    Thank you so much for this well-done video and tour AND especially for letting us see the inside chick area, chicks, with ideas for this building and roosting area! How many chickens do you guys have now? Has all if it worked out as well as you planned? I am guessing yes as obviously you are a master craftsman! We are renovating a 100 yr. old chicken coop that has a lot of well preserved benefits and so it’s always interesting to see other’s chicken houses. Your screening all around is top-notch and what we are planning for. Stay well.

    I wondered if you plan to let the chickens into rhe gardens ever? Could you add compost in winter, then let them scratch? I saw a farm which rotated chickens in 3 or 4 fields. They would have their compidt piles in the fields. A cow was in one field, a goat in another. The flock knew to work the big compost piles. If a hawk came, they ran under a raised coop, or under a hedge row. A hawk got one hen out if a bush, but mostly the hens were okay. They worked on the compost all day. The compost was used to grow food for a restaurant.

    Great coop! Might want some electrical outlet covers or caps just to keep the dust out. Almost finished with my new coop..I’m getting my poop boards put up, deciding what bedding to use, I started buying the cubes of pine shavings and then heard about hemp, so I just got a big bale of that. I’ll try both. I’ve got my long run covered 100% in half inch hardware cloth, I’m figuring out if I want to use some sort of solid cover for winter, details, details..

    Maybe someone has already suggested this, but I would recommend placing child safe outlet covers to keep the dust down in your outlets. The push in kind would probably be best. I may snag your litter stops and your tree ring ideas. Good job on the predator proofing. Has it held up? I would love to know since I have everything from mink to coyote here. Thanks for the video.

    • @terryhatfieldmin
      @terryhatfieldmin  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks! That's a great idea on the outlets. Chickens are some kind of dusty for sure! No predator issues so far. Something, I don't know what, chewed on the winter curtains that we had up but past that no problems at all.

    Excellent video. I have some questions.
    1) How do you clean the poop tray that is under the perches and above where the nesting boxes will go?
    2) How much room is under the boxes? (I've been doing a lot of thinking about the possibility of having the ducks underneath the nesting boxes and perches without chicken poop falling on the ducks.
    3) Did you research whether having the fencing on top of the ground versus vertical dug down 12" is more predator proof?
    Great design. I'm working on how and what to build.

    • @terryhatfieldmin
      @terryhatfieldmin  5 лет назад +2

      The poop tray is covered with Sweet PDZ. It is horse stall freshener. We buy it at Tractor Supply. It dries out the poop so it doesn't smell. It functions basically like a big litter box. We just sift out the poops and screed the Zeolite to 1/2" thick just like a cat litter box. Works very, very well. We add a little PDZ when needed and change it out a couple of times a year. There is virtually zero smell. Wouldn't dream of doing a coop without using this system.
      There is about 18" or so below the nest boxes to the floor. So about a foot above the shavings.
      We researched the wire extensively. All that is necessary is to deter the diggers from digging. They go right to the edge of the run and attempt to dig. Once they see they can't get through he wire, they just give up. We had had zero issues with anything getting into the run. The wire is more effective on top and it is buried because it stops them quicker.
