Will the initial bend and the bend back the other direction grow with the tree, meaning will it increase in height? I’ve seen pines in Japan that have the classic “S” shape that are 70’ tall. Do they let the first “bend” grow for 15 years before training to go back the other direction? Same question for acer palmatums.
Hi Jake where every the bend is placed is where it stays just get wider with Niwaki ( garden tree )the 6 foot up to 10 foot is for the commercial sellers the large S shaped tree 70 feet tall are trained over many years both acer pine all done same way its a good question some people don't realise a tree growth is from the top some thing is grows from the base or trunk. A new shoot is chosen or indeed two are chosen incase of failure then one is removed once good growth is provided after being set in a shape.
When should you start training the trunk? (Or, at what age/height of the small tree/seedling?). Should I do this to a 5 year old, 16-24” high, seedling? Or, wait until it grows a little bigger? Thanks.
Less Talk, More Delicious Hello thanks for watching as for when Spring or autumn a good time when sap moving through out the tree...Age well younger The better for bending manipulation but you don't want to wait a life time either so this one is 8 - 10/years but other varieties like Pine bend with greater ease...Is yours in a pot or rooted into the ground you much listen for cracking slowly dose it..if you not at your desired bend a little walk away and after a couple of days come back and bend some more....In another video I don't I show another technique to get a severe bend it's at the very end of the video the video is called Hornbeam restyled any more let me know
The Motivated Gardener ...one more question please: I’m about to buy 2 Japanese black pine seedlings (both are about 4-5 years old, 1/2” trunk, about 2 feet tall). What size pot should I put them in when they arrive, to start training them? 5 or 10 or 15 gallon? (they will be for my outdoor garden/yard, Niwaki).
Less Talk, More Delicious Hello firstly if you can buy a Air pot and you get maxim root development 5 gallons for a younger tree your main aim is height to make your curves the branch development later..
7 years now… update?? Thanks for the demonstration!

@@themotivatedgardenergarden7822 Thanks for the response, I guess you really have to think ahead on how big your tree will get before making bends.
