CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Leslie (Ally Sheedy) encourages Kevin (Andrew McCarthy) to fall in love again, but unbeknownst to her, Alec (Judd Nelson) just cheated on her with a salesgirl.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Post-collegiate angst, '80s style, is the subject of this coming-of-age ensemble piece, which traces the fortunes of a group of Georgetown grads as they enter the real world and grapple with work, infidelity, and adulthood. The most outwardly upscale member of the gang, Jules (Demi Moore), hides a plethora of emotional baggage behind a chic wardrobe, an expensive apartment, a fashionable drug habit, and lots of meaningless casual sex. Her friend Wendy (Mare Winningham) has the opposite problem; a trust-fund baby with body-image issues and little sexual experience, she's hung up on Billy (Rob Lowe), a no-good, sax-playing drunkard who can't face up to his responsibilities in the job market or at home with his wife and young child. Such open infidelity is anathema to Alex (Judd Nelson), who must maintain a sense of propriety even while engaging in compulsive womanizing; after all, the Democrat-turned-Republican's nascent political career requires the sort of picture-perfect relationship he shares with girlfriend Leslie (Ally Sheedy). That doesn't sit too well with tortured writer Kevin (Andrew McCarthy), who toils away at a newspaper job and pines away for the unattainable Leslie. Unrequited love also dogs Kirby (Emilio Estevez), a law-school student whose greatest wish is to romance classy doctor Dale Biberman (Andie MacDowell), who is, alas, way out of his league. Co-written by director Joel Schumacher and his studio intern, Carl Kurlander, St. Elmo's Fire spawned the number one pop hit "St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion)," which was credited to John Parr but co-written by music producer David Foster.

I love how Judd convincingly played a high school student and a full grown adult in the same year.
I wouldn't call Alec Newbury a 'full grown adult.' LOL! But I get the point you're making.
In one, he was 17 or 18. The other 23
McCarthy one-upped him: College grad in '85, high-school student (Pretty in Pink) in '86. WHAT ABOUT PROM, BLAINE?
Mare Winningham did the same
I don’t know about the adult role man.
"Leslie has to marry me soon."
"Why, are you pregnant?"
Kevins quick replies are brilliant and easily missed. Love his character.
it was all so fake, written to create social/ethical/verbal contexts that keep you all chasing goals that dont exist, eg the "ooooh i want to be an important writer but i doubt myself " script is so tiresome
@@rickdeckard1075 I think the characters and scenes were very relateable to a lot of people's situations. The film particularly reflects what young adults experience when trying to find their place in the real world after having left the safe bubble of College.
the replies are a little too quick, unnatural , like reciting lines from a script
@@aliali-ce3yf I think it depends on the person. I am a fast talker and I know I can be quick with comebacks and so is my sister and best friend.
I guess Bender eventually fixed himself up
unfortunately it didn't work out with Claire
and works for the stock market
@@comicguy9978 Claire eventually moved on and met Blane McDonough. ;)
@Saint Mikhaiella William You forgot that Claire fixed her up at the end. That is why she straighten herself out and Bender followed her.
Bender and Alec Newbury (the guy who enters at 0:50) do share the same actor-Judd Nelson.
People go on about Rob Lowe being hot . I think Andrew McCarthy is delicious.
Anne Boleyn me too something sexy about his uniqueness. His cynical attitude and his babyface
Me too he’s so cute his babyface and smile makes me melt .
They’re both delicious
Anne Tahunanui mental health issues I always felt about Mcarthy
he has the most beautiful eyes
I guess 8 Saturday’s of detention made a successful republican out of Bender.

kevin stir the vegetables! LOL
Andrew McCarthy is so dreamy
I totally agree. Im 41 so I was like 8 and in love with him.
Oh, absolutely he is. Love your RUclips name. Andrew McCarthy is my "eye candy" in some movies of the 80s.
Oh yes he is he’s a hottie!
Judd Nelson is so handsome in this movie
I’ve always thought Judd was hot as hell. He just kinda faded from movies...
Andrew McCarthy has become a Director working on Orange Is The New Black. I'm so happy for him. He faded out of the limelight for awhile and he had a heavy problem with Alcohol.
Is he really 😱my favourite movies the breakfast club and fave series is oitnb 😂😍😍😍
@@abbie3999 he wasnt in the breakfast club though...
Luna ْ 😂
i find myself going back to the 80's for some reason...one of my fav's
It seemed like a Simpler Time. No Cell Phones, Internet, Facebook, Texting, Apple & Microsoft were in their infancy. Many of Todays' Rock stars were either in Nursery School or not even born. People seemed to be more "In Touch" with each other.
Good writing, less background music and sound effects...
laminage I HATE OUR DECADE I HAAAAATE IT it ws simpler time now it's definitely over too much hindrances :'(
I find that we depend on "Technology" too much. One day My Mother went into The City to get her Hair Done and she saw people with their Phones and IPODS. She was confused and she asked me what everyone was doing. I told it wasn't what they were doing, it was what they weren't doing. Business Calls, Transactions, Confirmation of Evening Plans, and God knows what else.
This movie is so timeless. John Hughes films & *St. Elmo's Fire* are the few films that bring a smile to my face.
This movie is great and all but now that I’m older I realize how toxic Alec was, “i’m only cheating because she won’t marry me once she marries me I’ll stop” 😅😅
wtf hahahahahaha that is so on point
@@rockyreyes3815 only weirdos think like that
aren't they all toxic? kevin is clearly hovering around Leslie hoping for the relationship to fail to make his move.
All the women were abused in this movie.
Did he just put cigarette ash in the wok?
That Imbecile!!! Now That Wok Will Taste Like *ss!!!
I had to rewind it but no it was a vegetable that fell out
This is where I knew Kevin was in love with Leslie
I thought he was in love with alec and being jealous of leslie smh.....
I thought Alec was in love with Kevin and tried to make him jealous in this way...
infatuated , not love
I enjoy this movie, but the more I watch it, the more unlikeable the characters are. Think about it.
Alec - Self explanatory. Cheats on Leslie. Blames his cheating on her because she refuses to marry him. Then when she finds out, he kicks her out and blames her for messing up their relationship.
Kevin - Knows Alec cheats and sits back and says nothing. I know it's not his place, but Leslie is his friend too and the woman he loves.
Jules - stuck up druggie party girl with daddy issues
Kirby - The most unlikeable character in the movie imo. The way he handles his feelings towards Dale are quite scary tbh. He's unhinged. Any woman reading this, if you had a guy banging on your door like a psychopath in the middle of the night, would you not file a restraining order against that whack job?
Billy - Parties every night, does drugs. All the while has a wife and child at home. To his credit, he does try to make an effort to clean up and be a good father. But even then while he's trying to fix his marriage he's semi seeing Wendy on the side.. All the characters come off looking like assholes the way they excuse his behaviour. They should be telling him to go home to his wife and child.
Wendy - Although a sweet girl, I have to question her for getting involved with Billy whose married and has a child. I get that she loves him, but she's not helping his situation by not taking a step back and letting Billy sort his life out.
Leslie - I saved Leslie till last because she' not exactly unlikeable. She's not selfish like some other characters. But I do have to question her intelligence. She didn't ask Kevin why he didn't say anything after Alec alluded to him knowing about his cheating. Instead she sleeps with him. And the movie ends with her telling both Kevin and Alec that she loves them both. Huh? Alec shamelessly cheated on her, blamed her for it, and she still loved him at the end? She's a sweet girl though
Congratulations! You just found out the point of the movie.
I personally found Leslie and Kevin to be the most likable characters in the movie.. might be a little bias because I adore Ally Sheedy (I don't think it's possible to make her unlikable) and Andrew McCarthy... I think I would have preferred if the movie was centered around their characters and ditched everyone else.
That’s the point of the movie? They’re young adults who make epically terrible mistakes in the search of finding themselves.
@@jamiebrand269 yea but that doesnt make for a good movie when you have unlikable characters who you know are just gonna end up still being friends in with no consequences
Daizjon Powell There were consequences though. Alec lost the chance to marry Leslie and even if they do marry eventually, the relationship between them will never be the same again. Kevin and Alec forgave each other, but Alec will probably never trust Kevin again. Billy lost his family. Jules never really hurt anyone but herself, so she didn’t need to face any consequences. Same goes for Wendy. As for Kirby, well the dude is just straight up weird. He’s going to have a lot of bad luck in love if he thinks the way to get to a girl’s heart is by essentially stalking them. At the end of the day, nothing guarantees that they’ll still be friends in ten years, especially with Billy moving away. Adulthood is punishment enough for all the mistakes they’ve made. Life has a way of draining you as more time goes by.
andrew and judd are both so dreamy like wow.
Wtf did the 80s only have few actors I’ve literally seen them together in every movie
Hi! This comment was a year ago but...
Actually there were a lot of actors then, just that the Brat Pack (basically this clique of actors and actresses all in their teens and very early twenties that made up the most of the 80's coming of age films) were the people's favorites. Core brat pack members consist of the people in st. Elmo's fire and the breakfast club. Other honorary members include robert downey junior and james spader.
"Love sucks."
Totally!
I agree. Love sucks. It’s bullshit.
Both Andrew McCarthy and Judd Nelson are so hot during their 80’s...
Judd captured my heart as John in Breakfast club. He was so cute
Mine too. I can't help noticing that he looks so small in his other movies, though (I think he's only 5'10?). I think in TBC the layers of clothing bulked him up a bit but you could still tell he wasn't very tall. (I think of how much cooler and intimidating he'd come across if he'd been taller.)
The cast is so beautiful in this movie that it hurts!!!
Am I the only one who wanted Kevin and Leslie to end up together? I always thought he was the better man for her.
Kevin is one of my favorite characters in any movie ever!!!
OldEarthChaos me too! If I was Leslie I would’ve easily chosen Kevin over Alec. He’s such a sweetheart with an edge lol
yes, he STILL makes me believe in sensitive, artistic, deeply-in-love and faithful men...even though he's fictional lol
he's kinda creepy. hanging around someone else's girlfriend, clearly waiting to make his move. it's insincere. not to mention his cynicism is phony. when he gets together with Leslie, he gets super clingy really fast. also his tortured writer/smoking bit is like he saw it in a movie and wants to emulate it.
Judd Nelson's hair. Love it!
I though it was Andrew and Allison not Bender and Allison
hmm maybe this is after breakfast club when bender tries to marry allison lol
I love Judd Nelson. He was so beautiful! :3
Judd Nelson😍
T Givie youu 😍
I had a student once who reminded me a loooot of Andrew McCarthy. Their smile was even alike!!!! Same blue eyes and similar face expressions
i grew up in a blue collar world but always loved this movie.
Same cast as breakfast club I love them so much xxx
Minus Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald.
my two ultimate 80s actor crush
Poor Kevin, aww
I love cigarette bud with vegetables.
wth BENDER AND ALLISON TOGETHER
The Twilight Zone of the Breakfast Club
BENDER LOOKS SO DIFFRENT
Man you missed the end bit, where he flicks cigarette Ash into the Wok
They were out of salt & pepper. 😁
I’m in love with Andrew Mccarthy 😭😭
This is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. “Rough day on the right wing, dear?” Was something I quote to this day.
McCarthy just needs to stop going to their house for dinner.
was he just bragging to Kevin about cheating on Leslie :O
0:56 “Rough day on the right-wing dear?”
Andrew was always the hottest (to me) and also Steven Bauer (Thief of Hearts).
Breana Tangelino Andrew McCarthy is gorgeous
It was always rumoured one of the 'Brat Pack' said of him, the outsider : 'He plays every one of his roles with the same intensity. I don't think he's gonna make it.'
After the kiss from Claire John really turned his life around
For those of you looking, it's not on Netflix. Well, at least, not on the streaming part. You can order the DVD from them, though, and it'll come through the mail. But few people even seem to remember that DVD rental through the mail was what Netflix started out as.
The DVD is dirt cheap now but the Blu-ray is still quite pricey.
That flat is the most 80's thing ever.
AND the hair. Sweet Jesus. We had glorious hair in the 80's. No need to tame it--we just let it flow.
Bender ended up with the basketcase all along what happen to claire 😭
OMG Allison and Bender are a couple here??!!! I most watch it!!!
How could her on the breakfast club she put pixie sticks and captain crunch in her Nasty sandwich
Kevin is the original Debby Downer.
I’m sure I saw this movie about 8 times back then before I realized Kevin says “Rough day on the Right-Wing dear?”
They cut off the best part, when Kevin flips his ciggie in the wok after listeming to Leslie and Alec in the bedroom.
Looking back, these folks were as "Miserable" as their Big Chill Counterparts. Kevin is always hanging around The Loft not respecting Leslie & Alec's privacy. Jules lives life in The Fast Lane, got a Two Month Advance on her Salary and can't pay her Bills and she doesn't know why. Hard to believe that there was a time where people got their Paychecks in an Envelope. Alec talks about Marriage but he can't be faithful for Leslie. Leslie calls herself an Interior Decorator but she has no customers. Kirbo is obsessed with Dale Biberman and bit the hand that fed him with Mr. Kim, Billy still acts like an overgrown Frat Boy, and Wendy chooses to work as a Social Worker which is great and she wants to have her own independence and steam, but she dresses so frumpy. The Client was so right on she needs a makeover that way people would take her more seriously. My Aunt was a Social Worker but she always dressed professionally and her Clients and Co-Workers admired her and loved her.
Nice analysis.
@@WARRENBUFETT Thanks alot. I had no idea until much later that Washington, DC was the Birthplace of The Starbucks Coffee Empire and I had no idea it was Co Founded by Kenny G. It is also home to Howard University an HCBU (Historically College Black University).

Dude I've gotten paychecks in envelopes as recent as last year lmao, places still do it. Its just that most people use direct deposit now so it goes straight into their bank account. But paper checks in envelopes are still a thing, trust me.
Judd must love giving the ladies a red dress as a gift. He did that in Girl In The Basement
I sang We’ve Only Just Begun and pretended to be the girl Andrew Mccarthy was describing 🤤
Looking back Judd Nelson would have been another perfect actor to play Ford in the Paper Chase but of course he was too young. Very preppy, always wore a shirt and tie.
Waiting for Brian Eno to show up
judd nelson is such a babe
Kevin is the poor man's Woody Allen.
Wow Kevin was out here being our Demisexual king and we ain't even know it! We love representation!
I had no idea they were in another movie together!
Yep! Emilio, Ally and Judd. Ally & Judd also did a THIRD movie together, just the two of them called Blue City.
@@AllenMQuinn so I hope they have a good relation, for make all that movies together
At recommendation of John Hughes.
Glad Allison keeped her head up high
80s is the most sexiest decade i ever seen.... 😍❤️
It was awesome.
Vivaldi spring season playing in the background!
One of my favorite scenes
the only character I disliked was Judd Nelson’s even though the rest of them weren’t definitely saints
Kevin reminds me of Hannah from "Girls". So bloody negative, it's depressing. Also Alec was very stupid to tell Kevin his "Business" out. Joey Jeremiah told Snake & Wheels on Degrassi how he slept with Tessa Campinelli and when Joey and Snake had "Words" Joey called him on it.
laminage you watch girls....yuk
Yes, it kind of cheers me up in a strange way because if my life is "Bad" I look at these folks and realize it's not so bad after all.
Back when Love used to be a theme on movies, and love between a man and a woman was aloud and it was the main topic of many movies...
Who would think things would changed drastically a few years later?
All by design of "our overlords". 😎
but its not "love", its infatuation they're all talking about
Most public libraries have the cd If your local library dosen't have it go to the next town.
I identify so much at Kevin
Read the book, "Illusions" Richard Bach. He also wrote " Jonathan Livingston Seagull "
Mr. Vernon was wrong about Bender, haha.
Fun fact: Ally Sheedy recommended Judd Nelson to the production for the role of Alec Newbary.
What was the Classical Piece playing. I love their loft.
Spring by Vivaldi
Thanks so much. I love Classical Music, it is so soothing and relaxing.
As if ANY college graduates could afford to live in apartments THIS big! It's a huge issue in the film, but Joel Schumacher wanted glamour in the movie and didn't care about realism, at least not for their living conditions.
@@freddybeer didn't most of the characters come from well off families. that could explain their apartments and all the free time they seem to have
If circumstances were different Judd Nelson would have been perfect to have played "Ford" The Pre-Yuppie Law Student at Harvard who leads a Study Group. Like Alec Ford always dressed as a Pre-Yuppie.
Amazing how you look at a film and redefine your opinions? That's life. I thought this film was entertaining at best, but these 6, hard to believe that they are good friends, college may do that, the real world is the test.
Demi Moore and Judd Nelson are so stuck up and hung up on money. I can't even think of any bank giving 2 months advance on employees pay.
Emilio is just plain scary, stalking Andie, my sister joked she probably had a friend call to get her out of this lunch with stalker, not to tick him off, but to get away safe.
Kevin, in love with Allison, keeps secrets for Alec, his affairs. Alec, his holier than ever attitude, gets mad at his secrets revealed??
Perhaps Wendy would have grown up, after her love feelings with Billy was consummated. He left, she can move on, I think she would have had, and maybe Allison would have the better chances at true happiness.
I watch now, I think I like Andie and her boyfriend at the mountain snowy cabin was romantic and how kind she was to the nut. Her boyfriend too. Maturity (Andie and her Boyfriend)vs Immaturity(Kirby).
I hated this.
Judd Nelson's character seems to be confusing the word "obsolete" with "extinct." Also, at no point in history was a human ever in danger of being eaten by a dinosaur. Both characters are insufferable dumb-asses. Reasons 792 and 793 why I hate this movie. :)
Love and marriage being out of date. It’s exists but no longer believed in.
Also, the dinosaur comment was for humor (i.e., Kevin's cynicism). Most learned people know that dinosaurs and humans did not coexist. He was trying to emphasize that marriage is an ancient tradition.
The movie it's mostly about this guy more than I realized back in the day

Some folks born in the 1990's are discovering Karen Carpenter and they were blown away. Their Favorite Song was "Superstar" later covered by Luther Vandross (RIP). Him, Aretha Franklin (RIP), and The Isley Brothers were "wizards" at doing Cover Versions of Songs.
one of Karen Carpenter's biggest hits was a cover - Please Mr. Postman
@@aliali-ce3yf Yes. A couple of years ago, The UK did a Tribute To The Carpenters but they forgot that Please Mr. Postman, was originally done by The Marvelettes 60 Years ago. Their downfall was just as bad as Florence Ballard's of The Supremes. In fact she worked as A Subsitute Supreme when Georgia Dobbins had to drop out to take care of her Mama. Also 60 Years ago they were at their peak and then The British Invasion changed everything.
