run is really nice, if I was going to make my chickens live in the run with very little if any free range I would of made it three times bigger, that way they get lots of movement. still very nice.
What an awesome home for your chickens! I would LOVE to have something like that for my quail! BTW, meal worms are VERY easy to propagate and not messy. Also, and this is just my theory, but it seems the worms have more nutrients if they are still alive (fresh). My quail go nuts for both the worms and the little beetles that they turn into. All I do is put some turkey starter (good source of protein), powdered egg shell (for calcium), oat meal, and/or dog food in a bucket with a lid, put it in a warm place (75°-85°F is best) and let nature take its course. I will also throw in raw potato for moisture but that can cause mold. I've actually discovered by accident that they will thrive without any moisture at all and only wood to eat when I left some meal worms in a terrarium in my classroom over the summer and returned to find it swarming with worms and beetles. You could even raise them right in the coop in the warmer months, if you are in a northern climate. I'd love to hear if you try it! :)
You did a great a job, it looks very stimulating for the birds, how often, if you have, do you move it around? 6:35 I have been looking for a plastic trough, can you tell me where you don’t the one you have?
I have looked at a lot of runs. Yours by far is the best. Loved the logs. It is good for their feet to have different circumference roosting perch Really great job.
Great Video! Thank you for sharing your beautiful run. How long have you been using the sand material in your run? Do you ever have to change the sand all out?
Your chicken coop looks awesome in Vermont is beautiful I’m here stuck in California in a heavily Residential area looking to start a chicken coop for about 45 chickens I will be approximately 3 feet wide 8 feet long and about 8 feet tall with the run attached to it of 3’ x 15’ it will be 3 feet tall love your chicken coop in Vermont definitely beautiful
Hello. I would love an update on your run. I loved this video and got so many ideas. Thanks for sharing. Oh and the contractor sand, where do you normally buy it?
Thank you! I will make another video in a month of so of the coop and nesting boxes. Im am planning on making a few changes but need to wait for nicer weather.
I love all the creative ideas for perches and swings in your run, it must keep the birds really happy. What is the size of this run and how many chickens can you keep in this size run?
That is awesome, very lucky chickens. I am going to use some of your ideas in my chickens run. I am all new to this and loving my 10 week old girls and maybe a couple of boys in the mix. (18 altogether). I never knew what a joy it was keeping chickens, I absolutely love them.
A run should allow for a minimum of 10 square feet for each chicken. So a run that is 11x11 is only large enough for about 10 hens. I have 10 chickens and 8 ducks and our run is about 18x40. The more space the better for health reasons, to prevent illness and pecking issues.
Perhaps an electric portable fence would be a good option so they can get out and forage when you are home? Might be a great option to get the horse out more to graze and keep from being bored. I like your run because it looks easy to winterize by throwing up some greenhouse plastic around the outside. Great use of your space.
Jan Coldwater we have a fenced acre around perimeter. Steel mesh wire with electric on top, bottom, and middle on outside. :) when we are home they are out
Melissa Looman WOW! You made fast work of predator proofing! That is awesome! You are living the life and so are your animals!Congrats! You should charge for tours; you'd make a bundle! Ha! 👍
Jan Coldwater That’s exactly what we do in winter. Put heavyweight plastic on all side leaving very top open to breathe. Secure plastic with strapping.
Melissa Looman If you get the chance, would love to see some more video updates. You know things are getting bad when a person gets bored with RUclips and is begging for more interesting videos! Hahahahaha. No, but seriously, I think my problem is I am limited by the things I find interesting. LOL I love homesteading lifestyle. I live vicariously through other people's videos, being that I am currently stuck in the suburbs of NY. Hoping to move to East Tennessee soon. Then I will be in my glory. 🤗
I am so bad at making videos, sorry I have not done any updates. I will tell you that since this video we now have 4 geese and a pond that we made for them. I have had a lot of interest on that. I may do a video this spring when I open it back up again. And I will show more of the fence then as well. So far so good!!
I really have never had a problem with it. However they are not confined to the run only. They are out in a large pasture during daylight hours. They are only confined to coop/run during the evening or bad weather.
We have since added a 4 foot steel mesh fence with 3 strands of electric in a 1/2 acre pasture around the chicken yard. And we have added 4 Geese that I LOVE!!! the combination keeps everything away so far!!
I'm in VT too! This is my first year with chickens, and I am wondering about how that waterer stands up to our freezing temps. How do you manage their water in the Winter time?
New chicken mom here- I was going to use wood chips for the run but I love the look of sand and how well it would drain. Do you ever have to completely change out the sand or just add more? If so, how often?
I recently saw on RUclips where someone uses sand with sweet PDZ under the roosts. Every day or two they use a long handled cat litter scoop to remove the poop. This is what I plan to do when the young chicks leave the grow up coop. Amazon carries a terrific long handled metal scoop.
great coop! thanks for sharing! is that an electric fence outside the coop? i’ve been told to add that to my coop for bears and coyotes....i’m researching that now
Looks great. Question: I am finishing up my run (1st time chicky mom) and am wondering... where do you buy the construction sand? All I have seen is the quik crete brand or did you use some other brand?
I have a large pasture surrounding the run that they are allowed in during daylight hours. They put themselves to bed at dusk and then we just lock them in until morning.
MissChievousRN I have the same problem. I don’t know what to do, my chickens waste so much Food and water. I really need to know what kind of waterer and feeder bucket to have to avoid this annoying problem. I love my chickens but absolutely I need to know what what is the best design about wateter or where to buy it plus a good feeder.

I built feeders out of PVC pipe (www.pinterest.com/pin/461056080596754492/). It was very inexpensive and easy. I just fit the pieces together (no gluing) and it has really cut down on waste. I am going to make a waterer next that will help keep the water clean so less work! (www.pinterest.com/pin/574631233690517888/)

Would you share how it was constructed? Did you use 4x4 corner posts? Did you burry them? I live in NH and there are plenty of predators here too. I am confused as to go about building a run like this.
I did not bury posts. Leveled ground and layed PT 6x6 on cement blocks. Fabric cloth was attached under 6x6’s and extended 1 foot beyond outside of 6x6’s. I constructed 4 panels and secured them together and and to the 6x6’s. Used a 2x6 nailer on the building to secure roof rafters to the barn. I have send 2x4 for rafters and strapping lates across to secure metal roofing. Then attached fabric cloth. I have photos I will try to show you.
Is that one piece of hardware cloth in your front two big sections (to the left and right of the door)? I can only find it in 3 ft wide strips and those two section look a lot wider than 3 feet. Thanks!
