Yeah because it was bad, it has awful writing, it's filled to the brim with tropes and shoves everything down your throat. There's no subtlety and no cleverness. It's written for idiot by idiots who think they're smarter than they are.
The writing quality in games has improved so much that Cage games honestly feel behind in the narrative focused genre _ and that since after the release of heavy rain, even though that had some hilariously bad stuff as well. It did have some so bad it's good feel that was occasionally a lot of fun.

A 2018 GOTY list should be from games released in 2018... it's not that difficult 👀
why (WHY!?) does Jared have to start every sentence with “let me take you back to 1992 Tim” or “Let’s journey back to 1987 Greg” and then babble on about some game no-one has ever heard of.......stop creating a 900-word story for everything you say!
The fact that he finds it necessary to do that again and again did start to get to me while listening to this. Given that it's a GOTY discussion, I think it's fine if he wants to compare 2018 to other years and contextualize his picks a bit but not for EVERY game.
I like Jared’s informative historical anecdotes. Is it pertinent to this discussion? No but it’s what KF is all about wandering down rabbit holes!

Chris Winslow OG God of War/Major League = completely over the top, hyped exaggerated, super indulgent, a little misogynistic, don’t think too hard about it, just game some old hack n slash/baseball fun.
New God of War/Field of Dreams = a hyper sincere, thoughtful, almost saccharine, telling of a hack n slash/baseball story from a completely different philosophical perspective that is nothing like previous instalments save for the most basic premise of hack n slash/baseball.

I dislike when gaming personalities say "I get it". Do you really? Games are a medium made for you to interact with. Yet people see trailers or play it for a hour then say I get what they are going for. I feel it's ok to say this isn't for me but saying you get it without truly experiencing it is not fair. I've seen podcasts with people playing a hour of Divinity 2 then critique it. That's just crazy to me. Everyone's opinion is different but it's just how I feel about it.
I agree with you. Some games you really can't understand tell you finish it. I mean I would say I didn't understand what RDR2 was trying to do with it's story tell 40 hours in. Seriously I remember thinking I'm more than halfway done I just don't get it. Then literally an hour later I got it. Point being it can take certain games the entire length of it to understand what it's trying to do and to say you got something without that effort is lame.

C'mon, Jared, We both know that there isn't enough combat in Planetscape: Torment for Greg to like it. And it's old. A lot of that team made Torment: Tides of Numeria, which is a newer game, but again, combat is sparse, or optional, which is nothing like Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.

Jesus christ Jared is hyperbolic. It's cringe worthy sometimes. I really like Jared, I really do, but man sometimes just say you like the game. Also Tim had a bit to much to drink and gets a little to into the beat saber descriptions.
Wouldn't that be boring. The man is passionate about it. The only thing I can say is just skip those parts.

Not every game needs an elaborate "this game is once in a life time game, that is so full of energy, love, care, tenderness, heart, sadness, emotions and is the BEST BEST BEST BEST animations I've ever seen in a game ever and it really is a spectacular, wonderful and amazing game that everyone should play." Now times that by every game he talks about and it get's cringe worthy.

Him doing that made me not care about his opinion all that much. I can't really tell if a game is actually good, if he praises every second game like that.
I may get shit for this but Red Dead 2 is my favorite game of all time and the story imo was vastly superior to God of War. Don't get me wrong I love God of War but it just didn't affect me the same way Red Dead did.

God of War's story has a lot of problems, mostly that nothing really happens for 10 hours, and it relies too much on mystery boxes, so much so leaving out its villain for most of the campaign.

I highly recommend going to wall alphacoders website, then type in the name of the game and tons of other wallpapers for games will come up so you don't have to use the same thumbnail when your talking about a game. Plus this thumbnail could've been a compilation of the other great games that came out this year not just gow [just a small nitpick lol].

Octopath Traveler and Monster Hunter World were my favorites. 2018 was a year the KFG group might look back as the best, in their perspective. Anyone's free to disagree, but 2018 appears to me to push boundaries in narrative storytelling like in God of War, Spider Man, or RDR2 but not as strong in the same manner as 2017 where Nier Automata, Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Persona 5, Nioh, Cuphead, Horizon Zero Dawn, Resident Evil 7, or Yakuza 0 were utter masterful experiences in terms of gameplay, and some narrative. That's why I prefer 2017 over 2018.

I think its open world design kinda ruins the game for me.
I have to give it a second shot at some point, because I love all its other elements, but I just think its open world design and "quest system" is pretty trash.
If it wouldve came out at a different time I feel Tim would have played it, but it came out a week after Zelda last year amoung other Switch release so it got lost in the shuffle.

4. Spiderman
5. Celeste
6. Detroit Become Human
7. Hollow Knight
8. Octopath Traveler & Dragon Quest 11 (I like them both equally for almost the same reasons)
9. Torna: The Golden Country
10. Dragon Ball Fighterz
Honarable mentions: A Way Out, Dead Cells, Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee, Batman Telltale: The Enemy Within.
Excluding remasters and remakes like Shadow of the C., Bayonetta 2 and DKCTF (which would all be on the list).
Personally, I think 2017 had fewer amazing games in terms of sheer quantity, but some of them outperformed 2018 games. It had two of my new favorite games of all time: Persona 5 and Breath Of The Wild. The Switch came out last year too and had one of the best launch years ever for Nintendo.
2018 brought God Of War, which is now my second favorite PS4 exclusive with Spiderman right behind it and Smash Bros Ultimate which is probably the best fighting game ever.
So at the end of the day, I can't disagree with 2018 being better than 2017, because of the sheer quantity of good shit.

@@huliniswhoiam a lot of people have put smash above spiderman from game people i follow. maybe not at KF aside from tim i'm guessing. people i follow from ign, gamespot, etc etc had smash and even tetris above of spiderman. also most people don't consider smash a real fighting game. i love that series and i agree with that
I can't decide between my top 3 so i'm giving a 3 way tie to God of War, Spider-man and RDR2, loved all 3 from beginning to end, all 3 were near perfect to me.

I wonder what Jared, a guy who started his own Red Dead podcast even before RDR2 came out will choose as his Game of the Year.
He did it with Fallout 4 as well, I believe. He's just trying to establish an audience early so when everyone does play Red Dead and wants to hear about it so he can cash in.
God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Spider-Man all coming out the same year is pretty insane in retrospect.

But he is comparing a game that has been out for a month with games that have been out for 1+ years.
Both Fortnite and Rainbow didn't get traction until way farther down the line than a month.
We don't actually know what else Sakurai and his team will be adding besides the fighters pass but Tim is talking like he knows for a fact that is all.
Also he did that thing again where he says nobody wants something when usually the majority do when he said he would stop saying that.

World of light is fun and polished. The mechanics matter. Especially on hard mode. It is meant to played in increments, not long sessions. Sure you can autopick what the game recommends, but it's not always the BEST option. It allows you to choose. Sure you can phone it in, but I appreciate the choice and personalized challenges. Looking back on the event mode from earlier entries-- I promise you they aren't as good as you remember.
I finally tried La Croix! Got some at my work in Nova Scotia Canada.
I gotta say...not what I was expecting. HOWEVER.
It grew on me after the first few cans to the point where I find myself craving it's almost alcoholic flavor.
Long story short...I get it. It's good.

I can't help but feel like Gregg and Tim just didn't get red dead. Not a bad thing, I seriously don't get AC Odyssey, I don't get why everyone likes it. I think this might be a good thing for video games going forward as an art form.
The story telling was too ambiguous for Greg, he prefers a heros tale. The game itself is not going to draw people in - it just isn't very good - but even then he leans towards snappy, checklist stuff; RDR2 isn't that. I imagine Tim was just put off by the gameplay problems.

Holy crap until Greg mentioned it I didn't realize this was basically 3 hours long. I know you guys are working so hard, but I miss the longer forms of content like this, I just booted some games, played this in the background & it was so nice!

Constructive criticism: You guys are, and your KFG content is, I would say, on the whole quite 'family friendly', except the occasional times Greg & Tim drop these totally pointless F-bombs which alway sound jarring to me, like two guilty schoolboys who no longer have IGN telling them rules, eg it's never worth it, or even funny, unlike say, Jim Sterling content which is naturally more comedic, more adult oriented (though not solely) but comes across well, as it's Jim's natural personality and his natural talent, using comedy timing etc. Let's be honest, KFG is mainly lightweight gaming-based popcorn chat, skewed towards persuading younger audiences (some who may be at the phase in life where they think swearing is really cool) to spend their parent's money on Patreon KF stretch goals to show loyalty to you guys. So, just a request to maybe consider keeping your podcasts non-explicit, it just doesn't naturally fit your content imo. Or at least bleep it out to keep your channel clean, more mainstream, (more fundable? $$$), which I'm sure is what you're aiming for in the long run, based on your recent Patreon push/begging extravaganza. Or just mark all your content as explicit and go full-on making your embarrassing potty mouth moments actually worth it or even funny.

To each their own... I totally get it if it's not on a Top 10 list, but RDR2 not even an Honorable Mention is just silly. I mean how can you put mobile games ahead of it?! Greg enjoyed ACO so much because of his buying XP... if you didn't buy XP it really is just another AC grindfest in a beautiful setting, but with more unoriginal repetitive dialog to sit through.
This will be my last listen for you guys. Your talk about Fortnite was so over the top and ridiculous it was laughable. Give me a break. Game of the decade? What an absolute joke. Ya'll lost your heart long ago, and hopefully you will find it again. But I'm hard out.

I appreciate that Wong Fu shoutout in the video, Tim! I met them in Harvard almost 7 years ago now, and they're really nice fellas. Also went to their ISA Concert the year after, and it was such a fun time seeing so many famous RUclipsrs and the like.. I know this doesn't have much to do at all with GOTY, but I had to comment on it. Wong Fu 4 Lyfe!! (Also now I gotta play Florence lol)
I still dont know why all these games "Journalists" are so surprised that God of War was so good. Apart from Ascension the series has always been highly acclaimed and received high scores everywhere. I was actually way more shocked that Ascension was not that good than I am over how good the new one is.

this is probably a controversial opinion but the camera in the shadow of the colossus remake is god awful and taints the whole experience. still a great game, but fighting the camera three quarters of the time is ridiculous.

I have slowly watched less and less content from this channel over time and skimming these lists confirm that these guys have truly changed and completely lost the plot for me. Except Jared, Jared I love you.

Man I have never felt so out of touch with all the talk of messenger. I couldn't get into it at all. And they called it a metroidvania? Does it become more open further in? Same with Celeste. Maybe it's the faster pace, because I completed hollow knight.

Yoo Jared with the Mulaka shout-out, niceee. Loved that game.
The webslinging in Spiderman PS4 feels and looks good but it's missing way too much depth from Spiderman 2 and Ultimate Spiderman. It's also far too hand-holdey and automated and plateaus early on because it's easy to pick up but also easy to master.
Just a correction, Terence Stamp is actually in The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert; John Leguizamo actually co starred in To Wong Foo along Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes.
I 100% agree with Greg on the fact that it's just another Spider-Man story, for me the story didn't feel like it mattered and most things just returned to normal at the end. It had one good twists at the end but other than that it was predictable. A lot of the suits were too similar, the side quests were repetitive and finally the web swinging didn't feel right, I think they should of made it more physics based(which I swear they said it would be, could be wrong though) rather than momentum based

Yall make me want to play God of war again. And I've done everything combat wise because I loved it so much. But going back and finding all the ravens, and the treasures and stuff. I just felt like I had no patience for it. But I'm pumped to get back because I remember how good the game was. I never deleted it because one day I might come back and get that extra stuff. Now I kinda want to do new game+. Thank u!!!
2011 and 2013 were better than 2018. The first half of 2019 is already set to be better than the first half of 2018 was. The second half has a solid shot of being better than the second half of 2018 too.
I'd even say 2016 and 2017 were better than 2018.
Planescape Torment and Assassins Creed couldn't be more different in pretty much every way possible. Sometimes I wonder what Jared is smoking ... lol

Jared is the MASTER when it comes to passive aggressive statements that are hard to detect if you're just casually listening. He said he had an anger issue before and I can 100% see it with the tiny hints he gives.
TIM!! On the topic of one takes PLEASE check out a German film named Victoria, from 2015. The entire. Two. Hours. and 20 minutes, is a single take. Start to finish, no edits, no cuts, on single continuous take. And the story and acting are also compelling and interesting to boot. Awesome movie and one of the most impressive things ive ever seen

Agreed, it was the most innovative and most fun game along with Beat Saber this year.
Just wanted to say, im 1 hour and 13 minutes in and Tim talked abour Journey. So i decided to pause the podcast and play Journey, didnt have a PS3 and had my PS4 for 2 or 3 months now. Loved this game, i see why people raved about it when it came out, so thank you for reminding me i had to play this game :)

Great episode. RDR2 is a fitting choice for a Southern gentleman like Jared. I liked Greg having PSVR games and Lumines Remastered in the top 10. Ragnarök's list was a bit confusing with all the late updates, but his #1 pick was solid.
