The reason this is sad is because:
1) an average human walks 5cm/second and can walk 1383287495 cm in 13 years which is the distance from north to South Pole, this shows that Akari and Takaki have drifted to the ends (that they have no chance of coming back together)
2) their first kiss was their last
3) petals falling was an interpretation of human (how they might be together from the start but will never be there ‘till the end and will drift apart)
And more. Damn this movie is hella sad but understanding the meanings hurt even more😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
To be more accurate, 5cm/second is the rate at which cherry blossoms fall; that's what the title is based on ;)

This is me in reality, she was my childhood love/first love way back when we were still kids then she went to other country with her family. We sometime communicate right now because being busy in work and studying in college. I know it hurts so much but we have to let go sometimes if we love that person.

Sometimes,no matter how much you love someone or care about someone,people cannot stay together. We don't know why it happens and why we cannot stop it from happening no matter how hard we tried. I guess in the end we just have to think of it as destiny or fate and just move on with the immense pain in our heart and hope for something better. We cannot explain this kind of pain. A pain where you love someone and want that person in your life but the so called fucking destiny or fate doesn't let that happen😢😢😢😢.

I love, maybe masochistically, series that are rooted in a deep and complex pain and illustrate the actions the main characters take to get out of their own heads. In 5CPS, Takeshi takes almost no action and let's time do most of the work and that's tragic in itself. @@DopplerDo Tough to choose a favorite but while I think 5cm has the most refined storytelling shinkai has produced and looks amazing Garden of words just edges it for me art-wise and its general 'feel' I just love the repeated shots of tokyo during different seasons.
