    I’ve only air-layered junipers, satsuki and JBP... have always been looking fwd to layering my JMs.. but, they’re still too young/small. I can’t wait to do it tho!

    Nice. I like using water bottles so the roots are visible when they reach the edge.

    Do you have any Bonsai for sale or the trimming and cutting? It's hard to find good ones to start with from my local nursery as they all have high grafts.

      You can do air layering when buds are starting to move in early Spring OR when new leaves are hardened off in late Spring. 😁 Good luck!

      @@MomijiEn Thank you so much. I would like to do it early then when the buds are just starting to sprout since I would be able to clearly see the outline of the branches of my Japanese maple tree when the leaves are not fully established yet. Kind regards :)

      I typically do it in early May after the first spring growth. However I am also planning to do it in early Spring so if all goes well, I can separate the air layer in summer, not fall 🙂 please keep me posted on your progress!

    Another great video, thanks!. I tried to air layer my JM in March in Northern California using sphagnum moss and after 2 months the air layers broke off. Could it be a) I did it too early in the season ( I waited for new growth to happen), b) I put too much water in the moss or c) I used to much spaghnum moss resulting in the air layer being too heavy and thus causing it to break off? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

      It happened to me before. In my case, the cause was a mix of (c) above and the air layered branch was too thin after removing the bark. The good timing is either super early winter or mid spring (early May).

    Hi all. Thanks for the tips. I think l tried to make my air layer to early as no roots appeared. Would it be ok to recut the top cut or a fresh cut on the same layer and try again?

    What season is best to air layer?

      I typically air layer in May/June. (Northern Hemisphere) However, some people do in late March/April with great success (it allows them to separate the tree earlier in the year) so I'm planning to experiment a few in mid Spring next year 🙂

    My red maple after pruning & cutting the roots 30%, branches & twigs dry immediately. how to handle red maple after pruning & root cutting? does it have to be covered?

      Di solito faccio uno strato di aceri giapponesi a maggio. Alcune persone iniziano all'inizio di aprile. Dipende da dove vivi.

      Sospetto che la parte a strati d'aria non abbia trattenuto l'umidità necessaria o potresti aver rimosso la corteccia troppo in profondità.

    Can you do this with a normal size Japanese maple and turn it into a bonsai?

      As long as the trunk or branch is thicker than a pencil or your finger, you can air layer it.

      For me, mid Spring when new leaves are just hardened off is a good time to air layer JMs. Had great success :) some people do earlier.

    Side note, do you prefer Deshojo's or Shin Deshojo's more? Just bought a shin deshojo and was wondering if it's also worth getting the original deshojo too.

      Yeah, been trying to find the differences between them but I haven't had much success. I have only really seen people say that the shin deshojo is supposed to hold onto its spring color for longer supposedly.

    Could you use peat moss as the soil to mix with akadama as well, or do you recommend sphagnum?

      I would only mix peat moss with akadama only for young seedling to retain moisture longer. I would use peat moss for older maples.

    Is it possible to grow Japanese Maple at a temperature of 20 - 30 degree Celsius.....

      That's possible as long as there are several months out of a year when the average temperature is cold enough for JMs to go dormancy.

      @@MomijiEn In my place, the minimum temperature is 17 degree Celsius, maximum temperature =31 degree Celsius.........is it possible to grow in this range.......

      @@MomijiEn What is the hormone powder you use? Seems something made in JP. Is the active ingredient IBA or NAA? 1%? Thanks

    Maybe it would be easier and safer to use a pipe cutter , (Like plumbers use), to cut the 2 lines around the circumference of the branch ?
